Let's take the front-wheel drive version of the Korean crossover with a 1.6 engine (123 hp) and automatic transmission as a starting point. According to Avto.ru statistics, this is the most popular modification in Russia, which costs from 1,177,000 to 1,439,000 rubles … The optimal configuration is the version Travel for 1,367,000 rubles … It includes headlights with static cornering lights, a Supervision dashboard, climate control, heated windshields, injectors and a leather multifunction steering wheel, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.
But even in spite of the rich equipment, the Cret is a compact budget B-class car. The crossover does not have a very spacious interior, modestly trimmed with hard plastic, and there are no special amenities for second-row passengers - for example, a center armrest or a set of outlets. And the trunk is modest - only 402 liters.
But the most serious drawback of such a Creta is the engine. 123 "horses" paired with a six-speed "automatic transmission" are not able to provide the crossover with decent dynamics - it accelerates to 100 km / h in more than 12 seconds! The real fuel consumption cannot be called small either. According to the passport, it is a pleasant 7.1 l / 100 km in the combined cycle, but in fact it turns out to be at least one and a half times higher.
The engine will rehabilitate its reliability, and this is really important for a budget car. The motor and automatic transmission, which are also installed on hundreds of thousands of Solaris and Rio, easily overcome 250-300 thousand km before serious repairs. The main thing is to pour normal fuel, and it is permissible to use AI-92. Yes, too thin body paintwork tends to quickly collect chips and scratches, but otherwise the crossover is inexpensive to maintain: the average price of a standard maintenance from an authorized dealer is 10 thousand rubles, consumables are cheap, and the maintenance schedule is once a year or every 15,000 km.
Kreta's suspension is strong, energy-intensive and capable of traveling up to 80 thousand kilometers without major repairs. With a clearance close to 20 centimeters and relatively short overhangs, the crossover is not afraid of bad roads, although off-road, of course, it is not a fighter. For such tasks, you need to choose an all-wheel drive version.
So what can you find on the secondary housing as an alternative to Crete? For the same money, we found several options for a used crossover, larger, not older than three years and with a mileage corresponding to the age within 100 thousand kilometers.
Among classmates, Kug is not the largest, but still more "Korean". The interior is more spacious and of better quality, the trunk is a good 50 liters more. Gain in ground clearance - 10 mm. However, in terms of equipment, the not most modern Kugi, most likely, will not have a special advantage. On the contrary, Creta, albeit for a surcharge of 50 thousand, can even have a heated rear seat and a multimedia system with Yandex. Auto services.
There are not very many proposals for the Kuge: the second-generation crossover did not become a hit. In the indicated budget, it is most realistic to find a restyled car with front-wheel drive and in an average configuration, but from the first owner. True, most likely, you will have to run around car dealerships: private owners prefer to take Ford into a trade-in. The combination of a naturally aspirated 2.5 engine (150 hp) and a 6-speed automatic transmission makes Ford more dynamic - acceleration "to a hundred" takes 10.7 seconds. But the fuel consumption (the same AI-92) will be on average one and a half liters more than that of Crete. Kug rides more interesting - the suspension is tuned more recklessly, but not at the expense of comfort.
You will have to pay for all this with more expensive content. With the same service mileage of 15,000 km, Ford maintenance costs about 1.5 times more. However, the 2.5-liter engine is at least as reliable as the Korean 1.6. But Kuga's “automatic” is more delicate - therefore, experienced owners change the oil in it every 30 thousand km. The chassis of the crossover is comparable in reliability to the Korean one.
And the main disadvantage of Ford is that "aspirated" is available only with front-wheel drive. Versions with all the leading ones relied on the uncontested 1.5-liter Ecoboost turbo engine (150 hp). It is more sensitive to fuel quality, and repairing the boost system can result in significant expenses. However, it is difficult to buy a three-year-old Ford Kug4x4 for the price of a new Creta.
Absolutely better than the Crete Atlas only by the spaciousness in the cabin, its trim and soundproofing. But the ergonomics are so-so: there are few places for small things, landing in a cramped chair will not suit everyone, the steering wheel adjustment ranges are small. The thresholds are not covered by anything. Geely's trunk is surprisingly small (320/397) and the floor is very high. And Geely's equipment in the most common Comfort configuration is poor. There are electric front seats, but heated steering wheel and windshield are not available. And the media system does not amaze with functionality.
