All fire trucks are cool. Because any car can create a flammable situation, and only a few can prevent it or eliminate the consequences. But in the world there are a number of cars that are able to impress more than the Urals, KAMAZs and MAZs of the familiar red color. Today we are talking about the ten most unusual "fires".

Mercedes-Benz Nürburg 460 Kraftfahrspritze

The Nürburg 460 was developed in 1928 by Ferdinand Porsche. The elegant limousine with in-line eight-cylinder engine was positioned as a competitor to the Horch 8, but due to the old-fashioned "high" frame did not enjoy the expected popularity among wealthy gentlemen. But Mercedes-Benz would not be itself if it did not turn the disadvantages of its car into advantages.

The high ground clearance allowed the Nürburg 460 to drive where there were no roads, so several multifunctional vehicles were built on the W08 chassis. Including 9 special vehicles for fire services in Lisbon (Portugal), where a military dictatorship was established after the 1926 revolution. Firefighting limousines were equipped with 350-liter water tanks, powerful pumps, 100-meter hoses, and folding ladders attached to the sidewalls of the body.

Just to understand: Imagine an S-Class firefighter in 2020 …

CESquadrCorse is the division responsible for fire safety at most of Italy's racing circuits. These guys helped put out the fire after the accident that happened at the start of the 1978 Italian Grand Prix, when Ronnie Peterson suffered a fracture of both legs and Vittorio Brambilla passed out after being hit by a flying wheel in his helmet.

Firefighters need high-speed vehicles to respond quickly. And CESquadrCorse had them. The first special vehicles of the detachment in 1967 were modified Maserati Quattroporte sedans - the pickups created by Luciano Conti and Paolo Moruzzi carried fire monitors in the luggage boxes. Compressors and foam concentrates were also installed there. In short, the rescuers had everything at their disposal to be in time.

By the way, at the Nürburgring the role of the fire engine was played for some time by the Porsche 911. We talked about it in this selection.

TACR2 (Truck Fire-Fighting Airfield Crash Rescue 2, which can be translated as "second generation airfield rescue fire engine") was in the service of the air and naval forces of Great Britain from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s. Several of these SUVs have even been based on aircraft carriers!

The TACR2 is a first generation Range Rover with a third axle (no traction), a roomy rear trunk and a Follow Me badge aft. A water tank, a compressor, a foaming agent, several ladders and light fire extinguishers are installed on board. It is unlikely that it will be possible to extinguish a flaming fighter with such a machine, but it is quite possible to eliminate a local fire.

Most museums of the British Air Force have at least one TACR2.

The Soviet Union also lacked amazing fire engines. For example, Zil-Sides VMA-30, which was created by VO "Vneshtekhnika" together with the French firm Sides.

The frame and the ZIL-131 engine are hidden under the massive body. According to the project, the body panels were supposed to be fiberglass, but for the sake of greater reliability and fire resistance, they were still made metal. Because of this, the car turned out to be heavier than planned. And this in many ways scared off potential buyers of the model - and even coupled with a large price tag.

Only two copies of the VMA-30 were built, one of which led the convoy of Soviet firefighting equipment at the Olympics-80. After the Games, the miracle-ZiL entered service in the fire department of the Moscow region of Leningrad, where he worked until the early 90s, when his engine broke down. They did not look for a direct replacement for him, because the need for a massive fire truck in the city was scanty.

However, the VMA-30 has many interesting solutions: a cabin for firefighters with plastic chairs (so that they are less dirty and do not dry out from moisture and a fire uniform, like wooden ones), foreign high-pressure pumps, French Cibie headlights. It's even a pity that the Soviet-French project did not work.

Since there are many oil fields in the world, the need for specialized equipment that will help extinguish a fire in a well has almost always existed. The apotheosis of engineering was the Big Wind machine, created in friendly Bulgaria in 1991. True, the car was not invented for the USSR, but for Kuwait.

