At the end of 2019, the share of new cars with diesel engines in the European Union decreased to 30.5% (minus 5.4 points). According to the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA), 4.651 million heavy fuel vehicles were registered in 12 months (minus 13.9%).

  • Among the major markets, the increase in demand for diesel vehicles was recorded only in Germany: plus 3.7%, 1.153 million units. In addition, the growth for the year was in Latvia (2.2%, 6.8 thousand cars) and Lithuania (4.3%, 8.2 thousand).
  • France sank less than other large markets (minus 10.6%, 755.6 thousand cars). In the UK and Italy - a drop of 21.8% (583.5 thousand units) and 22.1% (762.9 thousand), respectively.
  • Anti-records were set in Spain (25.9%, 350.8 thousand), Portugal (26.5%, 89.4 thousand) and Finland (27.3%, 20.9 thousand). The strongest decline in demand for "diesel" in the Netherlands - by 42.4% (32.8 thousand).

The share of new cars with gasoline engines in Europe reached 58.9%: 8.964 million units, up 5.2%. Over the year, their number increased by 2.3%. Another 10.6% falls on the share of cars with alternative engines (hybrids, electric cars, etc.), and their number increased by 42.9% over the year - to 1.612 million units.
