Ki has revealed details of the new iMT six-speed manual transmission announced for the revamped European Rio hatchback. The main feature of the new unit is the absence of a mechanical connection between the transmission and the clutch pedal.

-
The iMT transmission is paired with a 48-volt starter-generator. By depressing the clutch pedal, the driver gives a signal to the electric actuators to close or open the clutch between the transmission and the engine.
- When coasting, the electronics automatically turns off the motor until it stops completely. When the engine needs to be started again, the starter-generator spins it up to the required speed and discreetly connects it to the transmission, maintaining the gear previously selected by the driver.
- The new transmission was developed at the German technical center of the Hyundai Motor Group, which includes the Kia brand. Mechanics still account for more than half of Korean car sales in Europe, and according to the developers, the new product will help maintain the manual transmission after further tightening of environmental emission standards: iMT helps to reduce CO emissions2 by three percent in real operating conditions.
- The new six-speed "mechanics" can be combined with both gasoline and diesel engines. In addition to the Rio, iMT will receive hybrid modifications of the Ceed family, including the Xceed cross-hatchback.
