Therefore, the design of the model was at best discreetly silent
However, the only thing KiSportage has been doing on the Russian market since 2016 is growth. In the first year of sales, it became the twentieth in the list of the best-selling cars in the country (19,003 cars sold), in 2017 - the nineteenth (24,611 units), in 2018 - the fourteenth (32,667 units), and in 2019 - twelfth (34,370 copies)! Despite the strange design and unbeatable ToyotRAV4. But is the Sportage still relevant or is it time for stable growth to give way to a quiet fade? Let's look at the example of a maximally packed car in the Premium configuration for 2,294,900 rubles.

Of all the leaders of the class, KiSportage is the oldest right now. VW Tiguan came out a year later, and the RAV4, even though it debuted two years ago, is quite fresh for the Russian market - and right now it is creating uniform indecency in the sales charts. And I must admit that in the cabin, both competitors are much more modern than the Sportage. At least due to the fact that you will not find such a button abundance in any of them.







Practicality
The Korean crossover is one of the most compact in its class. The Volkswagen Tiguan is a millimeter longer, and the RAV4 even surpasses it by as much as twenty centimeters! At the same time, the size of the wheelbase of the Sportage is almost the same as that of the opponents: only seven millimeters less than that of the Tiguan, and two centimeters shorter than that of Toyota. Moreover, the distance between the axles of the "Korean" is the same as that of the Mitsubishi Outlander, which is noticeably longer than the Sportage.







Technique and reliability
The age of the Sportage is also given by the aggregate base. If the current Tiguan and RAV4 moved to modern modular platforms, then the Korean crossover was made on the basis of the previous generation model. Yes, the stiffness of the body has grown almost one and a half times, the characteristics of the springs and shock absorbers have changed, the geometry of the suspension has changed, but there are still no radical differences from the third generation model.









Riding
In full measure, the ordinary Sportage manifests itself on the go. He sat down, drove from point "A" to point "B", left - and completely forgot how it was. What I ate, what I listened to the radio …
Acceleration in any of the control electronics modes is smooth and completely devoid of emotions. However, in absolute terms, everything is not bad - 9.6 seconds to a hundred (cars with 2.0 go two seconds slower). Simply put, you are unlikely to become a thunderstorm in the area, but you will not pull out your hair from a constant lack of traction.

And do not expect to provoke the Sportage with a "feisty" sport mode: the accelerator becomes just a little sharper, and the gearbox, without too much enthusiasm, allows the motor to spin almost to a cutoff. But once you release the gas pedal a little in the process, the gear still shifts up. So much for all the "sport".
However, I fully admit the thought that among the readers of this text there are those who do not like it when the gears are stuck with a bump, the box switches down at any opportunity, and always waits until the tachometer needle rests against the cutoff. People like this should like the Sportage's transmission settings: smooth, sedate, much more focused on fuel economy than dynamic driving - a torque converter classic!

In sports mode, by the way, the steering wheel is also a little heavier, trying to convince the driver that active driving is generally welcome here. But it is the electric booster settings that are the worst thing in the handling of the crossover. Everything is too artificial and implausible. But the chassis itself is right on top!
The smoothness of the ride, including on the top 19-inch wheels, is good: small things are filtered successfully, you can brake in front of the sunbeds without much zeal, and on sharp irregularities the Sportage does not lose face. However, he sometimes misses punches - just like almost any of the competitors. Therefore, gravel roads, asphalt laid directly on the ground and rough concrete should not cause problems.

It was a surprise that the "Korean" also drives well! There is a short rail (less than three revolutions from lock to lock), small rolls, and there is practically no boring front-wheel drive sliding onto the outer trajectory. Moreover, in winter it is quite possible to misbehave on the Sportage: under the gas at the exit from the corner, the Ki crossover actively works with the rear wheels, and does not fall out, like, for example, ToyotRAV4 with its cunning all-wheel drive with a pair of clutches at the rear.
And the stabilization system of the "Korean" is turned off almost completely: the electronics will intervene only when the driver, the car, or both at the same time run out of possibilities.

