A large, roomy, practical crossover under the Skod brand was originally supposed to become the messiah of the Russian market. But with popular love, Kodiak had to wait about a year - until localized cars descended from the Nizhny Novgorod conveyor, which at once fell in price by more than 300 thousand rubles relative to foreign ones

This happened back in the early fall of 2018, and since then, prices have grown considerably, which is not surprising against the background of VAT increases, waste collection fees and other things. As a result, the Russian-assembled Kodiak costs about the same today as the imported one a year and a half ago! But the deed is done: last year the Czech crossover confidently finished in the top 25 domestic sales, and last January it ascended to 14th place with a result in 1981. Imagine, another 60 cars - and this big man in general would become the most popular Skod model in Russia, overtaking the cheap Rapid. But both Octavia and a huge number of serious competitors are already behind - and this seems to be a real success.

But a normally equipped Kodiaq costs a lot: from two million rubles! And if we consider the market leaders, keeping the price in mind, it turns out the following: among the expensive but popular cars, Kodiak lost only to the Toyota RAV4 (this sect is too strong), and its relative Volkswagen Tiguan is more compact and slightly more affordable.

And the most surprising thing is that expensive versions are the most popular of all. Like the one we have on the test - with a two-liter diesel engine, four-wheel drive and in the richest set of Style. Prices start from 2,262,000 rubles, and the share of sales of such Kodiacs is about 15 percent. A similarly equipped crossover with a 180-horsepower gasoline engine has the same amount, but the third bestseller works in contrast: this is a front-wheel drive "base" with a 150-horsepower 1.4 TSI, but still with a DSG "robot", because our "mechanics" the client does not like it at all. And now, having finished with the formalities, it's time to figure out: is Kodiaq as good as people buy it.

Interior

Dark sensory times are already coming for the interiors of Volkswagen AG cars, and in this context, the Kodiaq will seem like a fragment of the fertile old world, when everything was good and right. But right now - it's just another Skoda, assembled from all-Volkswagen parts and flavored with Czech caring ingenuity. Riding

If you have driven one MQB crossover, consider that you have driven all of them.The difference will be at the level of nuances, and even two versions of the same model often differ more from each other than two models from different brands! This is especially true of how well the engine and transmission get along.

While colleagues on the Tiguan 2.0 TSI were looking for the optimal combination of control algorithms, my diesel Kodiaq allowed you to just drive and enjoy: everything is in "standard", the box is in "sport" - and grace. It's not that the solid 340 Newton-meter thrust required keeping the gear down all the time - that's just unnecessary. But the fact that the DSG doesn't have to waste time on unnecessary shifts improves the overall picture a lot. And even in a traffic jam, business goes without jerks and nervousness.

In other modes, the high-torque diesel engine is also more confident and more impressive than the gasoline engine, but this does not affect the absolute dynamics: the five-seat 150-horsepower Kodiak spends exactly 10 seconds on acceleration to hundreds, and the seven-seat versions turn out to be a couple of tenths slower. Moreover, the TDI, contrary to logic, loses 0.1 seconds more than the TSI.

And here's another riddle: there are two crossovers - one more family-owned, the other younger. For one, the stabilization system is turned off only after long wanderings in the wilds of the menu, and even then not completely, while for the other - entirely and from the button. Guess which one?

That's right, the drift mobile suddenly turned out to be a Kodiaq, not a Tiguan! We turn the steering wheel, release the throttle, wait for the car to "set up", pick it up with the accelerator - and write a long, beautiful arc. A typical family trip to the mall, uh-huh.

Of course, adrenaline is not overflowing here, and yet there is more excitement in the family Skoda than one might expect. But accidentally skidding on the Kodiak will not work: if you "get on the gas" too early (or just drown it on the floor and hold it), you will simply drive outside the turn. Boring, predictable and safe, as befits a machine like this.

And one more purely fashionable difference between Kodiak and Tiguan: Skod offers the only off-road mode of control electronics, which is activated by the Off Road button on the central tunnel, while Volkswagen allows this “off-road” to be customized. In any case, it all comes down to different algorithms for the engine, gearbox and ESP, and ultimately is limited to modest suspension travel and the absence of physical blockages.

Their imitation through biting the brakes helps to get under way on slippery surfaces or climb a rather steep hill, but no more. For example, from hanging in the photos above, the Kodiaq could only go back, and in an attempt to move further, he simply skidded a hole with his front left wheel.

But if you do not engage in nonsense, and use the family (and primarily urban) crossover for its intended purpose, SkodKodiaq will not give serious reasons for criticism. Because its only drawback is a stiff short-travel suspension, and this argument would be strong in our country of bad roads … But Russia is massively buying up Volkswagen Polo and Tiguan, KiSportage, Nissan Qashqai, SkodRapid and so on, so driving comfort has not been determined for a long time rules of the game. Moreover, the Kodiak rides denser, but at the same time more collected than Tiguan - and in certain conditions, like jointed roads, such settings are felt even more noble.

Controllability? Well, it's like a modern, well-maintained elevator: you tell Skoda where you want to go, and it goes there. Dry, dispassionate, reliable - and not paying attention to how many people packed into the cabin. Another quality that a good car and a good lift have in common: they do not make unwanted sounds. Therefore, with noise isolation at Kodiak, everything is also in perfect order.

As is customary for the "Germans" (even if we are talking about a Czech car of Russian production), the list of SkodKodiaq options is twice as long as the table, which indicates the standard equipment of the three available trim levels.The basic Active version is offered only for the 1.4 TSI engine - depending on the transmission and drive type, we are talking about prices from 1,459,000 to 1,829,000 rubles.

The surcharge for the next configuration, Ambition, will be the less, the more you spend on hardware: for the 125-horsepower front-wheel drive Kodiak on the “mechanics” it is almost 269 thousand rubles, and for the 150-horsepower version on DSG and with four drivers - only 127 thousand. In addition to what is included in the aforementioned "active" equipment packages, there will be roof rails, nets and clips in the trunk, an emergency braking system, a rear armrest, a mirror with auto-dimming, a more advanced media system and discs of the same 17th diameter, but different design.

Finally, the Style version, like ours, will require a surcharge from 199 to 99 thousand rubles - again depending on the engine, gearbox and the number of drivers. The driver's seat will have electric drives, the upholstery will become combined, garlands of background lighting will stretch through the cabin, the doors can be unlocked without taking the key out of the pocket, the wheels will increase by an inch, and the headlights will become LED and get a washer. The maximum price you can pay for a Kodiaq without additional options is 2,328,000 rubles.

This is a crossover with a solid genealogy, almost impeccable ergonomics, a bunch of pleasant and useful notions, an absent (read - optimal) driving character, and at the same time gives you the illusion of choice. Every few thousand in the configurator is a conscious decision of the client, even if it was predicted in advance by marketers.

But will the more spacious, practical and rational Kodiak become more popular than Tiguan? Well, for comparison, the first generation Rapid in Russia did not overshadow the Polo.
