Less than 48 hours after news broke about a possible renaming of Volkswagen, a spokesman said it was a joke - more precisely, a marketing ploy. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company decided to become the first among the manufacturers to celebrate April 1.

Volkswagen did not plan to mislead the public: in such an unusual way, the company hoped to simply draw attention to its ID.4 electric car. It should become the most affordable electric VW in the United States, and the "news" of the renaming concerned just North America.
• In the allegedly appeared on one of the official websites of the company and soon afterwards deleted, it was said about changing the brand name from Volkswagen to Voltswagen. This renaming was supposed to affect the company's battery models: the Volt would be a hint of their electrical nature.
