Remember February 2020! In just one month, several contenders for market domination appeared in the country at once. The renewed Hyundai Solaris, the long-awaited KiSeltos … With the first, everything is clear: the icon of economy-class and car-sharing taxis, the eternal contender for the title of the most popular foreign car in the country. And Seltos is such a coveted and relatively affordable all-wheel drive from Kia! And the Koreans would now have a feast for the whole world, celebrating the inevitable success, but SkodKaroq kicked the door to this party. And, it seems, he intends to ruin the holiday for everyone

Karoq reached Russia with a great delay. The crossover was introduced back in 2017, as the ideological successor to the Yeti. Why did they take him to us for so long? It was necessary to establish production in Nizhny Novgorod, to adapt the model to Russian roads, reagents and temperatures. Yes, and the Yeti for some time after Karok's debut was selling well … Or maybe the Czechs were waiting for Seltos to make a big mess?

In dry and impartial numbers, we have already compared the Korean and Czech crossovers. Let me just remind you that Karoq is slightly larger than Seltos. And the Skoda's trunk is slightly larger. But much, much cooler.

Just look at the photo of Seltos' trunk (it is the first in the leaflet below). Now to the photo of Karok's trunk. Once again on Seltos, and then again on Karoq. Who is for Skoda ?! I am exactly. There is a pair of hooks for bags on a special rail, a 12-volt outlet, and clips for the net, and a pair of straps, and side pockets with removable walls, and a niche on the right, and levers for folding the second row - the Korean has nothing like this. And given that Karok's trunk itself is larger (by 32 liters), it turns out almost a game with only one goal.

Plus, the Karoq is much more suited for transporting long vehicles, because there is a hatch in the back of the rear seats. In Europe, a three-section rear sofa VarioFlex is also offered for the crossover, which can be moved, folded and even removed from the car in parts or completely. We do not have such luxury in the list of options yet, but by the standards of the class, even a hatch to the salon is already a luxury.

And now for a couple of unpleasant moments. First, there is a huge threshold in the trunk. It is tall and wide: it will not be easy to throw something bulky and heavy over it. Secondly, a giant step at the junction of the trunk and the passenger compartment with the backrests folded. Both could be avoided with a two-level floor, like Tiguan's, but for Karok it is not available.

Skoda and Tiguanovskaya do not have a separate climate zone for second-row passengers, there are no folding tables in the backs of the front seats. Of course, you can also complain about this, but why? After all, the space reserve is excellent in all vital parameters, and only the central passenger, if desired, will be able to play because of the high central tunnel.

And here's another fact: in the Octavia, the back will be slightly more spacious, especially in the legs, but the difference is not at all dramatic. Moreover, it is more than compensated by the height of the ceiling: there is noticeably more air overhead in Karok.

In terms of equipment for rear passengers, there is parity between Octavia and Karok. By default, the crossover has a pair of deflectors and a folding armrest. There may also be heaters and a power unit with a USB Type-C port, a 12-volt outlet and a regular 230-volt outlet, but this is at an additional cost.

Yes, the plastic in the front is soft! Based on the finishing materials, SkodKaroq transfers KiSeltos to the ground and takes on painful. The entire front panel, along with the center console, is sheathed with pliable, like fresh tiramisu, plastic. Hard material is only at the bottom and, alas, on the door cards. However, on the armrests of the doors, it was covered with soft inserts.

The architecture of the center console is minimally different from the older Kodiak. Unless the ventilation deflectors are smaller and of a different shape.Below is a block of infrequently used keys, such as enabling Start / Stop and activating the car park. Directly above it is a single for all Skoda climate control unit with small screens that show the temperature, and on top is the screen of the multimedia system. And there are questions for her.

At the start of sales for the crossover, only basic multimedia with a 6.5-inch screen and no navigation will be available. Its interface looks like iOS 13 was pulled on an old PDA: everything seems to be as it should, but somehow … chewed. In this discipline, Seltos is clearly cooler - at least until Karoka is given a lift to a more sophisticated entertainment complex, which is even put on Octavia. But even then it will be necessary to see how much money will be asked for it.

But I have no more complaints about the Skoda salon. The geometry of the landing behind the wheel is excellent, the seats are comfortable, albeit completely mechanically adjustable, the steering wheel is adjustable in two planes, the armrest changes position in height and length, the tidy is easy to read, and the visibility is a solid four. The A-pillars are wide, but the side mirrors are so huge that they don't even need to be adjusted after another driver.

True, it is the mirrors that are at the same time the main irritant on the go: they make noise. At city speeds, there are no problems, but on the highways the accompaniment is already noticeable, even too much. And the engine is audible, but only at revs above average. There are no questions about the soundproofing of Karok's wheel arches.

And in general, clinging to what Karok is on the go is a useless and ungrateful business. Like all modern models of the Volkswagen concern, the crossover is based on the modular MQB platform. I don’t know what kind of magic the Germans are casting into this cart, but there have been no misfires yet: all the cars built on it drive great. Even with a semi-independent rear suspension, which is installed on front-wheel drive versions, there are no other Karoks in Russia yet.

