Auto.ru analysts have studied the data of registrations of new passenger cars for January 2020. During this month, 104.9 thousand cars were registered with the traffic police, which is 11.1% more (plus 10.5 thousand units) than last year's result. This figure is noticeably higher than the dynamics according to the Association of European Businesses - plus 1.8%.

“In January, sales of new cars exceeded 100 thousand units, which came as a surprise to many market participants. Unlike last year, when prices for all cars increased due to the VAT increase from January 1, the increase in the scrappage fee will have an impact on cars produced only in 2020. Therefore, in January, many buyers had the opportunity to purchase a car at the old prices. Also, probably, a significant part of the cars contracted in December were registered already this year,”said Alexei Mukhanov, a leading analyst at Avto.ru.

Subcompact cars (A-class)

Image

The popularity of subcompact cars almost doubled: only 150 cars in the segment were registered, minus 43.4%. This is the largest drop in any passenger car segment on the market.

If at the end of 2019 the segment was supported by the demand for Smart Fortwo minicars, whose sales for 7 months out of 12 showed three-digit growth, then in January and behind it a long minus was recorded. Further growth is not expected, as the company switched to fully electric versions of Smart, which are not planned to be supplied to the Russian market. Now dealers are selling off leftovers.

Another reason for the fall in demand is high prices and the lack of localized production. For the price of KiPicanto in Russia, you can purchase a more practical KiRio or one of its competitors, and for the price of Smart there is a choice even among golf-class cars.

Compact cars (B, B + -class)

In one of the most popular segments, significant growth was noted: plus 8.5% and 41.7 thousand cars. However, the market share of compact models declined by 0.9 points to 39.8%.

The market bestseller LadGrant added quite modestly, but now the sales statistics are more objective than last year: in January 2019, almost all current model modifications were available on the market.

LadVesta, which was almost a quarter ahead of its closest competitor, went up after a four-month drop in 2019. About half of the sales are for the station wagon, including its cross-version.

The third place and the best dynamics among the sold models of the segment belongs to KiRio. The top three segment leaders account for 56% of sales.

The demand for soplatform models with the Datsun Grant increased by 14.3% (a total of 1.5 thousand units). It is worth noting a good start to the year for the Ravon brand: a total of three brand models have registered almost 100 owners. However, by the summer of 2020, Ravon will again leave the Russian market, giving way to similar models, but under the Chevrolet brand.

Among popular cars, only two models are losing demand: LadLargus and Xray.

Medium cars (C-class)

Despite the market growth in January, sales of golf-class cars sagged again: 4.4 thousand cars were registered, which is 14.2% less than in January 2019. The segment's share decreased to 4.2% (minus 1.2 points).

Despite this, only two models from the top 10 went into the red: the Toyot Corolla, which received a light update (the cars arrived at dealerships in March), and the Mazd3, whose sales were falling throughout 2019.

In the first half of 2020, the C segment performance will be significantly influenced by the departure of Ford passenger cars from the Russian market. A year ago, more than half a thousand new Ford Focus were registered with the traffic police, which occupied more than 10% of the segment. Also at the beginning of 2019, Nissan dealers were still selling the remnants of the budget Almera model, which was the fourth most popular car in the segment.

The growth in the class was marked by the models that were just awaiting renewal in January last year: Hyundai Elantra, Mercedes-Benz A-class and CLA-class. The Audi A3 sedan lured away some of the buyers of the BMW 1 Series, which had left the market, and sales of the updated KiCerato started at the end of 2018, and in January dealers still experienced some shortage of new items.

The popularity of the segment is influenced by the same high prices. For the same cost, the buyer can choose a compact or mid-size crossover, and with a small surcharge - a car of a higher class.

Large cars (D-class)

Image
Image

In January 2020, sales of D-class cars decreased by 2.6%: just over five thousand cars were registered. The share decreased by 0.7 points to 4.8%.

In a pair of leaders - no changes: ToyotCamry and KiOptim occupy 65% of the segment. The Japanese sedan was chosen by almost twice as many buyers, but the Camry's dynamics turned out to be worse than that of the competitor.

The newcomer is in third place: Mazda6 overtook Hyundai Sonata, although at the end of 2019 the Korean sedan was confidently in the lead. The reason is the deferred demand for the Sonata: the new generation model has not yet been brought to Russia, but January sales have already subsided.

The record-breaking growth in the segment was Geely Emgrand, which made it to the top 10 for the first time. Volkswagen Passat has an anti-record among popular cars: minus 60%, 55 registered cars. The reason is the same as that of the Sonata - the expectation of an updated version of the model, which will appear only in the spring.

Business class (E-class)

Image
Image

The segment of business class cars has grown significantly - plus 20.4%, but in absolute terms the figures are not so impressive - only 1.3 thousand cars. The segment's share rose to 1.2% (plus 0.1 points).