There are not very many offers to buy a Chinese car. The most popular version is a crossover with a 2.4 engine (149 hp) paired with an automatic transmission. It is easy to find such an option from the first private owner with a range of up to 100 thousand km. Front- and all-wheel drive vehicles are on sale approximately equally. Other versions of the Atlas - a two-liter aspirated engine and a 1.8 turbo engine - are not popular.

Despite the larger and more powerful 2.4-liter engine, the heavy, front-wheel-drive Atlas is unhurried. And the all-wheel drive Atlas is even slower. At the same time, fuel consumption is at least a couple of liters more than that of Crete, and AI-92 fuel is not even recommended for use. For the omnivorous suspension of Geely, you have to pay with handling: in corners, the Chinese crossover surprises with strong rolls and early slips. Off-road with a very modest ground clearance of 163 mm, the Atlas has nothing to do.
And there are questions about the reliability of this model. Everything is fine only with the body - the tendency to corrosion is not noticed behind it. But it is worth remembering that the guarantee against perforating corrosion is a modest 60 months or 100 thousand kilometers. And in February 2021, after several incidents of fire, information appeared about the recall of all Atlas sold in the Russian Federation. The fuel pipes are to blame.
The engine, gearbox and suspension of the "Chinese" pleases little. Engine 2.4 is a copy of Toyota's 2AZ-FSE, but there are a lot of difficulties with it: not very successful cylinder head design, sensitivity to overheating, oil burner and demanding fuel quality. The six-speed "automatic" is thoughtful, and with age it begins to twitch and kick. Due to uneven wear of one of the clutches, vibrations may appear on the move. A comprehensive repair of the Geely suspension may be required already at a mileage of 50 thousand km, especially if the car often travels with a full load.
At the same time, the maintenance of Atlas will cost more than Crete. Standard maintenance costs about the same, but it will have to be done more often - every 10 thousand km. And the Geely dealer network is not developed throughout the Russian Federation.
Haval attracts with the most spacious interior among the cars presented here, good noise insulation and a huge trunk - 808/1216 liters! True, the finishing materials are completely tough and there are complaints about ergonomics. There are few places for small things, the thresholds are not covered by anything, and not all drivers will be satisfied with the range of seat and steering wheel adjustments.
The H6 is equipped with a claim to luxury. The electrically adjustable seats are upholstered in decent eco-leather, and there is an electric sunroof in the roof. There is even an illumination of the space near the doors in the form of the Haval logo.
But there are few proposals for the H6. You can find a crossover with an uncontested 1.5-liter turbo engine with 143 hp, paired with automatic transmission or mechanics and, most likely, with front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions are very rare on sale. But almost all cars from the first owner, and with children's runs up to 50 thousand km, which is suspicious. Half of the sellers are car dealerships, where cars often end up with trade-in programs.

A more torquey engine and a well-tuned six-speed automatic transmission don't give Haval much of a dynamic advantage. At the same time, AI-95 (AI-92 is also acceptable) H6 consumes on average one and a half liters more than Crete. The "Chinese" dampens irregularities well - it is a pity that suspension breakdowns occur at full load. The minimum clearance is 180 mm.
Haval can be proud of the reliability of the units of its crossover. The body of the H6 is in no hurry to rust, and "crickets" do not start in the cabin. The turbo engine, based on Toyota's four 1NZ-FE, has no problems with either the oil burner or the turbine. The automatic transmission developed by Hyundai-Kia does not cause trouble with timely oil change. The all-wheel drive design of the N6 is successful. The suspension, structurally similar to the HondCR-V, can travel 100,000 km or more without a bulkhead.
But such a set of advantages comes at a price. In terms of content, H6 is more expensive than Crete: an ordinary maintenance service for a "Chinese" is at least 30% more expensive. And Haval needs to be serviced more often - every 10 thousand km.
KiSportage is a little more spacious and more practical than Crete: the trunk is larger (491/1480 l), with a wide opening and an organizer in the underground, more places for small things. But the finishing materials are also inexpensive, the thresholds are not covered by anything, the sound insulation is weak, the graphics and multimedia capabilities are modest. And in general, the equipment is not richer - the average Sportage with mileage in this budget is sold in a rather modest Comfort version.
The selection of pre-owned KiSportage is limited. It will be either a pre-styling "three-year plan" or a restyled Sportage 2018-2019 release. And in any case - with front-wheel drive and a two-liter engine (150 hp) in combination with "mechanics" or automatic transmission. Finding a crossover with a range of 40-50 thousand km will not be difficult, but most likely there will be two owners.

