Video: The Crisis Stimulates Demand: How In Reality New Cars Were Sold In March
In March 2020, there were 160.6 thousand new passenger cars were registered… it 22.7% morethan a year ago. March 2020 was the most successful month in the last two years, since January 2018, when the market grew by 31%. In total, 375.6 thousand cars were registered in the first quarter (plus 16.3%).
Alexey Mukhanov, leading analyst at Avto.ru
At the end of March, the steady growth of the automotive market continued, but this trend should not be expected to continue: the ban on the work of car dealerships in most regions and the current self-isolation regime make it almost impossible to fully sell cars. Dealers can only collect applications and prepayments, waiting for the end of restrictions on the movement of people, as well as experiment with online sales and delivery. However, sales via the Internet do not allow us to approach the "usual" level so far. Also, there is no certainty that after the restrictions are lifted, a stream of buyers will rush to dealerships: rising prices and the deteriorating solvency of the population against the backdrop of non-working days reduce the number of potential buyers. On the other hand, against the backdrop of the epidemic and in the near future after its end, we can see an increase in interest in owning a private car even in megacities - primarily due to the continuing distrust of public transport.
Subcompact cars (A-class)
The subcompact segment slowed down slightly: minus 48.7% in March and 409 registered cars. In the first quarter, only 527 vehicles were registered, which is 53.9% less than last year's result.
In fact, only one city car remained on the new car market - KiPicanto, which accounted for 87% of sales or 460 cars in 3 months (minus 50%). Expensive Smart Fortwo (33 units, minus 82%) and Fiat 500 (15 units, plus 150%) are sold an order of magnitude worse than him.
Compact cars (B, B + -class)
In one of the most popular classes of cars in March, a growth in demand was recorded by 10.1% - up to 59.9 thousand cars. However, the segment's share decreased by 4 points - to 35%.
The popularity of LadGrant family cars increased along with the market: plus 21.7% in March and plus 20.7% (29.5 thousand cars) in the first quarter. The demand for the flagship Vest in March, for the first time this year, went into negative territory, therefore, at the end of the quarter, the model showed an increase of a modest 3.3% (26 thousand cars).
In third place is Vesta's competitor KiRio: from January to March, 23.1 thousand owners registered the model, which is 26% more than a year ago. The soplatform Hyundai Solaris with minimal growth in March as a result strengthened its positive dynamics at the end of the quarter: plus 4.3%, 12.2 thousand cars.
The record of sales growth in March was at the Volkswagen Polo. Datsun on-Do has an anti-record. According to the results of three months, only one model - LadXray - fell in the top 10: minus 8.6% and 5.3 thousand cars. The best figures for the quarter are again at VW Polo: plus 33.2%, 13.3 thousand cars.
For three months, 136 thousand cars were registered in the traffic police, which is 11.9% more than a year earlier. The share of cars of classes "B" and "B +" for the quarter decreased to 36.2%, by 1.4 points.

From January to March, the dynamics of sales in the top ten amounted to 26%, 16 thousand cars. This is largely due to the high popularity of the pair of leaders - SkodOctavi and KiCerato: they account for more than 70% of the class. In three months, the models have grown their audience by 24% (up to 5.7 thousand) and 77% (4.2 thousand), respectively.

KiOptima, in turn, continued to fall. Over three months, 4.2 thousand sedans were registered (minus 3.8%). Perhaps the sales of the model are declining in anticipation of the release of the new generation of Optima.
Mazda6 lost the third position to Sonata, which it occupied for 2 months in a row. Moreover, according to the results of three months, Hyundai Sonat also outstripped the Japanese sedan: 1310 cars against 1297.

In total, from January to March, 18.2 thousand class “D” cars were registered, which is 3.9% less than a year ago. Their share decreased to 4.8% (minus 1 point).
Business class (E-class)
In March, the segment showed an increase of 5.3% to 1.8 thousand units. However, both leaders, who account for about 60% of sales, went into negative territory. The demand for the 5th series turned out to be worse than last year's even at the end of the quarter (minus 1.3%, 1.5 thousand). "Eshka", despite the fall in March, for three months still remained in a good plus - 17%, 1.3 thousand cars.
The Audi A6 has strengthened its third place, but the popularity of the model is still noticeably lower than that of its leading competitors. Nevertheless, in three months the "six" found 415 owners, which is 5 times more than a year ago, a record in the segment.
Also, at the end of the quarter, demand increased for the 4-door Mercedes-Benz AMG GT (plus 80%, 18 cars), Porsche Panamer (plus 40%, 80 units), Volvo S90 and V90 (plus 71%, 99 units and plus 28%, 128 units, respectively) and Genesis G80 (plus 11.3%, 118 cars).

