I'm lucky. After all, I went with the Jaguar F-Type all his life, from the first acquaintance with the roadster in 2013 to dashing sideways driving on the mighty SVRs, bristling with hundreds of battle spikes, at the Swedish driving school Jaguar Experience. I burned tires on a 550-horsepower "Erk" in northern Spain, drew black circles on a rear-wheel drive coupe at Portuguese interchanges, accelerated to 280 kilometers per hour on the back straight of the Motorland Aragon, and then was sad after the first trip in a coupe with a bland and boring two-liter turbo engine

I also remember asking one of the engineers on the SVR project about the strange dent in the titanium exhaust system, proudly displayed on a separate booth. And in response, I heard an incredible story about how one of the British specialists spent two years of his life creating a unique voice for the fastest car in the history of Jaguar. And also that this dent is exactly where it should be, and if you move it a millimeter to the side, you get not a voice, but it is not clear what.

And I remember exactly how, over and over again, I admired the ability of Jaguar engineers and marketers to grope for that fine line that separates shocking from kitsch, and to produce cars that fall in love with you from the very first seconds. But now I look at the bright yellow Jaguar F-Type R, which has been seriously updated for the first time in these years, and I do not understand: am I old, or is it not the same?

And now it's not even about design: whether you like the new slanting F-type face with a huge radiator grill or not is a matter of taste. For example, not very much for me - there was something in the pre-styling family that made it special. And now the F-Type has more of a Jaguar, but noticeably less uniqueness. Changes in the interior are generally purely evolutionary: fresh multimedia Touch Pro with updates "over the air" (but with the same matte screen, completely "fading" in the sun), and digital tidy with a 12-inch display and elegant graphics, which replaced the traditional analog scales in deep wells. But this is not what causes melancholy …

Before, after all, the way it was: you start the F-Type in the parking lot anywhere - near your home, office or just in the middle of the street - and you think, "Oh, damn it, how cool is that!" Because this Jaguar always woke up angry - hoarse, rude and very loud. So loud that sometimes it was even a little embarrassing. Well, just a little bit: when it's 7 am and everyone seems to be asleep.

And now? And now the 575-horsepower F-Type R - the most formidable version of the British coupe to date - wakes up casually and lazily, like a drunken valerian cat. Yes, a special "quiet" start mode was added to the new "erke" - just so as not to wake up children and neighbors in the morning. But then I press the button that opens the exhaust flaps, and prepare for the sonic attack, and in response … almost nothing changes. Not believing my ears, I do it again, and again. I ask my colleague to get into the car and press the gas a couple of times heartily, but there is no sound. No, and that's it.

So the very first question posed to the developers of the new F-Type R at the presentation was simple: “Why? Why did you leave the Jaguar without a voice? " And they all dumped damn environmental standards on Greta Thunberg. Yes, the tougher European requirements for the exhaust of gasoline cars every year forced engineers to add a particulate filter to the exhaust system, which killed all the charisma of the F-type.

Chick - and you're done.

To be fair, I will say that the F-Type R, of course, did not begin to sound like the Solaris from carsharing. If only because the voice of a V8 with a mechanical compressor cannot be completely silenced by any filters. But the former roar and shots during the gas release, which so pleased the former F-type, no longer exist. Not in place, not in motion.

Under open gas - when the five-liter 575-horsepower engine begins to breathe at full strength - in the voice of the F-Type R, no, no, yes, a familiar roar will slip through, and as the exhaust system warms up, something similar to shooting appears. But, unfortunately, this sound does not stand up to any comparison with the previous apocalyptic sound.

If, finally, distract from the audiovisual effects and focus on the essence, the new F-Type R is … better! His chassis was thoroughly shaken up - in fact, they took parts from the SVR version, such as a stiffer rear subframe, thicker stabilizers and new firmware for adaptive shock absorbers, and put them on wider (+10 millimeters) tires. And now the British coupe is going impressively fast.

If earlier powerful F-types seemed rude in their habits, now there is a little less insolence, and much more efficiency. Yes, the R version is equipped with an uncontested all-wheel drive, but with a clear emphasis on the rear axle. Plus an active rear differential, which, under traction, pleasantly twists the car into the corner. Frankly placing your tail on a narrow serpentine will not work (too fast and scary!), But the pace of passing difficult junctions has definitely increased now.

The only pity is that the engineers did not manage to completely untie the steering wheel from the background effort - I want it a little cleaner. For example, as on the basic two-liter roadster.

An interesting thing - when I first rode a two-liter F-type a few years ago, I experienced nothing but disappointment. Not too fast, not very loud, not very interesting. But now several years have passed, and the roofless 300-horsepower F-Type suddenly seems surprisingly alive, spontaneous and … more exciting than the mighty "Erka"!

The steering wheel is more transparent, the difference in weight in favor of the roadster is felt from the very first turns, and the two-liter engine - which is a surprise - is quite good! There is enough traction at the exit from the corners always and everywhere, and it sounds nice. Low, loud - not at all like the highly accelerated German "turbo fours" of recent years.

And the funny thing is that nothing has changed in the two-liter F-types except for the design and interior. The chassis, engine and gearbox settings are the same. And amazingly fun!

And if a couple of years ago, when asked which Jaguar F-Type is the best in the lineup, I would have answered without hesitation “Of course, R, or even better SVR”, now everything is not so obvious. In other markets, the updated family will have a version with a derated up to 450 horsepower V8 engine and an honest rear-wheel drive, and two-liter cars and versions with a basic V6 can be ordered with an honest manual transmission. But we have - only "automatic machines", only 2.0 for 300 forces, V6 for 380 hp. or the top-end F-Type R with a 575-horsepower engine and four-wheel drive. And all this with a price of 5.7 million rubles for the basic coupe to 9.8 million for the top one.

Justifying the choice of the "erka" for 10 million by the fact that none of the competitors offers such a vivid combination of style / power / wildness and emotions, it will no longer work. And the two-liter car - in any of the body options - now seems more interesting, more honest and closer to the classic British sports coupe than ever. As for the prices … Aren't you used to it yet?
