Not that this could not be assumed: when buying Volvo ten years ago, Geely founder Li Shufu was attracted not so much by the business potential of a small Scandinavian company as by its engineering competencies. And even if the Swedes failed to teach the Chinese how to make cars, it would be just right to admit that the "damned place" is not only Togliatti, but also the Celestial Empire. It seems to have worked out.
The main thing is to survive the first minutes of studying this thing. Aggressive body kit with a "carbon" splitter in the front and a "rally" wing on the trunk lid, four exhaust pipes with three (!) Cylinders under the hood, red calipers - did Coolray drive through the South Port market on its way to the dealerships? Also, the crooked official site is broadcasting strange things like this: "The new logo is inspired by the idea of 'True Self' and emphasizes the 'limitless possibilities' of the brand." That's exactly what it says!

Well, let's be a little lenient. The Geely brand will somehow figure it out with its website, and the cartoonish body kit will surely appeal to the young audience: really, why not the Audi RS Q3 at minimum salaries? Coolray is still not very suitable for the role of a family car, but more on that below. In the meantime, let's pay attention to the fact that the design itself turned out to be okay, but in details like the complex plastic of the sidewalls with sharp edges of stampings - even interesting. And let's find out what else is interesting for the top version of Flagship Sport (yeah, in Cyrillic) for 1,499,999 rubles.
Recently, the Chinese have become pretty adept at this issue, and the new Geely is only developing a trend. But how! We are dealing with a direct competitor to new market heroes like KiSeltos and SkodKaroq, but Culray's salon easily outperforms them, and some crossovers from the older segment, for which you will have to pay half a million or a million more! "Chinese" pleases with non-trivial architecture (okay, in some places imitating Porsche) and unprecedented attention to detail in this class. That there is at least a corporate ornament in the form of a stylized letter "G", which adorns the "tweeters" in the corners of the doors, steering column levers, rubber mats in niches and so on. And the selection of materials is even royal for a car sold for the present one and a half million rubles. The abundance of appropriate "silver" (better than the fashionable "piano lacquer"), contrasting leatherette throughout the cabin, and most importantly - soft here almost everywhere: both on the front panel and in the upper part of the door cards. Even the back ones, on which everyone is always saving! Combine that with backlighting that shines right through the silver trims at night, and a neat and sturdy build, and you have a setting that is far from simple or budget. Even with serious prejudices regarding the "Chinese", as in my case. However, even without prejudice, one cannot fail to notice several ergonomic jambs. A rare father of a large family will walk around in rapper pants-pipes and with light green hair, and for the hard workers, dissecting on conditional Largus, this has not been noticed.So the informal "outfit" of Geely Coolray fully corresponds to its essence: the cargo capacity is very limited here, but everything is in order with the passenger. Well, so that you can go somewhere with a company light and happily hang out there. You must be wondering what is Chinese and what is Swedish. Let's put it this way: marketing is definitely Chinese. Take, for example, the modular CMA platform on which the Volvo XC40 crossover and the entire line of Lynk & Co, Geely's separate brand for millennials, are built. This "cart", according to official speeches, was developed jointly by Scandinavians and Asians - and the more recent BMA architecture, on which our Coolray is based, was entirely invented in the Middle Kingdom. But … using Volvo's expertise. Understand how you want. Let's leave out the fact that sales of one XC40 are at the same level as all five Lynk & Co models combined - about 130 thousand cars annually - and focus on technology. Architecturally and ideologically, the "purely Chinese" BM is very similar to the "Chinese-Swedish" CM - except that instead of the rear multi-link, a semi-dependent beam is used here, and the wheelbase size varies from 2500 to 2700 millimeters. The CM is rated for a range of 2650 to 2850 mm, but the architecture of the front MacPherson strut and floor panels, for example, is much the same here. In other words, BM is the same CMA, only simpler and cheaper. Under the hood is an uncontested 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine, which has been installed on European versions of the XC40 since the end of 2018. True, there is a small game of forcing here: in Volvo this unit develops 156 horsepower, and for Geely Coolray, the output is increased to 177 “horses” - if we take Chinese and Belarusian specifications. In Russia, the power is reduced to the standard "tax" 150 forces, and this is reflected in the passport dynamics: acceleration to a hundred increased from 7.9 to 8.4 seconds. It is noteworthy that the engine is certified for AI-92 gasoline - there is a corresponding marking on the fuel filler flap. But whether there are many who dare to follow it is an open question. We didn’t dare: you never know … After all, it is with reliability in the case of Culray that the greatest number of questions arise. The engine is not even two years old, the platform is completely fresh, and the transmission is a completely dark horse. The seven-speed "robot" with two "wet" clutches was developed in-house by Geely using foreign components - for example, from LuK, but no oracle can now predict its survivability. Will the daring crossover turn into scrap metal after 100-200-300 thousand kilometers, or will it remain a car? We have no idea. But now he is like a car. Agree, up to this point, the story was quite consistent with the average Chinese car of recent years. Nice design, interesting electronic chips, smart interior, good second row, bad trunk, funny ergonomics mistakes … To one degree or another, all this can be said about modern Chery, Changan and at least the same Geely Atlas, which we had on the test in Last year. In statics, everything is tolerable, the pluses are more or less balanced by the minuses - but as soon as it comes to driving, every "Chinese" throws out something that makes all further conversations meaningless. It has always been this way, but now times have changed. Because Geely Coolray really rides well! No, and not half as daring as it looks: barking with exhaust, throwing dust on the pursuers and disappearing behind the horizon - that's not about him. And the three-cylinder engine does not know how to bark at all. He buzzes frankly faded, but he knows his business - pulls confidently, does not sour after 120 kilometers per hour and almost does not annoy with "odd" vibrations. The transmission is also trained in manners: in most cases, the "robot" acts logically and without jerks, although the DSG rate of fire here, perhaps, cannot be found. The character is closer to similar boxes, which are put on Hyundai and Ki- less fuss, more worries about clutches.But in general, the operating instructions are quite simple: we ride free in sports mode, we crawl through traffic jams as usual, we never touch "eco". And you will be happy. But not a driver's one, no. In turns, Coolray is accurate and clear, the rolls are far from indecent - only the "Chinese" does not reward active driving at all. It slips the front wheels quite early and safely, but sadly slides into the outer trajectory - and something suggests that replacing the Nokian Velcro with a more tenacious summer will not affect the balance much. After all, in general, Geely's manners are very similar to the XC40, and genetics is a strong thing. She, apparently, explains the strange, unnatural effort on the steering wheel - although the rack itself is shorter here, and the steering wheel has to be rotated at smaller angles. However, we have already seen tolerably turning "Chinese" - for example, the same Chery Tiggo 4, which does not hesitate to demand payment for it with your bones and teeth. Comfortable cars from the Middle Kingdom are a dime a dozen, but each of them, including the Geely Atlas, is driven no better than melted jelly. A Coolray really adequately balanced, and this is precisely the main revelation of the test. The chassis here is pretty tight, but Geely does not allow itself hard blows - even the exposed seams on the Third Transport, which can make anyone lose face, it manages to transfer to the cabin in a rounded and not so painful. And in general, the power consumption is in full order here - despite the fact that the test copy is on large 18-inch disks. In general, the character of Culray resembles KiSeltos, but he has more safety margin, and less attention to detail. Who would expect this from a Chinese car? There must, well, there must be at least one large joint that would ruin the overall picture! Maybe soundproofing? No, everything is fine with her too! Not great like SkodKaroq, but acceptable. As with the same Seltos - the main game is played by tires, and the rumble from them is definitely not annoying. But how much is all this joy worth? In Geely Coolray trim levels, there are three of them formally, but actually two and a half. The choice of engine and transmission is not provided at all, and the price list begins immediately with the loud word Laksheri - this is the name of the most modest version at the moment, for which they are asking 1,289,999 rubles. The equipment here is far from poor: there is an electric handbrake, large multimedia, like on a test car, leatherette on the front panel and doors (seats, however, fabric and with mechanical adjustments), panoramic roof, climate control, a full range of heating, keyless access, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera, cruise control, four airbags and automatic mode for all windows. The next version is called Flagship, and you have to pay for it 1 449 999 rubles… The equipment actually copies what you see in the photos: full-LED headlights (Laksheri has a halogen), all-round visibility, front parking sensors, artificial leather on the seats, a car parker, a blind spot monitoring system, digital tidy, interior lighting, black ceiling, curtains safety - and, of course, the red interior trim. Yet 50 thousand rubles from above - and you are the owner of the most top-end version of Flagship Sport. The differences are minimal: mirrors "carbon look", two-tone body paint, rear wing with a proud letter "S" - autochange suggests writing "Y", and this makes a certain sense. But whether it is necessary to pay extra for such tweets, we are not sure. Let's take a better look at where Geely Coolray is in relation to the competition. On the other hand, Geely Atlas is right now the most popular "Chinese" in the Russian market and is gradually gaining a reputation - not only for itself, but for the brand as a whole. It is possible that this will help his younger relative as well. Moreover, Coolray is much, much better as a car.
