BMW spoke about the technology of its first production model with a hydrogen propulsion system. The novelty will be built on the basis of the X5 crossover. A concept version of such an off-road vehicle - the i Hydrogen NEXT prototype - was unveiled at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.

  • The hydrogen propulsion system is based on the fifth generation eDrive module, in which the electric motor, mounted at the rear, is assembled as a single unit with the transmission and electronics. Electric cars BMW iX3 and i4 will also receive it. The hydrogen crossover will be equipped with an electrochemical generator with a capacity of 170 hp. (it converts hydrogen into electricity), a buffer battery and a pair of cylinders for storing six kilograms of hydrogen at a pressure of 700 bar.

  • The peak recoil of the power plant is 374 horsepower. The production rear-wheel-drive X5 on fuel cells will be able to travel 560 kilometers on full tanks, and it should take about four minutes to fill the cylinders fully.
  • The hydrogen SUV will go into small-scale production in 2022. Then the production of X6 and X7 crossovers with similar powertrains will begin. Toyota helps in their development: the companies have been cooperating in this area together since 2015.

Recently, the head of BMW's hydrogen technology, Jürgen Guldner, said that by 2025 the cost of hydrogen-powered cars will drop to the level of gasoline-powered cars. This will be achieved, among other things, by reducing the amount of very expensive platinum used as a catalyst for a chemical reaction.
