Video: How New Cars Were Actually Sold In Russia In
Auto.ru analysts have studied the data of registrations of new passenger cars in 2019. For 12 months in the traffic police 1 million 593 thousand cars were registered, which is 2.5% less (minus 41.1 thousand pieces) than in 2018.
“At the end of 2019, the real fleet of new passenger cars in Russia decreased by 2.5%. If at the beginning of 2019 the majority of market participants were optimistic, the expectations for 2020 are exactly the opposite. However, the news of an increase in the scrappage fee has revived the situation, and some dealers are talking about unexpectedly high demand in January: by all appearances, buyers are eager to buy 2019 cars at the old prices. In addition, the rate cut spurred car loans, and the number of loans issued actually returned to pre-crisis levels. Banks began to develop products for used cars. The programs "First Car" and "Family Car", extended for 2020, will be able to help the market, but the maximum price of a car purchased at a discount from the state has remained at the same level - 1 million rubles, which greatly limits the choice, "says a leading analyst at Auto.ru Alexey Mukhanov.
Subcompact cars (A-class)
The segment of the smallest cars in 2019 sank by 12% at once - 4.7 thousand cars were registered. Low demand for minicars is explained by the high price and low liquidity of such cars in the secondary market. For example, at the KiPicanto price, you can choose either the larger KiRio, or competing models from the same segment.
The segment was kept from a catastrophic decline only by the demand for Smart Fortwo: 7 months out of 12 this model showed three-digit growth. The reason is the cessation of production of Smart with internal combustion engines and the sale of the remaining cars to car-sharing companies.
Compact cars (B, B + -class)
The demand for cars from one of the two most popular segments in Russia fell along with the market: minus 2.5% (636.6 thousand cars). The segment's share remained at the level of 40%.
The absolute bestseller of the year - the LadGrant family - ended 2019 with strong growth, but this dynamic is not entirely objective. Since the fall of 2018, the lineup of the Grant family has been merged with Kalina, which formally increased the sales of the model. If we compare the results of Grants in 2019 with the total result of Grants and Kalina, then the increase will be less - 12.5%.
The LadVest family remained in positive territory at the end of the year, even despite the 4 consecutive months of decline. Among competitors - Hyundai Solaris, KiRio, SkodRapid and Volkswagen Polo - only the Czech liftback did not fall into the red. Renault Logan also showed strong growth, which has gone up in plus since June.
The worst dynamics among popular models is in the Datsun mi-Do soplatform with Grant: minus 17.8% and 2.9 thousand cars. The on-Do sedan is doing better: 19.2 thousand cars, minus 8.4%.
Returning to the market, the Ravon brand in total found less than 200 buyers for three models in a year, which does not give the manufacturer hope for big sales in 2020. The stocks of Ford Fiesta, which is leaving Russia, apparently also came to an end: 1.1 thousand cars were registered in a year (minus 30.2%), and in December - only 7 units.
Medium cars (C-class)
Golf-class cars sank by 24.2% - to 82.2 thousand new cars. The segment's share fell to 5.2% (minus 1.5 points).
Due to the disastrous October (minus 15.8%) and December (minus 6.5%) for SkodOctavi, the segment's bestseller failed to end the year in positive territory. However, in absolute terms, the result is very good, and the model occupies 28% of sales in the segment.
Only KiCerato ended the year with confident growth (the only drop in demand was in October - minus 17.1%) and a pair of Mercedes-Benz - A- and CLA-classes. In addition to the high popularity of "fresh" versions, Mercedes lured away some of the potential buyers of the BMW 1 Series, which left the Russian market. In the last quarter of 2019, only 15 owners registered the "kopeck" (20 times less than a year ago), and for the year - 807 (minus 37%)
Sales results in this class were negatively affected by the withdrawal from the market of two mass models - Ford Focus and Nissan Almera. In 2018, they accounted for more than a quarter of the segment - 27.2 thousand cars.In addition, the demand for C-class models is falling due to prices: with a small surcharge, the client can buy a new car of a higher class or a compact crossover. On the other hand, they are pressed by the models of classes "B" and "B +", which are cheaper, but in terms of equipment and comfort they have come close to the cars of the "golf class".
Large cars (D-class)
Contrary to the general market trend, the popularity of segment D cars has grown: over 12 months, 90.7 thousand cars were registered, which is 3.5% more than a year earlier. The segment's share also added up to 5.7% (plus 0.3 points).
The key role here was played by the increased demand for the most massive models of the class: ToyotCamry and KiOptima. In total, two sedans account for almost 64% of the segment share! In addition, representatives of the premium German troika finished the year with a good plus: BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. Together they occupy another 12% of the class.
Outside the top 10, the Genesis G70 (1.1 thousand cars, plus 44.5%) and Geely Emgrand (0.7 thousand, plus 196%), which set a record growth in the segment, showed good dynamics.
Sales of premium car brands in this segment increased by 7.3% to 14 thousand units.
Business class (E-class)
The segment of business class cars also grew - by 1% (22.5 thousand cars). The segment's share remained at 1.4%.
As in the previous segment, the growth factor here was the high sales of the two leaders, which occupy a 67% share. Sales also increased for the Lexus ES, which was in the top 3 throughout the year, and also became the record holder among popular models. The Maserati Ghibli was marked by the absolute best dynamics - plus 114%, but this is only 15 registered sedans per year.
The Audi A6 sedan lost its audience more strongly than others, which until the autumn of last year was sold only with a "tax-unprofitable" engine with a capacity of 340 horsepower. The version with a 245 horsepower engine appeared at dealers only in August, but in 5 months it managed to find 600 owners - this is 65% of A6 sales in a year.
