In Russia, License Plates Were Allowed With Any Three-digit Region Codes, Except 666

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia has approved changes that expand the number of combinations of region codes for license plates. If earlier a three-digit code could start only with 1 or 7, now the Ministry of Internal Affairs allowed the use of any numbers from 1 to 9. Kommersant writes about this.

• In February, when the first information about the preparation of a new order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs appeared, representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church expressed concern that numbers with the code 666 would be issued in the Sverdlovsk region. However, the local traffic police told RIA Novosti that the introduction of such a code was not planned. Now in the Sverdlovsk region there are numbers with the region 66, 96 and 196.
• The Ministry of Internal Affairs decided to expand the list of regional codes due to the fact that the set of characters for car license plates will soon end. For example, at the beginning of 2020, the last 797 series available for Moscow began to be issued, the code 790 appeared in the Moscow region, and 774 in the Chelyabinsk region.

• The order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs comes into force ten days after publication. True, the new numbers will not appear soon: the head of the Union of State Registration Labels Producers Lyudmila Sherstneva said that the combinations of the current codes should be enough for several more years.
