With this model, Peugeot once again receives the title of "Car of the Year": the French proudly stamp the corresponding label on the rear window and afterwards release a scaled version of the 3008 - the 5008 crossover, already with three rows of seats. The defibrillators were removed, the oxygen apparatus was turned off as unnecessary: the company, together with its sister Citroen, not only survived, but also managed to buy Opel.
And what was happening with French models in Russia at that time? Around the same years, the PS concern failed several local projects (Peugeot 408, Citroen C4 and C-Elysee sedans) and pretty much lost its reputation. And the biting import price and the inaccessibility of all-wheel drive did not allow the stellar 3008 to get into the top charts: for example, at the end of 2019, “three thousand eighths” sold only 883 units. Smaller than a Mini Countryman!
Is there anything else besides the price and lack of a drive that hinders the dude? Perhaps he simply does not offer what competitors are filling in wagons? We are going to check this on the most packed and at the same time the most popular version of the GT-Line - with a diesel engine and a six-speed "automatic". In the Peugeot price list, such a modification is marked by weighty 2,359,000 rubles.
Even three years later, the Peugeot 3008's interior is still producing wow … no, not like that - a powerful, full-fledged wow-do-not-get-effect. That there is a cleverly contrived i-Cockpit dashboard with a high instrument panel, a keyboard on the center console and upholstery made of unusual denim!
But mastering all this economy is not a task for two or three minutes. To begin with, you have to study each button, understand the logic of the systems and train yourself without looking to get to the right place, which most often turns out not to be where you expected to poke.
But wherever your finger lands, the sensations will be pleasant: smooth metal, jeans, textured, albeit not always soft plastic. The interior of the 3008 is wide both visually and in fact: from door to door there are more centimeters here than most classmates. The visibility is good, and the futurism of the controls almost does not argue with the functionality - you just need to figure it out. Now to the nuances.
By such a parameter as the reserve of space in the back row, "three thousand eighths" with a wheelbase of 2675 mm bypasses venerable competitors such as Sportage, Tucson and even MazdCX-5, which has 25 millimeters more between the axles. Otherwise, Peugeot is a middle peasant, only partly striving for the leaders. The transformation shouldn't surprise those familiar with the capabilities of competing crossovers such as the Tiguan, Kodiaq, or even the C5 Aircross with its sliding rear row. But even here you can find both pleasant little things and convenient solutions, and let's start with the main thing - with liters and meters.
The pride of modern Peugeot, starting with the 308 hatchback, is the modular EMP2 platform. In 2013, the French seriously considered this chassis to be the best in the industry, both in terms of technology and settings. Almost the entire line of two brands is now based on it, as well as the Opel Grandland X, which has joined them. At the same time, EMP2 has no technical tricks: quite a typical front MacPherson strut, no alternative rear semi-independent beam, exclusively mono-drive architecture without a cardan tunnel. But here you can freely increase the wheelbase for a specific model. This is exactly how - by adding 17 centimeters - and the older crossover 5008 turned out.
In European cars, the rear wheels can be driven by a small electric motor as part of a hybrid installation, but in Russia there are no such Peugeots.Under the hoods of our 3008 there are turbo engines of equal power: a 150-horsepower 2.0 diesel or a 1.6 petrol turbo engine, developed in collaboration with BMW. The gearbox is generally the same: a six-speed "automatic" Aisin.
As soon as we talk about the durability of Peugeot, two "popular" themes emerge: a 1.6-liter turbo engine and the ever-abused "robot". Let's clarify right away about the second part: the box with one clutch, which is frankly weak on all fronts, on the "French" has long been replaced by a full-fledged Japanese machine EAT6 from Aisin. Than added points and in terms of reliability: the repair of the transmission with careful operation is not necessary to talk about the first 250-300 thousand kilometers.
As for the direct injection gasoline "four" THP, in the early years it really differed in its capricious disposition, often breaking down on insignificant runs. Later, the engine was modified many times (new cylinder head, oil pump, chain) and now, from purchase to capital, under very favorable circumstances, it can turn out generally three hundred thousand! If not very favorable, the mileage decreases, but still not catastrophically.
The test car is equipped with a two-liter turbodiesel, and this engine is generally almost the standard of reliability. The unit of its own design has a "double" timing drive (chain plus belt) and without any problems "walks" up to 600,000 km, which may require overhaul. Other components, including electronics, are mostly reliable, do not have chronic ailments and do not cause sudden problems.
