Ford To Discontinue Mondeo After Nearly 30 Years Of Production

Ford intends to stop production and sales of the Mondeo sedan and station wagon in Europe, and the model will not have direct heirs. As Autocar clarifies, this is due to the growing popularity of crossovers, and a cross-coupe will take the vacant place in the lineup.

• At the beginning of this century, the Mondeo family, which appeared on the market in 1993, was considered one of the most popular Ford models: in 2001, its sales exceeded 86.5 thousand copies. The Ford Mondeo was also sold in Russia at one time. However, the growing popularity of crossovers has led to the fact that Mondeo was almost out of demand.
• According to the publication, in 2020 the concern managed to sell only 2,400 cars of this model, and crossovers accounted for almost 40% of the total sales volume (plus 8% compared to the previous year). According to a company spokesman, Ford intends to develop the model line in such a way as to meet the needs of customers, and therefore the Mondeo family will be discontinued next March.

• Thus, in 2022, only the Fiest and Focus will make up the passenger part of the Ford lineup. Mondeo's place will be taken by the newest cross-coupe, the prototype of which was first noticed on tests back in January this year. It is assumed that it will receive a "digital" salon, and the bulk of the power plants will be hybrid. Given that Ford intends to abandon the Mondeo name, a different name will be coined for the new product, which is due to be presented by the end of this year.
• The Ford Mondeo itself experienced the last update in 2019. The exterior and interior were improved for the family, and hybrids and improved diesel engines appeared in the engine range.
