The authorities in the Chinese city of Guangzhou have launched an investigation into the strong vibration of the Humen Bridge. It began to sway when there were several hundred cars on it. According to the Global Times, traffic on the bridge was blocked.

  • After the bridge was closed, engineers examined the structure and found no damage. Ge Yaojun, President of the International Association of Bridges and Building Structures, who is involved in the investigation, suggested that the bridge began to sway due to emergency barriers installed during the repair. They could change aerodynamics in strong gusts of wind.
  • Plastic barriers with a height of 1.2 meters were removed, but the bridge still continued to wobble, albeit with a smaller amplitude. The management company of the Humen Bridge said that this is happening by inertia and the vibration will stop soon. Traffic on the bridge will resume after a final check.

The length of the six-lane Humen Bridge is 16 kilometers. It was opened in 1999 to connect Guangzhou and Dongguan City, which is one of the industrial centers of Guangdong province.
