Stereotypes aside, the current "Grand" of the fourth generation, in fact, has nothing to do with the image of the dashing cars of the nineties. But it is still a well-knocked down car, which in Russia can be called the most recognizable in the lineup. Not a classic Jeep Wrangler, but a Grand Cherokee! Although the brand itself clearly lacks the status of a cult, as in the States, when choosing a large crossover or SUV, Jeep is not the first to remember in Russia.
Plus an unclear status in the brand hierarchy: is Jeep already premium or not yet? On the one hand, a well-equipped Grand Cherokee can be bought a little cheaper than the ToyotLand Cruiser Prado. On the other hand, the Grand Cherokee can be incredibly powerful and quite expensive, which clearly does not fit with the image of the mainstream brand. The truth, as usual, is somewhere in the middle, and we will examine under a microscope the not the most expensive version of the Grand Cherokee S-Limited with an initial three-liter gasoline "aspirated" with a capacity of 238 horsepower and a moderate package of options - its cost does not exceed 4.5 million rubles.

Salon "Grand" is not young and clearly loses in visual comparison with younger digital interiors. Age is felt in the contours of the panel, and in the selection of materials, and in the configuration of the fit. And because of the high line of glazing, the driver has nowhere to put his left elbow. At first, a lot of difficulties are caused by the only steering column switch inherited from Mercedes.
Finally, there are thick body struts behind which a whole KamAZ can hide. But ergonomics in general can be considered normal, and given the fact that we are talking about an SUV with a very high seating position, it is easy to come to terms with most of the nuances even in 2021. You can get into a tall Jeep from a car without long adaptation.
If the style of this interior seems outdated, then the same cannot be said about ergonomics. Although there are still some features - for example, a very high vertical landing and a small range of steering wheel adjustment for reach. But otherwise adaptation is not required
Americans declare a trunk with a volume of 782 liters, but the calculation is kind of tricky - in reality, there is no more space under the curtain than in Hyundai Solaris. But if this is not the largest compartment among classmates, then it is definitely one of the most comfortable: parts of the sofa fold elegantly in one movement, forming a completely flat loading area.
At the same time, the sofa is not very comfortable for passengers. Overall riders are cramped here, and the range of adjustment of the backrest angle is too small. With such external dimensions, the "grand" could be a little more hospitable. Finally, passengers risk getting their pants dirty each time they climb over a high threshold, not covered by the edges of the doors.
On the second row, you can't really walk around: having jumped high, passengers find themselves in a simple compartment with a hard sofa and vertical backs. People of average height will not experience problems, and men of strong build will have to select the angle of the backrest and stick their legs under the front seats
Technique and reliability
The fourth generation Grand Cherokee entered the market in 2010, but technically it is even older: the model is built on the 2005 Mercedes-Benz ML W164 chassis. A unique feature is the presence of three all-wheel drive options at once: Quadra-Trac II with an electronically controlled interaxle clutch and a reduction gear, Quadra-Drive II with an electronic locking of the rear axle differential and Quadra-Trac without locks and lowering for powerful asphalt versions. The hardware is assisted by the electronics of the Selec-Terrain system with a set of algorithms for different coatings.
V6 engines with a volume of 3 and 3.6 liters are very similar units of the Pentastar series with variable intake and exhaust phases, which have long been brought to mind and well studied by servicemen. They can travel up to 300 thousand kilometers, but require attention to lubrication and cooling systems, and bad oil will quickly condemn the camshafts. However, spare parts are available and inexpensive. V8 HEMI engines with a volume of 5.7 and 6.4 liters have a large margin of safety and are capable of rolling out 500 thousand kilometers each. True, the oil in them will have to be changed every 10 thousand km, otherwise problems will begin with the timing units and camshafts.
But the once popular three-liter diesel engines jointly developed by VM Motori and Fiat Powertrain have long been gone on our market. And it's good - these motors had a whole bunch of diseases, up to the cranking of liners and even bursting crankshafts.
