German research group Fraunhofer has announced a new system designed to improve pedestrian safety. Scientists propose to install radars at intersections that could alert approaching cars about the danger of collisions with overly active pedestrians.

  • The concept is based on a whole complex of sensors, which are proposed to teach how to scan the area around their location up to 100 times per second. At the same time, it is planned to endow the electronic "brain" of the system with the ability not only to recognize pedestrians, but also to determine the speed of their movement and predict further trajectories.
  • This data will be transmitted to the on-board computers of the nearest vehicles through a communication system with infrastructure facilities. Thus, the drive electronics will receive information about moving objects that are outside the field of view of the sensors of the machine itself.

  • It is assumed that if the system recognizes the risk of intersection of the trajectories of a pedestrian and a car, it will even be able not only to give a warning signal, but also to preemptively apply the braking system. In the event that such a risk is not detected, the sensors will still warn the driver about approaching a crowd of people.
  • The developers have already moved on to full-scale tests. A trial version of the system is installed at one of the intersections on the Ingolstadt university campus and is capable of simultaneously monitoring eight pedestrians. A broad presentation of the project is scheduled for the second quarter of this year, however, after it, scientists are going to improve the system. The main goal is to teach her to determine the scenarios for the development of the situation as a whole, taking into account the cause-and-effect relationship. For example, if a ball rolls onto the road, then a child can run after it, and if a bus arrives at the bus stop, a late person can rush to it.

  • Yandex. Navigator has also learned to warn the driver about approaching dangerous areas. Now the service contains information about 1380 places where accidents or collisions can occur: they were calculated by analyzing data on 140 thousand accidents.
