In February 2021, 111.5 thousand new passenger cars were registered in Russia, which is 1.3% more than a year earlier. The Russian car market returned to growth after four months of decline. However, according to the results of the first two months of 2021, the statistics are not so joyful: still minus 3% and 208.7 thousand cars.

Subcompact cars (A-class)

Minicar sales in Russia have almost stopped due to the update of the most massive and, by and large, the only model in the segment, KiPicanto. New cars reached dealerships only in March, and pre-styling Picantos ended much earlier. In February, only 15 cars of class "A" were registered (minus 91%), and in 2 months - 35 cars (minus 89%).

Compact cars (B, B + -class)

The number of registered cars of segments “B” and “B +” increased by 5%, to 45.4 thousand units. The segment's share increased to 40.7% (plus 1.4 points).

LadGrant and Vest steadily increased their audience in February, although by the results of two months Vesta was still slightly in the red. KiRio added significantly less than the flagship of AvtoVAZ in a month, but the dynamics of sales for two months is better.

Almost all models in the top 10 of the segment came out in plus at the end of February, and the best result was shown by the sedan Hyundai Solaris. A drop in demand was recorded only for the Volkswagen Polo, but immediately by a quarter.

Polo was marked by an anti-record and following the results of two months. Good dynamics for the same period was recorded for LadLargus and Xray, and for the hatchback this is the second good month in a row after a long strong fall. In the near future, we can expect additional growth in demand for Largus, an updated version of which went on sale.

Sales of almost all models that did not make it into the top 10 turned out to be lower than last year, but due to small volumes, they did not have a significant impact on statistics.

In January-February, less than 600 Datsun on-Do and mi-Do were registered (minus 81%, both models were discontinued), almost half a thousand Chevrolet (Nexi and Spark), and one and a half hundred Mini (minus 19%).

For 2 months, 84.9 thousand cars of this segment were registered, which is similar to the indicator of 2020. However, the segment's share since the beginning of the year has grown to 40.7% (plus 1.2 points).

"Golf class" slightly slowed down the decline: minus 35.8% in February, 3.2 thousand cars. The share decreased to 2.8% - by 1.6 points at once.

The new SkodOctavi confidently leads the segment, even despite the problems with issuing cars that occurred in late January - early February. Its closest pursuers KiCeed and Cerato sank in sales by half, and in total found only 1.2 thousand owners.

The best performance was recorded for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, but this came against the backdrop of low sales of the model a year ago, when it first hit dealerships. Nevertheless, the "German" is in good demand, although it is inferior to the main competitor - Mercedes-Benz CLA. In general, the demand for premium brand models decreased by 40%.

In February, the Peugeot 408 sedan managed to gain a plus, which remained outside the top 10 (21 cars, plus 17%). According to the results of two months, the demand for "Frenchman" fell by 5.4%, to 35 units.

In January and February, 5.4 thousand cars were registered, which is 42% less than in the same months in 2020. The share decreased to 2.6% (minus 1.7 points).

Large cars (D-class)

In the “D” segment, the demand grew by 10% - up to 5.9 thousand cars. The segment's share is 5.3% (plus 0.4 points).

The bestseller of the class - ToyotCamry - slightly slowed down the decline, but sales of the Japanese sedan in February were only 9% higher than that of the KiK5. The Korean, in turn, has become more popular than its predecessor: it was chosen by 29% more customers than KiOptim last year.

At the end of two months, the Camry is 15% ahead of the K5. At the same time KiK5 is ahead of last year's sales of Optima by 19%.

The BMW 3 Series Sedan showed good growth.Perhaps the "Bavarian" took part of the audience from the Mercedes-Benz C-class, which remained outside the top 10 (29 units, minus 87% in February and 87 units, minus 80% in 2 months). Sales of cars of the current generation are ending smoothly, because in the second quarter of this year, sales of a new "Tsashka" will start.

The record growth in February was recorded in the Subaru Outback (+72 percent), although in absolute terms the sales of the model are very small - only 43 units. In 2 months, Hyundai Sonata improved better than others, but the Outback also boasts a good result.

In February, a new representative of the segment, JAC J7, appeared on the roads, and 66 cars have already been registered. Although some of them are most likely registered by dealers for test drives.

In January and February, 9.1 thousand D-class cars were registered, which is 12.9% less than last year. The share decreased to 4.4% (minus 0.5 points).

The demand for business class cars increased by 19.4% to 1.6 thousand cars.

For most models, the positive dynamics is due to the low base effect. Some of them were not in high demand a year ago (for example, the Lexus ES). Sales of others declined amid expectations of model updates - for example, the BMW 5 Series and 6 Series GT, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and a few others.

New for 2020 - the Porsche Taycan electric car - almost caught up with Panamera. And at the end of two months, Taikans were registered as often as Audi A7, BMW 8 Series and Porsche Panamer taken together!

According to the results of two months of 2021, 3 thousand cars of this segment were registered, which is 11.4% more than a year ago.

Luxury cars (F-class)

The segment of luxury cars decreased by almost a quarter: only 214 cars were registered (excluding SUVs), minus 23%.

