Video: Moscow Bit: 10 World Premieres That Took Place At The Moscow Motor Show
We've already lost count of how many automotive events have fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic this year. One of the recent additions to the sad list is the Moscow Motor Show, which has been held in even years over the past decade. True, over time, this exhibition has slightly lost its significance, but in its 30-year history there have been very high-profile premieres. We remember the 10 most-most.
Imagine: the E-class in the back of the W210 celebrated its world debut at the Moscow Motor Show. The formal premiere took place at the end of June 1995, and then the novelty was brought to Moscow, where it was shown first to journalists and then to all visitors of the exhibition.
Compared to its predecessor, the new E-Class has become more avant-garde and less angular. This approach allowed not only to win the prestigious Red Dot Design award, but also to improve aerodynamics: the drag coefficient dropped to 0.27. At the same time, the model was also technologically advanced. The list of its options included a rain sensor, automatic climate control, parking sensors, and the line of power units included a motor with a compressor.
In 1999, the E-class W210 was seriously updated, and in 2002 it gave way to the more modern W211. By the way, it is the W210 that is considered the last old-school Mercedes, capable of driving over a million kilometers. They are often found on the streets even today. And versions from AMG have found cult status - especially the E 55.
Almost all new models of AvtoVAZ in one form or another debuted at the Moscow Motor Show. And against the backdrop of LadKalin or concept cars like Project C and 2170, the debut of Nadezhda may not seem so big, but we have two reasons to think otherwise.
First, build quality and corrosion resistance aside, Nadezhda was indeed a bold and innovative project. Even now, four-wheel drive minivans with off-road ambitions are rare, except in Japan. Secondly, the Moscow Motor Show was twice a premiere for the VAZ-2120 model: in 1997, they showed the base car, two years later - the same one, but after a slight update.
For eight years, about eight thousand cars were produced, which were assembled in a pilot production. Rumor has it that the name "Nadezhda" was chosen because of the characteristic design of the front end, which for some reason reminded the factory workers of Nadezhda Krupskaya, the wife of Vladimir Lenin.
Perhaps someone managed to forget, but the frantic Audi RS6 sedan with a twin-turbo V10 was first presented to the world in Moscow - in 2008. Probably, the Germans were guided by the principle "What Russian doesn't like driving fast?" And later, an updated version of the Audi R8 was shown for the first time in Russia.
What was the RS6 like in 2008? Quattro all-wheel drive, a six-speed automatic ZF transmission, a five-liter V10 with 580 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque - all the components of a cool car in place. Not surprisingly, these machines are still popular among tuners.
The last sedan (in the next generations of RS6 there will be only station wagons) accelerated to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.5 seconds. The station wagon took 0.1 seconds more for this. And if you remove the electronic limiter from the RS6, then on the four-door it was possible to overcome the mark of 300 km / h.
Although the Latitude sedan itself turned out to be rather nondescript, it became an important stage in the biography of Renault. The sedan was presented at the Moscow Motor Show in 2010, and it was built on the ready-made Nissan D platform - the same on which the Nissan Teana sedan was created.
It is curious that in Mexico Latitude was sold under the name Renault Safrane - that was the name of the executive hatchback, which was produced before the Vel Satis model. And in the Korean market, the car generally went under the Samsung brand.
The front-wheel drive sedan was offered with diesel or gasoline two-liter "fours", a 2.5-liter gasoline V6, a three-liter diesel, and a 3.5-liter gasoline V6 - it all depended on the market. In Russia, Latitude was sold only with gasoline engines 2.0 and 2.5 and did not find much popularity, unlike Teana.
Few brands have complimented the Moscow Motor Show as much as Mazda. In 2008, the Japanese brought to the exhibition a conceptual crossover Kazamai, created specifically for MIAS. And in 2012, they showed the third generation Mazda6. It was her world premiere.