When asked if the Peugeot 3008 is driving, we will answer: it is coming! The lightweight chassis and lightweight steering wheel with great responsiveness give the crossover a bright and memorable character, which is finally! - does not spoil the transmission. Thanks to the logical "automaton" instead of the capricious "robot"! In pure asphalt disciplines, Peugeot is quite capable of competing with the MazdCX-5 and VW Tiguan.
The suspension has enough manners: it ignores trifles on the road and is condescending to larger irregularities, such as pits or joints in the canvas. And in the sport of the chassis you will not refuse. The 3008 is quite a driver-cross, which you want to take out of the bounds of banal movements. There is a lot of information on the steering wheel, the rolls are small, and in extreme modes it becomes clear that the French were proud of their EMP2 platform for a reason: the 3008 rolls nicely, understandably and very fun.
The acceleration of the two-liter engine is smooth and with a tangible thrust margin, as befits a turbodiesel. And the transmissions quickly and without hesitation click up and down. In Sport mode, the change of steps is even more vigorous, the steering wheel is poured with additional effort, and most importantly, the crossover becomes a little "gasoline" by ear, because a synthetic rumble is fed into the speakers. Fake? Well, other French people - from Renault - have synthesized everything in their Clio RS in a row, from a Formula 1 car to a flying saucer. So let it be.
The only pity is that everything that 3008 captivates and even teases on the road almost completely evaporates in the "pampas". On hummocky dirt roads, a muddy country house or (God forbid) a road driven through a field, Peugeot turns from an unusual and space crossover into an ordinary, grounded passenger car. The stabilization, lulled by off-road modes (or a separate button), keeps vigilant continuously: it strangles, interferes, returns, even when it is not required of it. And the suspension is no longer happy: what was on the asphalt, let it remain on the asphalt. And outside of it, you will be hard, shaking and somewhat stupid. One joy: regardless of what the wheels are jumping on and how loudly the engine growls, external sounds hardly penetrate into the cabin: the sound insulation of the 3008 is five.
But all these are details against the background of the main drawback - incomplete drive. A few control electronics programs and a game of imitation of a differential lock through wheel biting does not really affect anything. In not the most difficult situation, the potential of the 3008 as a crossover may not be enough - approximately, as in the case of the SkodKaroq during the recent triple test.
In a word, in order not to find yourself in a situation of "oh, I have paws", getting out into the mud on a Peugeot, keep in mind its front-wheel drive nature and do not be heroic. And better get high on the asphalt - the crossover is not indifferent to it.
Russian configurations of the Peugeot 3008 are two columns of four lines. Both there and there will be 150 horses and front-wheel drive. But there are also nuances.
The initial version is called Active and is priced at 1 859 000 ₽ and has an impressive list of positions. We count: 17-inch "molding", ABS + ESP, six airbags, halogen headlights with LED running lights, rain and light sensors, heated two sectors of the windshield, rear parking sensors, cruise control with speed limiter, dual-zone "climate", key electronic handbrake, four anti-pinch power windows, front seats with six adjustments and three-stage heating, 12.3-inch digital instrumentation, eight-inch media touchscreen, driver fatigue monitoring and - of course - a gasoline 1.6-liter turbo engine with a torque of 240 Nm …
The diesel surcharge will be 250,000 rubles. For one of the six bodywork "metallics" (for example, for the blue Magnetic Blue, as we have) - from 18,000 to 22,000 rubles. A multi-mode Advanced Grip Control drive washer with ride settings for sand, stones, snow and downhill will require 30,000 ₽. But wireless charging for a smartphone is only 7,000 rubles. What if you need it?
Combination upholstery (leather + fabric), a more predatory bumper and a chrome grille, LEDs in fog lights with cornering lights, roof rails, electric folding mirrors, front parking sensors, the aforementioned Advanced Grip Control driving modes with descent assist and a folding front backrest armchairs are part of the Allure package and are rated at 2 129 000 ₽ with a gasoline engine and in 2 249 000 ₽ with a diesel engine. If this is not enough, you should look at the pre-top Crossway special equipment with a single but stylish interior upholstery made of Alcantara, decorative fabric on the panel, metal accents in the interior and exterior, an abundance of Crossway branded badges, a black roof and standard navigation. Another question is that in Russia thin matters often crumble under the pressure of difficult circumstances - both road-climatic and purely market ones.Therefore, everything one way or another rests on the combination of front-wheel drive and tangible costs - this is what any Peugeot 3008 buyer gets, complete with the car itself. And also - design, charisma, character and feeling of a product made with soul. Do we recommend making such a choice if you suddenly ask? Yes, we will recommend. But we won't be surprised if you make a more traditional choice.
