For what people go to Mitsubishi salons, it is clear: the relatively low price and the Japanese ancestry (despite the Russian assembly) are doing their job. But what remains outside of these reinforced concrete qualities: not the freshest crossover that miraculously does not spoil the furrows, or is it still a decent car that can give battle to young rivals? Understanding.

Salon
Time passes, and the Japanese are stubbornly persistent. The bet on unpretentious plastic and weird design with oversized buttons is done over and over again. But if the levers with twists do not cause problems (pressed - beep - it worked), then adjusting the chair and steering wheel turns into a long search for the ideal position. And not always with a happy ending. Among the trim materials, there are those that please the eye (for example, the new cream-colored leather seats), and the interior as a whole looks refreshed … but not fresh at all.











Practicality
What the old Outlander is definitely good at is in centimeters and liters. In terms of the length of the wheelbase (2670 mm), it is far from being the leaders of the class, however, in the back row, without exaggeration, it is spacious for passengers of almost any height and build. And in the trunk, you can transport a moped or arrange berths - there is a high ceiling and a flat floor. Despite the separate sofa, its halves in our version do not move back and forth, but only fold. Well, for those for whom such a transformation is not enough, there is a seven-seater Outlander with a third row of seats - there Mitsubishi promises 16 possible configurations at once.











Technics
Outlander's filling is not fresh. The development platform of Daimler Chrysler went to the crossover in the last generation, 13 years ago. Since then, the chassis has been systematically updated and evolved. Depending on the version, the "Japanese" can have front or four-wheel drive, as well as an advanced S-AWC transmission with an electronically controlled front differential lock. Among the motors - completely aspirated with a volume of 2, 2.4 and 3 liters. The first two are in-line “fours” with a variator, the last one is a V6 with a classic “automatic”.





Riding
The Outlander's road behavior is a result of Mitsubishi's desire to kill all birds with one stone. As a result of the next chassis readjustment, there really is everything here: both good and bad. Before the update, the steering wheel was considered clamped "at zero", but during the calibration the amplifier was "dismissed": the steering wheel is almost weightless on a straight steering wheel, and vibrations of five to ten degrees have almost no effect on straightness. Such a ship-like feeling should appeal to those who like to travel with a family to a long distance. As well as the soft suspension, and the smooth operation of the variator, and the additional "noise", which almost deprived the engine of the chance to shout to the salon.

But as soon as the road goes in waves or pits, the softness turns into a swing, more noticeable to the rear passengers. And the silence with which the shock absorbers swallowed small irregularities is replaced by shaking and roaring on large ones. Only Outlander fans can call the chassis tuning modern.
The same fans will “drown” for an unpretentious engine that can be fed with 92 gasoline, a good response to gas and lightning-fast reactions of the box in response to commands from the paddle shifters, as well as for the optimal dynamics of the 167-strong version 2.4 in the city and on track. On all points, it is worth agreeing with this.

The older four-cylinder engine is really not bad, the variator does not kick or hang at the rpm, and the acceleration to a hundred in 10.5 seconds and a decent amount of atmospheric thrust at three thousand rpm do not prompt the desire to urgently save up for the V6 version.
Outlander's lack of a full-fledged off-road kit casts doubt on forays into real mud. Mitsubishi seems to be joking that the crossover is like a cat: the head (read, bumper lip) has passed, the whole body will pass. But the same angles of entry, exit and ramp of 21 degrees are somehow not enough. Locking clutch? She is alone, so there is not enough of her either. In addition, there is no selective wheel braking like the GT version. Suspension travel? On the strength of a four in geometry.

Equipment
You can become the owner of a Mitsubishi Outlander having 1 699 000 ₽. For comparison: this is not enough for a RAV4 even in a modest basic configuration, but both the MazdCX-5 and the VW Tiguan in the most affordable version will be cheaper. And what is the buyer of the basic Outlander guaranteed to receive? Not so much: 146 forces from a two-liter "four" and a stepless variator. The "basic" interior will be fabric, stamped wheels (16 inches), front-wheel drive, and, for example, the seats will not be heated. But all modifications have a heated windshield, a full-size spare wheel, diode lights, height adjustment of the driver's seat, and the angle of inclination of the sofa.
The surcharge for any kind of comfort is not so high: for 1,914,000 rubles the Outlander becomes all-wheel drive, gets heated seats and mirrors, a multi-wheel and a color onboard computer, and for 2,186,000 rubles it gets a more powerful 167-horsepower engine.








Our equipment can be called the coolest among the four-cylinder: here we have cream leather, LED headlights, dual-zone climate, all-round visibility, and albeit modest, but still a set of electronic assistants: monitoring of blind spots, starting on the rise, cameras with marking lines collision warning. And if you fork out, you can get a seven-seater salon. With a motor like ours, it will cost at least 2,389,000 rubles.
Finally, the most "Outlander" is a three-liter 230-horsepower GT variant with an advanced all-wheel drive S-AWC. Right now it costs 2,522,000 rubles.
Competitors
VW Tiguan

Полноприводные X-Trail с бесступенчатым вариатором доступны за 1 800 000 ₽, а дизельная версия мощностью 130 «лошадей» с «механикой» и полным приводом обойдётся в 1 910 000 ₽. Choosing with your heart is definitely not about buying Outlander. It is difficult to fall in love with a middle-aged Japanese crossover with a losing view of style, design and ergonomics, as well as with the obvious message "yes, we saved as best we could." At the same time, we must admit that such a Mitsubishi may well be wanted, having estimated the price, costs, reliability, residual value and interior capacity.
And, by the way, they want Outlander - though not in this balanced and packaged version with a "two and five" engine, but in a modest two-liter version, weaker.

Guess what these versions attract? Yes - predictability and no surprises. In 2020, Outlander is already devoid of the ability to surprise, but its customers, it seems, are not interested in any experiments.
Should they look at the competition? Certainly. Moreover, regardless of which sense organ they select the car with, simply because the choice in this segment is wider and more interesting today than ever.