The new "six" turned out to be so successful that it is being produced to this day - albeit having gone through a deep restyling. The car is still in demand all over the world, and in 2013 it was awarded the World Design of the Year award.
In 2012, the "six" changed both externally and in technique. V6 units, which were offered for the North American market, disappeared from the range of engines, and all inline-fours acquired SKYACTIV technologies with a high, almost diesel compression ratio.
Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG
At the same 2012 Moscow Motor Show, they showed the second generation Mercedes-Benz GL in the AMG version. And yes, it was also the world premiere of a car, a full-fledged competitor to which neither BMW nor Audi has yet made.
The original GL 63 AMG, now called the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63, was powered by a 5.5-liter V8 engine with the M157 index. Initially, it developed 557 horsepower and 760 Nm of torque, but after restyling (and renaming the model), the unit became 20 horsepower more powerful.
Despite the curb weight of 2.5 tons, even the first GL 63 AMG managed to accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.9 seconds!
The AMG version could be identified by its characteristic body kit and branded discs, a four-barrel exhaust system, as well as large brakes. The basic equipment of the crossover included an adjustable air suspension, which pressed the car to the ground as it approached a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour.
Another model that debuted at the 2012 Moscow Motor Show is the fourth generation HondCR-V in European specification. True, the crossover reached those very European dealers only two years later!
The model was produced through 2018 inclusive and was remembered, for example, by the ad featuring Matthew Broderick, shown during the Super Bowl. Depending on the country, the CR-V of that generation was equipped with four-cylinder engines ranging from 1.6 to 2.4 liters. Transmissions - "mechanics", automatic and variator. The fourth-generation CR-V was fitted as standard in most markets with front-wheel drive.
And another important premiere of 2012 is the XRAY concept car, which opened a new chapter in the history of the domestic automotive industry. This prototype marked the beginning of a new corporate identity for Lada, as well as a new line of models, which included Vest and the serial XRAY.
The main achievement of XRAY is the demonstration of the new X-face, invented by Steve Mattin, ex-designer of Volvo and Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to him, even the middle-aged Granta began to play with new colors. And new cars, like VestSW Cross, turned out to be really beautiful even against the background of foreign cars.
Two years later, the XRAY Concept 2 debuted at the Moscow Motor Show, which was much closer to the production version. Alas, the commodity crossover turned out to be not so futuristic. Which, however, does not prevent him from selling well to this day.
One of those rare cases when a car first appears on our market, and then comes out in other countries. Renault Arkan was presented at the Moscow Motor Show in August 2018 - at first the model bore the status of a concept car, but a year later the coupe-crossover went on sale. The differences from the prototype, as the Renault representatives assured, turned out to be minimal.
Like most Russian cars of the French brand, Arkana was built on a modified Global Access trolley (aka B0). However, this is not another Duster, despite the technical similarities. For the coupe-crossover, for example, a 150-horsepower 1.33 turbo engine, made in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz, is offered.
It is much more important that Arkana was developed in the Russian office of Renault and made it especially for our country. At the same time, the off-road vehicle is already being sold abroad. For example, in South Korea, but under the Samsung brand.
For the first time, the Aurus Senat sedan was shown in May 2018, during the inauguration of the president. Then Vladimir Putin arrived at the event in an elongated armored version of the L700. And already in August, at the Moscow Motor Show, the civilian version debuted.
Senate deliveries to customers will begin in March 2021. This was recently announced by the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov. The assembly line will be carried out at the Ford Sollers plant in Yelabuga. In the meantime, the production of Aurus is focused on the facilities of NAMI, so the volumes are small.
Prices for the civilian Aurus S600 start at 18 million rubles. The car is equipped with a hybrid power plant consisting of a 4.4-liter V8 and an electric motor. The total output is 598 horsepower. Later, the line of engines will be replenished with an in-line "turbo-four", as well as a "king-engine" V12 with four turbines, which will develop 860 horsepower.
