The laurels of the inventor of the mass car are usually given to Henry Ford without unnecessary disputes. And this is pretty weird. After all, even before the formation of the Ford Motor Company, there was already a company in the United States that shipped cars not even to hundreds, but to thousands of customers every year. It's about Oldsmobile and its founder, Ransom Eli Olds.

His unpretentious Oldsmobile Curved Dash double runabout was a sensation in 1901. One and a half liter single-cylinder engine developed 5 hp. and accelerated the car to 32 km / h. And most importantly: Curved Dash cost only $ 650, or about $ 20,000 in today's money. And it was the first affordable car, not only in America, but all over the world! And it was Olds who first used assembly line technology at his factory - the very same conveyor. Henry Ford will then refine this idea and make the conveyor belt moving, which will increase productivity many times over.

At the end of the 2000s, having quarreled with partners, Olds will leave his own company to found a new one. The famous American truck brand REO is an acronym for Olds' full name. However, Ransom entered the automotive hall of fame precisely as the creator of the first mass and affordable model.

Will there be geniuses in history who have single-handedly made more progress for automobile progress than this American ?! Hardly. The name Charles Kettering is most often remembered in the context of the development of the first electric starter in history. This is indeed one of his most important inventions, but far from the only one!

We should also be grateful to Charles for the car ignition system, the schematic diagram of which has not changed for over a hundred years. Kettering was also among the developers of anti-knock additives in gasoline, thanks to which it was possible to increase the power and efficiency of the internal combustion engine. He participated in the creation of quick-drying car paints, freon for air conditioning systems and refrigerators, experimented with diesel installations and even with aircraft.

Kettering has nearly two hundred patents that extend beyond the automotive business. What can you say, for example, about an incubator for premature babies or about impact-resistant glass ?! Not bad for someone who was forced to leave university due to vision problems.

Of all the main cars of the 20th century, it is LanciLambda, perhaps the most inconspicuous and not pretentious. Meanwhile, it was "Lambda" almost a hundred years ago - the car made its debut in 1922 - that combined a monocoque body, an independent front suspension, brakes on each of the wheels and an aluminum crankcase. All of this is much more like a description of a modern car than the one that actress Greba Garbo once drove.

Thanks to the inquisitive nature of Vincenzo Lanci, the son of a successful canned food merchant from Piedmont, Italy. The boy was supposed to become an accountant at his father's company, but, fortunately for all of us, he became interested in technology. First by bicycles, and then by cars and car races. Vincenzo started out as a mechanic and pilot for FIAT until he founded his own company in 1906.

More of an engineer and designer than a businessman, Lancia made his cars famous for their combination of advanced technical solutions and high quality. In a word, all those that are so lacking in today's Italian cars.

His name is associated with the Cord brand, which sparkled in the American market at the turn of the 30s. For the first time front-wheel drive and hidden headlights appeared on his cars …

In fact, the Cord was only part of Errett's mighty automotive empire, which included the brands Auburn and Duesenberg, Lycoming Engines and Checker Cab, Stinson Aircraft and New York Shipbuilding. Kord was a salesman from God, knew how to get out of the most difficult situations and never gave up. Erret generously paid the best engineers, constructors and designers, and they created unique cars for him: brighter in appearance, more technological, more powerful than all competitors put together.

Under Korda, the majestic Duesenberg J pushed America's most prestigious car from the Cadillac, Packard and Pierce Arrow brands off the throne, and his Auburns - beautiful, powerful and inexpensive - embodied the middle-class dream of the perfect car. What happened then and why did you not hear anything about these cars? It's simple: once Korda got tired of fighting the aftermath of the Great Depression that swept over the US engineering industry, he sold all his assets, invested in a network of radio stations and took up politics. And we can only guess what Kord would have achieved if he had stayed in the automotive business longer.

The original Mini - the most massive of all British cars - has many fathers. Because triumphant projects always have a lot of them. You can recall Leonard Lord, director of the British Motor Company, who initiated the development, and Alex Molton, without whose revolutionary suspension the entire Mini layout puzzle simply would not have worked, and half a dozen other engineers who tirelessly created, cut, made mistakes and tried again … But the main one is still one - Alec Issigonis.

Why? Because at first the British with Greek roots created another, iconic car for the United Kingdom - "Morris Minor". It was thanks to the success of the latter that Issigonis got the position of the head of the ADO15 project, which in a few years will turn into a serial Mini.

This car made Issigonis a knight (in the literal sense - he was awarded the corresponding title), and it showed the whole world what a practical city car should be like in the 20th century. Incredibly efficient use of internal dimensions, modest dimensions, bright driving habits, affordable price for everyone. Until the crossover boom, in the epicenter of which we are right now, all major European hatchbacks were built on this principle: from the Peugeot 205 to the ToyotYaris.

It just so happened that the developers of car safety systems have always remained in the shadow of their achievements. Many people, having rummaged on the Internet, will remember the inventor of headlights or windshield wipers, but who, for example, came up with ABS or an air bag? Only the inventor of the three-point seat belt, the Swede Nils Bohlin, is on everyone's lips. But the name of Bela Bareni, whose inventions underlie the safety of all modern cars, is truly surprising. Who is this anyway?

In fact, Bareni was considered the creator of the original VW Kafer concept back in the 20s of the last century, but he will become truly useful to mankind at Mercedes-Benz. In it, Bel served as director of advanced development from 1939 to 1972. During this time, he will develop and patented, for example, a body with programmed deformation zones, a crash-safe steering column that breaks upon impact, a reinforced passenger compartment frame, reliable fasteners for a removable hard roof of a car, and so on. In total - about 2.5 thousand patents and rationalization proposals. It seems that the respectful nickname "father of passive safety of all cars" deserves them a little more than completely.

Ferdinand Piech - the grandson of the great Ferdinand Porsche - might not work a single day in his life. He was successful in everything. In racing, he revolutionized the Porsche 917 and gave the green light to the Quattro project. He breathed new life into Audi, which was given up in Mercedes-Benz, and the grandiose restart of Bugatti turned into a lifetime monument to his perseverance and perseverance, at the same time becoming a showcase of the technical capabilities of the Volkswagen concern.

In the modern world, driven into the framework of political correctness, Pich ruled with fire and sword.