The main reason for such dynamics is the market expectation of an updated Mercedes-Benz S-class (67 units, minus 36.2% in February and 92 units, minus 46.2% in 2 months) and Maybach S-class (16 units, minus 65.2% and 27 units, minus 63.5%). The base model went on sale at the end of 2020, but the issue of cars started only in March. Maybachs will not reach buyers until summer, so now there are not even prices for a luxury sedan.

Against this background, the leader - BMW 7 Series - temporarily remained almost without competitors: sales of the model are growing steadily (92 units per month, plus 31.4% and 158 units in two months, plus 33.9%). According to the results of two months, a quarter more "sevens" were registered than a year ago, and almost twice more than "ES-classes".

Audi A8 (21 units, plus 16.7% and 35 units, as well as a year ago) and Genesis G90 (11 units, plus 37.5% and 30 units, plus 150%) also became the leaders in the segment.

Within 2 months, 30 luxury cars were registered: Aston Martin DBX (1 unit), Bentley Bentayg (3 units), Continental (3 units) and Flying Spur (5 units), Ferrari GTC4Lusso (1 unit), Lamborghini Huracan (1), Rolls-Royce Cullinan (9), Ghost (2) and Wraith (5).

In January and February, 352 F-class representatives were registered (minus 24.3%).

Crossovers and SUVs

The demand for crossovers and SUVs grew by 3%, to 55 thousand units. The segment's share reached 49.3% (plus 0.8 points).

The segment leader, Hyundai Cret, recovered after an unsuccessful January and gained a plus following the results of two months. A confident second place went to ToyotRAV4. A good result was shown by Renault Duster, which climbed to the third line.

For the second month in a row, Chery Tiggo 4 is in the top 10 - now it is the most popular Chinese crossover in Russia. He also recorded a record dynamics in the ranking. In addition, it surpassed last year's bestseller Haval F7 by 37% (taking into account the F7x model), and according to the results of two months, the Tiggo 4 turned out to be 1.5 times more popular than the F7.

In general, the growth rate of the popularity of the "Chinese" is striking for the second year in a row: in February they added 83%, in 2 months - 52%. In absolute terms, the figures reached 6.5 thousand and 9.9 thousand cars, respectively. Among the popular models in January and February, the Haval F7 (together with the F7x) added well - plus 78% (1.2 thousand units), and more “fresh” models - Geely Coolray (684 units) - Haval H5 (600 pcs.) and Chery Tiggo 8 (392 pcs.). Sales of Geely Atlas dipped slightly (minus 15.4%, 871 units) and quite strongly - Changan CS35 (minus 45.9%, 320 units).

The demand for crossovers of premium and luxury brands increased by 5%, 8.2 thousand cars were registered. The leader is Lexus RX (593 units, minus 30.2% in February and 1.4 thousand units, minus 14.2% in two months).In second place is the record holder BMW X6: sales increased 2.5 times (592 units and 1.1 thousand units, respectively). Competing Mercedes-Benz GLE (386 units, plus 19.1% and 675 units, plus 20.5%) and GLE coupes (247 units, minus 16.5% and 424 units, minus 14.6%) are noticeably lagging behind. However, in the "competition" of flagship models Mercedes-Benz GLS (354 units, plus 3.5% and 616 units, minus 3.3%) overtakes BMW X7 (269 units, minus 27.1% and 536 units, minus 16.3%).

BMW X3 closes the top three (505 units, minus 1.6% and 857 units, minus 10.9%), winning over GLC (258 units, minus 10.1% and 490 units, minus 18.3%) … In just 2 months, 15.6 thousand premium SUVs were registered (plus 5%).

In January and February, 103,700 crossovers and SUVs were registered (minus 0.5%). Their share is 49.7% (plus 1.2 points).

Pickup trucks

Demand for pickups fell by a quarter, with 620 vehicles registered.

Sales of UAZ "Pickup" decreased by 27.6% (144 units), the model was only on the third line of the rating. The second place was taken by ToyotHilux (157 units, minus 17.8%), the leader is Mitsubishi L200 (194 units, minus 23.6%).

According to the results of two months, the first place in the top 3 remains for the Russian pickup (327 units, minus 24.5%), the second is still ToyotHilux (282 units, minus 28.1%), the third - for the Mitsubishi L200 (263 pcs., Minus 41.2%).

The freshest pickup on the Russian market - GWM Wingle 7 - confidently climbed to the fourth line of the rating: 39 cars were registered in February, 79 cars were registered in 2 months. The indicator of the closest pursuer - JAC T6 - 33 and 50 cars, respectively.

Following the Mercedes-Benz X-class, the Volkswagen Amarok left the Russian market: in 2021, the remaining 33 units were sold.

Over two months, 1,100 pickups were registered (minus 30.3%).

BMW 4 Series (including M-versions) with a fivefold increase in audience climbed to the first line of the rating and, according to the results of two months, was only 1 car ahead of Mercedes-Benz E-class - last year's segment leader. These two models currently account for about 70% of the market.

A fairly rare model in the ranking is the Ford Mustang. All 7 registered cars this year were imported privately.

In January and February, 440 segment models appeared on the roads of the country (minus 6%).