The resource of the 8-speed "automatic" ZF, which has been installed since 2014, is estimated at 300 thousand kilometers, but with frequent outings on the road, the friction clutches can wear out by the first hundred. The old problems with twitching during downshifts were solved by flashing, but it was not possible to get rid of oil leaks through the seals to the end. All-wheel drive transmission units are capable of walking 200 thousand, but the transfer case of the Quadra-Trac II system requires regular monitoring and oil change, and the weak point of the Quadra-Drive II transmission is the expensive motor of the rear limited slip differential.
There were many complaints about the operation of the air suspension, which does not tolerate road mud well and has poorly protected electrics - the pump often jams, and the car does not keep the suspension level, especially in cold weather. Since 2016, Jeep has been installing more protected cylinders, but … there is still little trust in the system. The "iron" chassis is more reliable and only requires monitoring the state of the silent blocks.
A Grand Cherokee with a three-liter engine takes about ten seconds to accelerate to "hundreds", and this is absolutely enough for ordinary life. At first it seems that the engine is "small", but the point is in the settings of the gas pedal - you need to push it from the heart. In addition, the 8-speed "automatic" takes a long time to think when kicked down. But the promoted "six" becomes sharp and takes on a hard metallic note in the voice - in general, sometimes it is useful and even pleasant to use the sports mode.
With a 3.6 engine with 286 hp. almost the same thing happens, only a little faster. The character of the unit is similar, but the reactions are livelier. And at high speeds, it's a little more responsive. The "eight" will be even cooler, but the 347-horsepower engine is not as angry as the V6 3.6, as much as it is more inconvenient: high consumption even with a half-cylinder shutdown system and a heavy front end, because of which the "Grand" seems more heavy in reactions. Well, there is nothing to say about the extreme versions of the SRT (468 hp) and Trackhawk (710 hp) - these are things in themselves, which should not be approached with reasonable standards.
It is clear that the heavy Grand Cherokee is far from a sports car, but the initial versions behave confidently on the road. And let the steering wheel seem artificially heavy, but the effort on it changes adequately. If you go too far with the speed in bends, then a heavy (2.2 tons!) Car will float with its front end out of the bend. But on the high-speed line, he is consistent and calm, which is a rarity for real SUVs. And at the same time it is quite comfortable - if on chipped asphalt one can still make claims about insufficiently thorough filtering of irregularities, then on a primer they are removed for the high energy intensity of the suspension and almost complete indifference to bumps of any depth.
With a ground clearance of 218 millimeters, the Grand Cherokee feels confident not only on a dirt road, but also on a wild field, since the moves and articulation of the suspensions allow it to get very far. The most vulnerable element seems to be the artsy front bumper of the S-Limited, which has no exposed tow hooks. However, you can unfasten the petticoat to improve the geometry.
The optional Quadra-Lift air suspension is capable of increasing the ground clearance to 280 mm, but if you do not need to go on hardcore off-road conditions, then you can do without it - the standard features are enough almost everywhere.
The Jeep with the basic Quadra-Trac II transmission has no forced locks, but the interaxle clutch spares no traction for the front axle, and the Selec-Terrain traction control systems skillfully picks up the slipping wheels with brakes. Thanks to this, the "Grand" perfectly crawls along a curved relief, but if you need an omnipotence mode, it is better to use a lowering with a gear ratio of 2.72, simultaneously with the inclusion of which the interaxle clutch is blocked and the traction control system is turned off. With such an arsenal, the Jeep drives very confidently. And if you still need rear locking, then take a look at the Trailhawk version - with a rear self-block, air suspension, a 3.6 engine and an attractive cost. But even the base Jeep is not afraid of diagonal hanging and easily walks through deep snow and liquid mud, without requiring flirting with electronic modes.