Frankly, you don't expect this kind of character from the average mid-size family crossover. In uncharacteristic conditions for such cars, the Sportage rides about the same as the Tiguan, but the "German" has a better steering wheel and more torque from below - thanks to the turbo engine. But the remaining 90 percent of classmates, including even the once gambling Subaru Forester, drive completely front-wheel drive and toothless.
In normal, day-to-day driving, the KiSportage is as clear and neutral as Switzerland. In other words, normal. There is a little lack of silence in the cabin: the external rumble penetrates inside quite noticeably, although there are no frank breakdowns in the Shumka.

Finally, all "jeep" Sportage is limited to a relatively problem-free exit from a snowdrift near the house and climbing the curbs. The overhangs are long, the ground clearance is slightly higher than that of golf-class cars, but the forced locking of the clutch makes life a little easier. For example, when you need to start off on an icy rise.
The clutch is quite hardy - you can slip in a snowdrift. There is an imitation of interwheel locks with the help of brakes, but it works with a delay, increasing the risk of burrowing, and in general requires decisive action from the driver. It is necessary to press on the gas immediately strongly - only in this way the electronics understands that it is time to get involved in work. On the same Tiguan, the imitations of locks are set up better.
Equipment
Sportage, traditionally for Kia, is offered only in fixed trim levels. But there are eight of them at once. The base one is called Classic. Such a car will cost 1,424,900 rubles - It will have steering wheel height and reach, remote central locking, air conditioning, driver's seat height adjustment, audio system with six speakers and Bluetooth, as well as 16-inch wheels. And it will be a car with a 150-horsepower engine, "mechanics" and front-wheel drive.








The most affordable Sportage with "automatic" costs 1,544,900 rubles… The package is called Classic "Warm Options", and it differs from the "base" by heated front seats, a windshield in the wipers rest area, and side mirrors - just imagine, in the initial version they do not heat up. A four-wheel drive car with the same equipment will cost 40,000 rubles more.
The next Comfort configuration (from 1,589,900 rubles) added dual-zone climate control, power adjustment of the driver's seat lumbar support, automatic front power windows, heated steering wheel and rear seats, rain sensor, cruise control and rear parking sensors.

Luxe version (from 1 679 900 rubles) has a light sensor, self-dimming salon mirror, multimedia with a seven-inch screen, a rear-view camera and roof rails. A slightly more pumped-up Luxe + (from 1,739,900 rubles) is not only equipped with fully diode headlights, keyless entry and eight-inch multimedia, but is also the starting point for the 2.4 engine (from 1 929 900 rubles).
In the complete set Prestige (from 1 944 900 rubles for 2.0 and from 2 054 900 rubles for 2.4) becomes very expensive and rich: leather seats, LED lights and foglights, an electronic handbrake with Autohold function and parking sensors in a circle. The top Premium is only available with a 2.4 engine and costs 2 294 900 rubles… Its key features are: adaptive crisis control, LED interior suspension, a rich set of safety systems, 19-inch wheels and a panoramic roof.
There is also a "sporty" modification of the GT Line with a special interior and exterior trim. She is standing 2 164 900 rubles and in terms of equipment it is somewhere between Prestige and Premium.

The whole week that I drove this car, I did not leave this feeling: the Koreans made a Sportage, looked at it, rode and were stunned by how ordinary it turned out. Nothing sticks out anywhere, does not hurt the eye. Even a little scary … So they sat down, thought and drew a very extravagant appearance for the crossover.

And here they were also right! The first wave of discussions on this matter quickly subsided, the second did not begin, and the popularity of Sportage only suggests that while everyone is chasing dynamics, handling and manufacturability, people need ordinary cars. After all, there is actually nothing wrong with ordinary cars.