Firstly, the smoothness of the ride is pleasing. The crossover does not itch on small things, it pleasantly and resiliently drives through large irregularities like speed bumps, although in the Netherlands they are much more tolerant than Russian ones, which means that you traditionally have to wait with the final verdict. But on the local roads, several thermal seams and asphalt patches were found, on which Karok did not lose face - and this instills a certain optimism.

A noticeable nuisance happened only once, when I completely lost my nerve and drove through a concrete hump, which is a cross between a speed bump and a pedestrian crossing, at 60–70 kilometers per hour. Not that without slowing down, but even accelerating a little. Then, as expected, it blurted out at the retreat.

Controllability? It is important not to overdo it with expectations. Here, they say, Golf is made on the same MQB - and rulitsya beautifully. Yes, but the Golf is smaller, lighter and has a lower center of mass. And Karoq is controlled in such a way that no objective claims can be made against it, and everything else is taste.

The steering effort is comfortable, there is enough feedback - although not enough to feel the brand of asphalt by touch. And is it really necessary? Steering balance - neutral safe. Karok does not slip from the intended trajectory in the turn, he keeps a straight line. By God, what more could you want from a not very expensive and not at all "hot" crossover?

SkodKaroq currently has no engine range as such: the SUV is offered only with a turbocharged petrol 1.4 TSI with 150 hp, which is combined - you just sit down - with the usual eight-speed "automatic" Aisin! No "robots". At least for now.

The duet of the engine and transmission pleases, but does not overwhelm. At the bottom, there is a slight lack of traction, but after one and a half thousand, all 250 Nm will be at your service, and then Karok accelerates very briskly. Without the backs of their heads in the headrests, but enough to put on a semblance of a smile on the face of the average father of the family. And 8.8 seconds to a hundred cannot but rejoice.

And "automatic" is generally a song, not a gearbox. If there is a difference in the rate of fire with respect to the DSG, then it is barely perceptible, and the smoothness of switching is … well, not an order of magnitude better, but it is almost impossible to notice a gear change even in a ragged rhythm, which sometimes throws robots out of balance.

However, there will still be DSG. The six-speed "robot" DQ250 with a pair of wet clutches will be installed on cars with a 1.4 turbo engine and all-wheel drive based on a multi-plate clutch. These cars will start selling in the summer. At the same time, a naturally aspirated 1.6 engine with 110 forces will be added, which is well known from Polo, Octavia and Rapid. It will traditionally be offered in tandem with either a five-speed "mechanics" or a six-speed "automatic".

And when Karok's motor range is finally formed, and the basic Active modification also appears, then the meat grinder between the new Skoda and Seltos will spin to its fullest. After all, he is also waiting for a 1.6 engine with a traditional "automatic".

Now the "basic" Karoq is a car in the middle configuration Ambition, and it costs 1,499,000 rubles without options. The equipment can not be called drum: there is a salon mirror with automatic dimming, four airbags, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, rear parking sensors, rain and light sensors, fog lights, multimedia and 16-inch wheels.

KiSeltos for similar money will also be front-wheel drive, but with a two-liter aspirated engine for 149 forces and a CVT. However, the equipment of such a car will be slightly richer. So, the Korean crossover for a little over one and a half million rubles will also be equipped with a heated steering wheel, rear seats and windshield, diode headlights, 17-inch wheels and a huge multimedia with a 10.25-inch screen.

Karoq says: first test of the new Skod crossover for Russia

The top-end Karoq in the Style version (these are the cars that were tested) will cost 1,673,000 rubles without additional equipment. This option differs from the "base" in the combined trim of the seats, contoured interior lighting with 10 colors, heated steering wheel, keyless entry, parking sensors in a circle, a color screen of the onboard computer and 17-inch wheels.

And Seltos for that kind of money … doesn't exist. Either two liters, a variator and four-wheel drive for 1.6 million rubles, or a turbo, 177 forces, a "robot" and the same four-wheel drive for almost 1.8 million. That is, with all the variety of trim levels, the Koreans left a gap of 200 thousand rubles - and it is there that, probably, Karoq will be especially strong.

Here you can say: “Why are you comparing these versions for the rich ?! The simplest KiSeltos on the machine costs 1,139,900 rubles, but how much will the Skoda cost? " It would be worth waiting for the official announcement of prices for all modifications, but if the price list for Karok is formed according to the same principles as for the Octavia, then we can assume the following: a crossover with a 1.6 engine and "automatic" in the simplest configuration will cost about 1,350 000 rubles, but the basic car will be plus or minus 100 000 rubles cheaper.

Simply put, Karok probably won't have the same attractive advertising price as KiSeltos. On the other hand, the base Octavia is about 80,000 rubles more expensive than the base KiCeed, but this does not prevent it from being the only representative of the golf class in the top 25 best-selling cars in Russia.

Therefore, I would not rule out a scenario in which a large and comfortable trunk, high-quality finishing materials and all sorts of purely Skoda chips will lead the Czech crossover to the winners of this duel. And in the same way, one cannot help but think that the striking design, many already available complete sets and cool multimedia can turn the situation upside down. In any case, it will be a glorious hunt.
