Crossovers and SUVs occupy the largest share of the Russian market. In 2019, 733.4 thousand cars of the SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) segment were registered, which is almost half of all new passenger cars sold in Russia.

We decided to find out which configurations have the greatest demand among the top 8 best-selling crossovers in Russia. There are three prices in the picture: the basic version, the most popular version and the price of the maximum configuration. The latter does not include additional packages and options. The picture is interactive - hover the cursor over the price and see the details

The greatest demand in Russia is for medium or "near-base" configurations - those that immediately have a good set of equipment. For example, many models already in the starting version are equipped with an audio system, air conditioning, heated mirrors and heated seats, a good package of security systems, and so on. Less basic versions: they are often available only with the weakest motors, manual transmission and front-wheel drive.

However, having paid about 15–20%, you can become the owner of an all-wheel drive crossover with an automatic transmission and a sufficiently powerful engine - the greatest demand in this segment is just for 150-horsepower motors. In addition, a car with such an engine is beneficial from the point of view of taxes: the size of the annual payment will be only 5250 rubles.

In some models, the balance of demand is shifted to top-end configurations. This is explained by the fact that the Japanese Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail, for example, have good multimedia and some other useful options appear only in expensive versions.

The situation with the SkodKodiaq model is interesting: one of the most popular versions has become the top one, with a 2-liter gasoline turbo engine and a 7-speed "robot" with "wet" clutches. Probably, buyers trust this tandem more. The comparatively small difference in price between mid-range and top-end trim levels also plays a role (less than 10%). As a result, expensive Kodiacs were sold in 2019 1.5 times more than cheaper ones in the Ambition version.