The number of Hyundai Cret registrations in March increased by 1.5 times, which became a monthly record. From January to March, the crossover was sold 35% better than a year ago, 18.7 thousand cars were registered.
Three models from the top 30 showed three-digit growth: ToyotRAV4 (114%, 5.2 thousand units), Hyundai SantFe (121%, 1.6 thousand) and Subaru Forester (104%, 0.6 thousand). The best dynamics at the end of the quarter belongs to the new RAV4: plus 90%, 11.5 thousand cars and the second position in the segment.
Models of “mass-market” brands were bought more often by 34% (63.1 thousand units). The leaders are the same as in the segment as a whole: RAV4 and Santa Fe. The “former” Chevrolet Niva became an outsider: minus 22.1%, 1.6 thousand units (minus 24.5% in three months, 4.2 thousand). From January to March, 145.3 thousand cars were registered (plus 27.8%).
The demand for SUVs of Japanese brands increased even more - plus 46.3%, to 25.5 thousand units.Of the ten most popular models, only Mitsubishi Pajero Sport turned out to be “in the red”: according to the results of three months - minus 1.5%, 744 cars, according to the results of the quarter - minus 15.7%, 1.8 thousand units. The best growth is with ToyotRAV4. The result of the quarter for Japanese crossovers and SUVs was 59.4 thousand, plus 31%.
The segment of premium crossovers and SUVs grew by 40.1% to 11.3 thousand units. Three of them made it to the top 30 best-selling SUVs in March - Lexus RX, BMW X5 and X7. Among 30 popular premium models, demand declined only for five models: Audi Q5, BMW X1, Lexus LX, Mercedes-Benz GLA-class, Porsche Macan and Volvo XC60. For three months, BMW X1, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Lexus NX and Volvo XC60 remained in the red. In total, 26.3 thousand vehicles were registered (plus 27.2%).
The number of crossovers of Chinese brands has doubled, with 3.8 thousand vehicles registered. This growth is due to the high popularity of the Haval F7: more than 900 owners registered this model in March. But it is worth noting good demand for the entire group of leaders: Geely Atlas, Haval H6, Changan CS35, Chery Tiggo 4, Geely Emgrand 7. From January to March, crossovers of Chinese brands were chosen by 9.8 thousand buyers - plus 91%.
In three months, 182.7 thousand cars of the SUV segment were registered - a quarter more than in the same period of 2019. The share increased by 48.7% (plus 3.4 points).
The popularity of pickups in February added 15.6%, with almost 900 registered vehicles. Demand for the Mitsubishi L200 increased by more than 60% for the second time in a row, allowing the pickup to maintain its class leadership. Despite the "negative" January, according to the results of three months, the model was chosen by 42% more buyers than a year ago - 692 people.
ToyotHilux overtook the Russian UAZ in March, but from January to March Toyota is still behind: 623 vehicles (plus 2.6%) versus 637 units (minus 11.7%) at UAZ. If the trend continues, then in the coming months after the resumption of sales, Hilax has every chance to finally gain a foothold in the second line of the rating.
The premium Mercedes-Benz X-class was marked by record growth. He also holds the record for three months: plus 194%, 150 cars. In addition, a newcomer to the market, the Chinese Jac T6, can boast of good results: for three months in a row, the model has been registered by 11 owners.

The two-door BMW 2 Series also saw a sharp jump in popularity in March, but even more four-door Gran Coupes were registered and reached customers in March.
At the end of the quarter, the best dynamics was shown by the Chevrolet Camaro: plus 246%, but only 38 cars in absolute terms. Demand for the BMW 8 Series coupe fell the most: minus 42%, 33 cars. Since the beginning of the year, the number of registered coupes in Russia has exceeded 1,000 units, which is 58.6% more than a year earlier.