The positive dynamics of the pair of leaders had a noticeable effect on the result of the segment as a whole: together they sold almost a quarter better than a year earlier. Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series now account for almost 70% of the segment.

The best growth is in the Audi A6. The dynamics is due to the minimum sales a year ago, when there were no “non-tax” versions of the sedan on the market: they appeared only in the second half of 2019. Nevertheless, 104 registered cars are still far from the competitors from the “German troika”.

For a place in the top 10 during the year, the Volvo S90 can compete, which periodically got into the rating in 2019, but in January it was only on the 11th line with a result of 15 cars (plus 7.1%).

Luxury cars (F-class)

Image
Image

The segment of premium and luxury cars decreased by 9.4% to 193 cars. The main demand in the segment is for German brands, as well as for the budget-class KiK900 sedan, whose sales started in March 2019 - it even surpassed the Audi A8.

The outsiders are the Jaguar XJ, whose release was completed in 2019, and the date of the premiere of the new generation car has not yet been announced. Sales of Lexus LS also collapsed: the flagship sedan did not find buyers in Russia.

In January, 20 Bentley, 6 Lamborghini, 5 Maseratti and 8 Rolls-Royce were registered.

Sports coupes (S-class)

The sports coupe segment started the year with double-digit growth, plus 17% and 83 vehicles. The largest contribution to the positive dynamics was made by the updated Chevrolet Camaro in 2019. The sales of the Bentley Continental GT stagnated, which in 2019 was one of the record-breaking growth in popularity. The BMW 8 Series two-door has divided some buyers with the Gran Coupe 4-door sedan, which appeared at the end of 2019: this version was chosen by 6 people in January.

Crossovers and SUVs

Image

Crossovers and SUVs in January almost occupied half of the new car market: their share increased to 48.5% (plus 2.9 points). 50.8 thousand cars were registered in January - plus 18.2%.

The Hyundai Creta compact crossover retained the title of bestseller, the demand for which increased by almost a third. The new ToyotRAV4, which is 25 percent ahead of even the budget Renault Duster, is in second place with a significant lead over its competitors.

Good dynamics - Volkswagen Tiguan, Nissan X-Trail and SkodKodiaq: low base effect. At the beginning of last year, there was no diesel Tiguan on the Russian market, and sales of the updated X-Trail had just started - its production began in December 2018.The Czech Kodiaq in January 2019 has not yet reached the peak of popularity either.

In the top 30, demand decreased only for 7 models: Renault Duster, Lad4x4, UAZ Patriot (minus 4.4%, 763 units), Renault Kaptur (minus 18%, 1.5 thousand cars), ToyotLand Cruiser (minus 25.8 %, 400 units), Chevrolet Niv (minus 26%, 1.3 thousand) and - the strongest fall - Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (minus 33%, 512 cars). Suzuki Vitara has a record growth: 485 units, plus 230%.

The demand for crossovers and SUVs in the mass market segment increased by 14.4% to 40.7 thousand vehicles. Leaders and outsiders are the same as in the segment as a whole: Suzuki Vitar and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.

The popularity of crossovers of Chinese brands has doubled, to 3.1 thousand units. The main demand was for three models: Haval F7 (743 units, sold only from June-2019), Geely Atlas (566 units, plus 71.5%) and Haval H6 (495 units, plus 93.4%). Changan CS35 (289 units), Chery Tiggo 4 (259 units) and Geely Emgrand X7 (220 units) also showed good numbers. Almost run out at dealers Chery Tiggo 2 and Tiggo 5, Lifan Myway, X50 and X60, Zotye Coup and T600.

Sales of Japanese crossovers and SUVs increased by 17.6%: 16.2 thousand cars. Among 20 popular models, the strongest decline was observed in Lexus NX (189 units, minus 47.8%). In addition, sales of Lexus LX (196 units, minus 13.3%), ToyotFortuner (150 units, minus 45.3%) and MazdCX-9 (102 units, minus 8.1%) dropped.

A little more than 7 thousand premium crossovers and SUVs were registered - and this is 18.5% more than last year's result. Most of the leaders noted growth, and among the "record holders" - mainly cars, whose sales a year ago sank in anticipation of an update - for example, BMW X4 (309 units, plus 85%) and Mercedes-Benz GLE-class (236 units, plus 382%) - or a novelty on the Audi Q8 market (224 units, plus 141%).

Pickup trucks

Image
Image

The demand for pickups grew by a serious 13.9% for the segment: 778 vehicles were registered. The bestseller of the past year, a pickup truck from UAZ, rehabilitated itself after the December peak and came out in plus in January. A fairly close result was recorded for ToyotHilux - it is possible that a Japanese pickup truck will impose a struggle for leadership on UAZ throughout the year.

For Volkswagen Amarok, the growth in January is the first in 5 months, but the Mitsubishi L200 still sells better, although the demand for it is growing at a slower pace. But these numbers are good, because at the end of 2019, sales of these models decreased by 13.2 and 34.9%, respectively.