The two-liter Sportage is more dynamic than the Cret1.6 in acceleration to 100 km / h in just a second, and the consumption will be comparable. And the six-speed "automatic" is well tuned. However, driving fast on Ki is interesting only on a good road - smoothness and energy consumption are not among its advantages.
There are claims to the reliability of the Sportage. In a two-liter engine, scuffing in the cylinders is possible. Fully independent suspension and steering rack are not very durable. For example, rear pillar bushings require replacement approximately every 20 thousand km. The body, like Crete, has a thin layer of paintwork and soft varnish, so it quickly becomes covered with chips and scratches.
In terms of content, the two-liter front-wheel drive Sportage will require a little more money than the Cret1.6. The difference in the cost of maintenance is about 10%, the frequency is the same.
The Qashqai finish cannot be called chic, but the interior is still above the “budget” level: high-quality materials, well-thought-out ergonomics, doors cover the thresholds. However, the sound insulation of the wheel arches is unimportant (this shortcoming was corrected only with a planned restyling). The trunk is significantly more spacious only with the rear sofa unfolded (430/1585 l). And in terms of equipment, the average Nissan does not stand out in any way against the background of Crete.
Both pre-styling and updated Qashqai fit into our budget. The latter are very few, and only in the version with a 1.2-liter turbo engine (115 hp) with a manual transmission or a variator. Look for a two-liter 144 hp engine. will have to be among older cars, and there will be no all-wheel drive in our budget. But you can count on the mileage in the region of 50-60 thousand km and one owner for the TCP. Half of the cars are sold through car dealerships.

In theory, only the two-liter Qashqai will please the dynamics, which takes about 10 seconds to reach 100 km / h. However, the consumption will be rather big (and only AI-95 gasoline is needed), and the variator does not like too active driving. The turbo engine is less dynamic, but economical. However, the Qashqai does not at all dispose to fast driving on our roads, especially the pre-styling one - it has too shaky and flabby suspension. Restyled cars have become noticeably more comfortable.
Both Japanese engines, despite the chain prone to stretching after 100 thousand km, are quite reliable. The main question when choosing a Qashqai is the variator. The turbo engine is powered by the Jatco JF015e unit, which suffers from rapid belt and cone wear. The two-liter engine got the JF016e box, in which the valve body often fails. The resource of both variators is about 150 thousand km.
With other components and assemblies, too, everything is not very good. Qashqai wheel bearings may require replacement without serving even 100 thousand km. The resource of the steering rack is about 50 thousand km. Nissan's paint is thin and soft, so scratches and chips appear frustratingly quickly. Additional protection is required for the radiator, and the interior takes a long time to warm up and quickly begins to creak.
Finally, the Japanese crossover is more expensive to maintain than the Korean one. Basic maintenance for Nissan costs at least 20% more. Replacing plugs in either of the two engines is required every 30 thousand km - for comparison, Cret1.6 allows this operation to be carried out every 60 thousand km.
Is the game worth the candle?
Of course, buying any car is an individual choice for everyone. But, summing up our research, we can say with high confidence that the new Hyundai, albeit a “budget” one, is definitely not the worst option.
Definitely not worth considering a used one instead. Geely atlas … Reliability is questionable, maintenance is expensive and troublesome. And most importantly: the Chinese crossover does not provide any special advantages in everyday use.
Better, but also far from ideal Nissan Qashqai … It is cute, comfortable and practical, but the Japanese car is let down by its delicate and expensive equipment. And in general, he is not so much a conqueror of directions as a city dweller with increased ground clearance and stylish appearance.
But the other three crossovers make you seriously think about what to choose: a new car or a used car. Ford Kuga it will be more pleasant to use and, if you do not chase the all-wheel drive, it will be able to drive for a long time without serious damage. But the further, the more rare these crossovers will become, which can create problems with maintenance. And with the subsequent sale.
KiSportage more practical, and there will always be demand for it. The service is inexpensive. Only it is not much more spacious than the Creta, and the equipment for the same money will be about the same - only already used, not new.
Finally, Haval H6 - large and well-stocked. At the same time, it does not have critical reliability problems, although it will be more expensive to service the Chinese crossover. And the main disadvantage of this option will be the brand image and, as a result, the rapid loss of the price of the car with attendant difficulties in selling.
