Mystery Of The Mysterious Mid-engined Mustang Revealed

Ford recently turned to everyone for help finding information on a prototype mid-engined 1966 Mustang found in four archived photographs. The automaker could not find out the history of the mysterious car for five years. However, Jalopnik and Autoblog quickly dealt with this.

• Reporters contacted automotive historian Jim Farrell, who called 13 designers at Ford in the mid-1960s. Among them was Bad Magaldi, who in 1966 did an internship at the brand's design studio in Dearborn, where the pictures were taken.

• Magaldi revealed that the mysterious prototype is a landing mock-up of the concept Ford Mustang Mach 2, which was unveiled at the 1967 Chicago Auto Show. The layout was created by the assembly engineers of the concern from the body panels of the serial 1966 Mustang. The showpiece was built by a subsidiary studio Kar Kraft, using a tubular frame and a fiberglass body.

• Development of the Mustang Mach 2 was classified and carried out in the basement of the studio during overtime, so most of the design center staff were unaware of the mysterious prototype. According to Magaldi, an early plasticine model was later created on its basis, and then destroyed. This was the case with almost all the concepts and prototypes that Ford created in huge quantities in the 1960s.
• Initially, Ford was convinced that the mysterious mockup had nothing to do with the mid-engined Ford Mustang Mach 2 concept. It was believed because of the significant differences in appearance and design between the mock and the show car.