If what he lacks is improved sound insulation. The wheel arches are especially strained, which clearly transmit even splashes of water in puddles to the interior. And three-layer side windows also do not save from noise at speed - the aerodynamics of the Grand Cherokee are quite "noisy".
A more massive front bumper is installed on the Grand Cherokee in the S-Limited version, but the ground clearance (218 mm) does not depend on its shape. And from any of the bumpers you can unfasten the petticoat. What is worse is that in this version there are no open towing loops in the bumper.
It is not difficult to understand the price list: there are nine fixed configurations and five engines, but the units almost unambiguously correspond to the senior configurations, and only in the running lower versions is minimal variability possible. So, the first four configurations have an initial gasoline V6 3.0 (238 hp) and a Quadra-Trac II transmission with a lowering, but without a rear differential lock.
So the basic version Laredo is worth 3 664 000 rubles and has a fabric interior, bi-xenon headlights, dual-zone "climate", electric front seats, 7-inch media system, keyless entry - and some choice of additional equipment. Leather interior, mirror and seat memory, electric boot, heated steering wheel and a more powerful audio system appear in the performance Limited (4,115,000 rubles), but S-Limited (a plus 130 thousand) features an 8.4-inch media display, a special hood and bumpers without tow hooks. Finally, in Overland (4,505,000 rubles) appear Napp leather and a tree on the steering wheel, ventilation of the front and heated rear seats, a panoramic roof, an alarm, and most importantly - a Quadra-Lift air suspension, which for other trim levels will cost an additional 100,000 rubles.
However, the complete set Overland you can already take with the 3.6 engine (286 hp) for 4,890,000 rubles… There is a performance with the same motor Trailhawk (4,620,000 rubles), with a slightly different finish (Alcantara instead of perforated leather) and a Quadra-Drive II transmission, which implies controlled inter-wheel differentials in the center and on the rear axle. And then the SUV suddenly returns to the already familiar configuration. S-Limited - but already with a V8 5.7 engine with 352 horsepower, a Quadra-Trac II transmission and a price 5,100,000 rubles.
This is where the list of "normal" modifications ends - further in the price list there are only absolutely extreme versions SRT and Trackhawk… The first - with a V8 6.4 engine with a capacity of 468 forces, the second - with a supercharged V8 6.2 and a return of as much as 710 forces. Both of them are equipped with a simple Quadra-Trac transmission without lowering, do not have rails, but otherwise they are better equipped than other versions: there are adaptive headlights, radar cruise control, expensive "music", a panoramic roof, adjustable shock absorbers. But the price … If 6 530 000 rubles for SRT you can still understand that Trackhawk is insane 10,550,000 rubles!
ToyotLand Cruiser Prado
Land Rover Defender
ToyotLand Cruiser Prado
Not a single comparison in the SUV class is complete without Prado, so only dry facts: the frame, axles, lowering and locks of the center and rear differential are real hardcore! Prices for a middle-aged model range from 2,852,000 to 5,043,000 rubles. Motors - two gasoline (163 and 249 horsepower), as well as a diesel with a return of 200 horsepower
Stereotypes about the Grand Cherokee are long overdue for a landfill - we have before us a serious SUV with a fairly modern iron and a decent chassis, which is quite suitable for urban use. It looks cool, well equipped and has enough fashionable electronics, although in terms of convenience it is inferior in some parameters to more modern models. If the latter circumstance and the venerable age by modern standards do not bother you too much, then the Grand Cherokee is not just possible - it should be taken, because here and now it is still cheaper than it looks.
This also applies to simple (which in fact are not so simple) versions with a three-liter engine, and Trailhawk, charged for serious off-road conditions. And 10 million for a purely asphalt Trackhawk does not seem crazy - after all, this is a relatively affordable opportunity to wipe your nose for Bavarian "em" cars and older versions of Porsche Cayenne. Or just have the most powerful production SUV on the market. Which is also worth a lot.
