Yandex, which is actively working in the field of creating drones, intends to expand the scope of its Yandex.Rover robots. They will be tested abroad as well. Dmitry Polishchuk, the head of the unmanned direction of the company, spoke about this in an interview with the VentureBeat portal.

  • Robots will work on delivery in the United States, Israel and South Korea. Yandex has been testing its unmanned vehicles in the first two countries for several years now. In Korea, the Russian digital giant is partnering with Hyundai Mobis. It is reported that the first robots have already been shipped to the United States and are now preparing to enter work.
  • Despite the different spheres (robotic cars drive on public roads, delivery robots - on sidewalks), both directions help each other to develop. So, on cars, situations are worked out that are regulated by the rules of the road. These algorithms will be used by robots, in particular, when crossing the carriageway. And Yandex Rovers often act in unpredictable situations: the movement of pedestrians on the sidewalks is chaotic and is not regulated by anything. Self-driving cars also need such knowledge. Therefore, Yandex is developing in parallel.

  • A Yandex representative noted that robots, even in the distant future, will not take over absolutely all deliveries. It is more convenient to use them on the so-called hyperlocal routes: within a radius of several blocks from shops and restaurants. And at a distance of several kilometers, it is better to involve people. They cover long routes faster and more efficiently. However, in the future, they may be replaced by UAVs.
  • Yandex is currently testing 35 delivery robots in Russia. They are improved in comparison with the first version. In particular, the enlarged battery allows them to work up to 10 hours even in winter, the box for goods is equipped with an automatically closing lid. With the advent of Yandex.Rovers in other countries, their fleet will grow by tens of units.
  • In December, the delivery robot Yandex.Rover was integrated into the Yandex.Eda service. Employees of one of the Moscow business centers and residents of the city of Innopolis near Kazan can already order unmanned food delivery from restaurants. The robot will go to the restaurant, pick up the prepared order and deliver it to the specified entrance. Only the customer can pick up food by giving the command to open the cargo box from his own smartphone.