Big Wind was a T-34 tank chassis, which housed two RD-25-300 turbojet engines from a MiG-21 fighter. Three nozzles were placed above the engine nozzles, which, supplying water to the turbojet jets, formed a gas-water mixture. Such a flow not only deprived the seat of combustion of oxygen, but also immediately cooled it. On average, it took Big Wind only 10-15 minutes to eliminate one fire at a well!

To control this chariot, three people were required: a driver, an operator and a gunner, who could not find a place in the cockpit: they had to catch up with Big Wind on foot. Fortunately, the car was not driving fast: the operating speed was 5 kilometers per hour.

It's hard to imagine a fire truck even more versatile than the Iveco Magirus Marconi Duffy. Thanks to its high ground clearance, it is not afraid of off-road conditions. And on city streets, he also feels great: two of the three axles are rotary. Finally, thanks to the sealed superstructure above the chassis, the Duffy can float. Literally like a boat.

On a hard surface, the car is driven by a 280 hp Iveco turbodiesel. It is paired with an Allison automatic transmission that delivers traction to all six wheels. When it comes time to move on the water, two Ultrajet jet propellers come into play - Duffy is capable of sailing at speeds up to 15 kilometers per hour. The car has a small water cannon in the front part for reversing through the water.

By default, Iveco Magirus Marconi Duffy comes without fire extinguishing equipment - it is chosen by the customer. Moreover, the amphibian can be purchased without any additional equipment at all, in the rescue and landing version. In this situation, 12 people can be accommodated in the back.

Jaguar S-Type R Silverstone Fire Tender

Rapid response fire engines have not lost their luster in the 21st century. For example, in the fall of 2002, a special Jaguar S-Type R entered the disposal of the Silverstone track, which, despite its almost standard appearance, also knows something.

Outside, the S-Type R firefighter stands out only in Phoenix Red paint with a yellow stripe and flashing lights on the roof. Inside, there are much more changes: the seat of the rear sofa was taken by a 90-liter foam cylinder to which an eight-meter fire hose is connected, the front seats are replaced with Recaro buckets, and the entire cage is framed by a roll cage. Four more light fire extinguishers are in the trunk.

The power unit of the S-Type R in the fire version remains the same. Under the hood was a 400-horsepower V8 with a compressor that accelerated the sedan to 100 kilometers per hour in just 5.5 seconds.

The name of this car is difficult to pronounce and almost impossible to remember, but it is worth knowing it by sight. At least due to the fact that the crews of this truck can extinguish fires at a height that others only dream of!

The Skylift folding lift is capable of lifting to a height of 112 meters. That is, almost 30 floors! However, the functionality of the truck is not limited to fire extinguishing - it is also quite suitable for installation and cleaning works at height.

Of the seven Bronto Skylift axles on the Mercedes Actros chassis, only the middle two cannot turn, so the superfire has no problems with maneuverability. The thrust of the turbodiesel engine is supplied to four axles out of seven, which, however, is clear directly from the name.

If fire trucks were given some style awards, then Skeeter's six-wheeled Ford F-550 could claim the grand prize. It's not a shame to drive up to a club on such a big guy, even if nothing is on fire in it, except for a couple of B52 cocktails.

However, this pickup also knows how to extinguish real fires. In the bowels of the massive rear superstructure, a 2270-liter water tank is hidden, and the front hose has a multi-point system and remote control. Plus, the trunks contain a lot of additional equipment needed to fight fire and save people, such as hatchets and ladders.

The F-550 also has a power bumper, winch and feisty tires, as this model was made to put out fires in hard-to-reach places.

In addition to large trucks and SUVs, there are escort fire trucks in European (and not only) countries. Which deliver additional equipment to the site or pave the way for full-fledged firefighters through dense traffic.

In Germany, this function is assigned to both quite familiar passenger cars, such as the BMW X3 / X5, and small cars, such as the Opel Adam or BMW i3. Cool, yeah? And environmentally friendly, by the way.

In most cases, such fire engines have on board a couple of additional fire extinguishers, a first aid kit with an extended set of medicines and other oversized cargo. But even such a trifle can help in the fight against fire. By the way, in the 1960s, this role was successfully performed by the BMW Isetta.
