Mercedes-Benz has presented updated commercial vans and minibuses of the Vito family, which have significantly changed in terms of units and equipment. But what will we get from this "pie" of modernization and when can we expect a novelty in Russia?

The third generation Mercedes-Benz Vito has been produced in Spain since 2014 and has already sold over 530,000 units. The disposition by body types has not changed after the update: “just” Vito is an all-metal van with a carrying capacity of up to 1369 kg, a half-glass Vito Mixto is a cargo-passenger “brigade” version, and a car with a Tourer attachment is a purely passenger minibus that can accommodate up to 9 people.

The choice will still be given three options for body lengths, two wheelbases and three types of drive - front, rear or full. The floor of the cargo compartment can be metal, covered with plywood, or with a lightweight polymer coating.

External changes are purely cosmetic: a new radiator grille (black or chrome) with three lamellas, other wheels of 17, 18 or 19 inches and new colors in the palette - gray, red and blue. Basic headlights - halogens, in the list of options - fully LED lighting technology with automatic high-beam control and cornering lights.

The list of options includes a media system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and a navigator. But one of the main "chips" of the updated Vito is the salon mirror used for the first time on this model, which can also work as a monitor, showing the view from a digital wide-angle camera at the stern. It is very convenient if the backward view is blocked by cargo or passengers, not to mention a cargo van.

The main changes are hidden under the hood. The rear- and all-wheel drive versions instead of the 2.1-liter OM 651 diesel received a more economical and quieter 2-liter aluminum turbodiesel OM 654, already known from Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. This engine will be offered in 5 boost options: 110 CDI (102 HP and 270 Nm), 114 CDI (136 HP and 330 Nm), 116 CDI (163 HP and 380 Nm) or 119 CDI on 190 h.p. and 440 Nm and the most powerful 124 CDI, which develops 239 hp. and 500 Nm of torque (during acceleration, it can briefly increase to 530 Nm). It is only available on the passenger Vito Tourer and Vito Mixto combi. This Vito 124 CDI accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in passenger cars in 7.9 seconds, and its top speed reaches 210 km / h. All engines are Euro-6 with particulate filters and SCR urea exhaust neutralization.

In addition, for the first time on rear- and all-wheel drive versions, the new diesel will be combined with an optional 9-speed hydromechanical automatic instead of a 7-speed one. The basic front-wheel drive Vito is much more modest: it has a 1.6-liter OM 622 diesel engine with 102 or 136 hp. in conjunction with a 6-speed manual transmission.

And for the first time, the Vito family received a new AirMatic air suspension with adaptive and adjustable shock absorbers (from October, the luxury passenger V-Class will also get it). At speeds up to 30 km / h, the air suspension allows you to "stand up" by 35 mm, after 110 km / h the car, on the contrary, "squats" for the sake of saving fuel by 10 mm, and in the "sport" mode, the suspension, regardless of speed, constantly keeps low 10 mm clearance.

The list of equipment after restyling was also supplemented by adaptive cruise control and a new emergency braking system in the event of a collision with a car or pedestrian driving in front. The list of options includes tire pressure monitoring, parking assistant, lane keeping system and blind spot monitoring.

In Germany, orders for the updated Mercedes-Benz Vito will begin to be accepted from March 16 at a price of 22,598 euros per van. But in Russia?

Russian dealers will have a novelty in the summer of 2020, but they promise to open prices and take orders earlier. But the Vito will not have a new 2-liter diesel engine, a 9-speed automatic, or "pneuma" for Russia. And it's not just that it's expensive.For example, the OM 654 diesel is certified according to the new WLTP driving cycle, which Russia has not yet ratified, and the 9-speed automatic is “tied” to this engine. We will not see a purely electric front-wheel drive 203-horsepower eTourer with a 90 kW / h battery and a power reserve of up to 421 km (maximum speed - up to 160 km / h), although in Germany it will go on sale in the summer.

In Russia, the updated Vito will keep the current diesel engines. For the front-wheel drive - a 1.6 liter engine for 88 or 114 "forces", for the rear or full - a 2.1 liter unit with a capacity of 136, 163 or 190 hp. All engines are Euro-6 with urea, in conjunction with a basic 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-band automatic. Prices for the previous "Vito" now start at 2,099,000 rubles, but taking into account the collapse of the ruble and new rates of waste collection, one can only guess how much the imported novelty will rise in price.