Luxury cars (F-class)
In the last 4 months of 2019, the segment of premium and luxury cars has been losing customers at a record pace - 20-30% each month. As a result, the segment dropped by 16.2% over the year: 4.3 thousand new cars were registered.
Only three models finished the year in positive territory. These are Ki and Genesis, as well as a purely niche Maserati Quattroporte (5 cars sold versus 3 in 2018). The popularity of the KiK900 is explained by the low price for the segment, and the huge growth - by the low base: the K900 replaced the Quoris sedan only at the beginning of the year.
As for the most expensive car brands on the Russian market, in 12 months the traffic police (including crossovers) registered 10 Aston Martin (minus 3 units), 1 Aurus Senat, 319 Bentley (plus 21 cars), 32 Ferrari (plus 2 sports cars), 142 Lamborghini (plus 72 cars), 6 McLaren (plus 5 cars) and 192 Rolls-Royce (plus 96 cars).
Sports (and not so) coupes (S-class)
The coupe segment ended the year with a 10% growth: 2.2 thousand registered vehicles.
Good sales were shown by new cars to the market, such as the BMW 8 Series and Z4, or restyled versions of popular models, including the new generation Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, Porsche 911 Carrera, Bentley Continental GT. Outside the top ten, positive dynamics were noted by the Dodge Challenger (not officially sold in the Russian Federation, but 27 cars were registered, plus 93%), Lamborghini Aventador (15 units, plus 50%) and a pair of Ferrari - Superfast (11 units, plus 83%) and Portofino (11 pieces, plus 120%).
However, most of the segment's representatives went into negative territory. Probably, affluent motorists preferred something more “everyday” to expensive coupes, like charged crossovers Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne.
Crossovers and SUVs
Crossovers and SUVs are the most popular vehicles on the Russian market. In 2019, the SUV segment kept last year's figures: plus 0.1%, 734.3 thousand vehicles. However, against the background of a general market decline, the segment's share increased by 1.2 points to 46.1%.
Hyundai Cret has retained the title of bestseller: sales of the model have grown noticeably, and the closest competitor, Renault Duster, is sold out almost twice worse than Cret. And his second place is under threat: the Volkswagen Tiguan in 2019 almost caught up with the cheaper French brand crossover.
Renault Kaptur has a noticeable drop among the leaders: part of the sales was taken over by the new Renault Arkana model. This crossover has already hit the top 25 most popular crossovers and has sold more than 10 thousand cars in six months.
SkodKodiaq has the best growth in the top 20. Chevrolet Niva has an anti-record: minus 23.5%, 21.7 thousand cars.
Representatives of mass-market crossovers sank by 4.2%: 567.3 thousand cars were registered in 12 months. Here, the departure of Ford's passenger car division from the market was noticeable - sales of crossovers and SUVs fell by more than two times, and in 2020 they will not remain at all in dealers' warehouses.
For Chinese brands, the year ended with an increase of 20%: 30.9 thousand cars were registered. The leaders are Geely Atlas and Haval H6: 6.8 thousand (plus 163%) and 6 thousand cars (plus 181%), respectively. Geely Emgrand X7 (1.6 thousand units, plus 344%), Haval H2 (1.2 thousand units, plus 235%) and Haval H9 (810 units, plus 93%) are selling well. Due to the end of car production in Russia, Lifan almost completely lost its market share in 2019.
The demand for Japanese crossovers and SUVs decreased by 2.7% over the year: 226.8 thousand cars were registered. Affected by the slowdown in sales of brands Lexus (19.8 thousand cars, minus 7.7%), Toyot (60.9 thousand, minus 4.8%) and Nissan (63.6 thousand, minus 2.2%). Mazd (24.3 thousand units, plus 4%) and Mitsubishi Motors (38.8 thousand units, plus 3%) saved the situation a little. Mitsubishi Pajero, leaving Russia, has the best growth at the end of the year: 1.2 thousand cars, plus 118%.
Premium crossovers and SUVs added 3.9%: 104.3 thousand cars per year. Audi and BMW ended 2019 with growth of 11.8% (9.6 thousand cars) and 19.4% (24.4 thousand), respectively. For both brands, new products - the flagship Audi Q8 and BMW X7 - served as a powerful impetus for sales. Mercedes-Benz kept sales at the last year's level: 20.7 thousand cars. The Volvo brand was marked by a record growth: plus 26.3% (7.4 thousand cars). The year was not very successful for British brands: minus 6% for Land Rover (8.7 thousand cars) and 17.3% for Jaguar (1.6 thousand).
In 2019, the demand for pickups fell by 7.1% - to 10.4 thousand cars.
At the end of the year, UAZ managed to retain its leadership, but the silver medalist of the rating - ToyotHilux - lagged slightly behind it, by 313 cars. It is possible that in 2020 the Japanese pickup will be able to take the first line.
The new Mitsubishi L200 proved to be noticeably less popular than the previous one, and throughout the year, monthly sales were one third worse than in 2018. The top three took over 81% of all new pickups in the country.
Dodge Ram, which is not officially sold in Russia, was marked by record dynamics: fans of the American pickup truck brought almost 150 cars. Isuzu D-max also showed good growth, probably taking away some of the potential buyers of Fiat Fullback, whose official sales in Europe ended in spring 2019.
Despite the declining interest in pickups, the Chinese automaker Jac has launched the T6 model on the Russian market. Since the start of sales in September, the pickup has been registered 28 times. Some of them are probably cars for dealerships.
