Let's be honest: the Chinese have no idea how to make good cars. But this does not prevent them from producing countless automobile entities - after all, purely statistically, some of the attempts should be successful. Anyone who remembered the theorem about endless monkeys, who sooner or later would publish War and Peace, is pretty close to the truth
For example, the Chery company offers five crossovers called Tiggo on the Russian market at once, and the devil will break his leg in them. Okay, the Tiggo 2 is discarded, it is obviously smaller and cheaper than the others. The Troika stands out because it is the original Tiggo, shamelessly copied from ToyotRAV4 and has been in production for 15 years. But models with indexes 4, 5 and 7 are extremely close in length, wheelbase, price and other formal parameters, and it is proposed to look for the difference in positioning and ideology. Like, here are three crossovers instead of one - you look, you will like something.

We are testing the freshest of the three. The Chery Tiggo 4 crossover was presented in 2017 and should be praised for sports, technology and the attraction of active youth. The pre-top version of Techno with a two-liter aspirated and a variator costs 1 109 900 rubles (excluding discounts), and now we will find out whether such a Tiggo is capable of competing with the luminaries of the budget segment.
Interior
If you look into the Chery salon, and then look into the Tiggo 4 salon, you will surely be pleasantly surprised. Direct competitor Hyundai Cret pleases with a neat design with a couple of original touches, decent materials, the absence of visible assembly jambs, and most importantly - a couple of large and elegant displays that you do not expect to see in a car of this class for such money. A scoreboard may even flash in my head: "Isn't this the best interior in the segment?" Which will inevitably go out as soon as you start to discover one oddity after another. I will list.









Practicality
We managed to get used to the fact that Chinese cars are often more spacious than competitors - after all, in the Middle Kingdom, the second row is valued no less than the first. Chery Tiggo 4 in this regard does not upset, but does not bear any revelations. With a length of 4318 mm, it surpasses the same Cretu by five centimeters, by two in the wheelbase (there are 2610 mm between the axles), and the difference roughly corresponds to these figures. But there are nuances.








Technics
When it comes to hardware, the Tiggo 4 is at the forefront of Chery's progress. It's built on the latest T1X modular platform and boasts multi-link rear suspension! And in front - the usual MacPherson struts. The same "cart" is used on the new generation Tiggo 7, which has not yet arrived in Russia. But the main drawback of the architecture compared to its closest competitors is the lack of even a theoretical possibility to put all-wheel drive here.





Riding
Despite the already voiced shortcomings, the Chery Tiggo 4 standing still makes a really good impression. But as soon as you go and all the positive things literally crumble into dust: the suspension is furiously tough! "Chery" bounces even on the simplest irregularities like road markings. The tremors do not subside for a second, and when driving through large obstacles, it becomes clear that the suspension cannot cope with the vibrations of the large 18-inch wheels. In addition, the steering wheel is insulated from impacts almost as poorly as in cars built on the B0 platform - it pounds on the hands without any hesitation.
To be fair, I will say that the energy intensity of the Tiggo 4 is also almost "zero": after gaining speed, the crossover can easily digest broken primers, and it is better to accelerate in front of the speed bumps, and not slow down - it turns out more comfortable. If "Tiggo" was a rally shell, such settings would fit, but they do not suit a city crossover. Moreover, when they are not accompanied by gambling control.

Turns the Tiggo 4 bland and unprincipled, although it cannot be caught in illogical reactions or excessive rolls. And by the standards of Chinese cars, this can be called progress - probably, at the headquarters of Chery, they are very grateful to the British from Lotus, who helped to fine-tune the chassis. Because against the background of Geely Atlas or the neighboring Tiggo 5, our "four" can really pass for a sports car. And if colleagues are to be believed who drove a turbocharged car with an electric booster, things could be even better. There is, it is said, more feedback and less flimsy background effort that frustrates our Tiggo with the "gidrach". Especially in parking modes.

Another (and main) reason to think about buying a turbocharged top version is the fact that the atmospheric one simply does not go. The Chinese traditionally hide data on overclocking to hundreds, but everything happens for a long time and dreary, and besides, under a loud and hysterical wheezing of the engine: the sound insulation of the Tiggo 4 is weak. The variator, perhaps, has less "rubber" than you expect, but the responses to gas are far from ideal, and the most striking effect of turning on the sport mode is the corresponding indication on the dashboard. In general, the additional payment of 90 thousand rubles for the supercharged version looks like a very rational act.
Equipment
Especially considering that the top-end-over-top Tiggo costs the same 1,190,000 rubles as the two-liter front-wheel drive Cret in the mid-range Comfort configuration. There will be a leatherette interior, an electric parking brake, a downhill assist system and an auto hold function, and at the same time, there will finally be deflectors for second-row passengers and - important! - side airbags and curtain airbags.








If you want to go to the bottom of the tiggo market, it's pretty good there too. The basic version of Start with a five-speed "mechanics" will cost 899,900 rubles, that is, 72,000 cheaper than the simplest Crete. And there will already be air conditioning, rear parking sensors, light and rain sensors, remote control central locking and heated front seats - all this in Hyundai will not give you.
The next Comfort configuration is already 1,029,900 rubles. But a big step in price is justified by a serious gain in equipment. First, the variator. Secondly, the same multimedia is useless, but cute. And a whole bunch of really nice things: a rear-view camera, cruise control, heated injectors and windshield, leather multifunction steering wheel, a second USB connector and a hard shelf in the luggage compartment.

Finally, the same Tiggo 4 Techno as ours costs 1 109 900 rubles and offers really shameful equipment. The interior is sewn into leatherette, the steering wheel and the rear seats are heated, the key can not be removed from the pocket, the driver's seat is powered by electric drives, music plays from six speakers instead of four (and plays decently), and the same seven-inch digital display flaunts on the dashboard.
And the most unexpected thing is an optional “smart bracelet” for 9900 rubles, next to which even a similar solution from Jaguar Land Rover fades. If only because the British gadget does not have a display. And here he is, and this contraption can show the time and count steps, open the car and start the engine, synchronize with the phone … Do you really need it? The owner of the Tiggo 4 is unlikely. But the manager at the Chery dealership is very even, because with the terms "gesture control" and "smart key-bracelet" speech about superiority over competitors sound much more convincing.
Competitors
Hyundai Creta
О Крете мы говорили в каждом втором абзаце, но что поделать - именно она ближе всего к Tiggo 4 по идеологии. Renault Arkana
Arkanдолжна была стать суперхитом, но пока она лишь изредка цепляется за топ-25 российских продаж. В контексте борьбы с Tiggo 4 амбициозное кросс-купе интересно дизайном и технологичным имиджем - например, уже в базе здесь есть полностью светодиодные фары. А ещё оба автомобиля можно купить через интернет. Правда, Аркана и больше, и дороже: начальная версия (114-сильный атмосферник 1.6, МКП5, передний привод) стоит 1 045 000 рублей. За вариатор надо доплатить 55 тысяч, а если вам нужен 150-сильный турбомотор 1.33, то раскошелиться придётся уже на 1 280 000 рублей. Ну, а самый полный фарш на полном же приводе потребует 1 555 000 рублей." style="width: 823px; margin-right: 8px;">

Renault Kaptur
Если хочется подешевле, но всё ещё стильно, то Renault может предложить другую модель - Kaptur. За самую навороченную версию Extreme (полный привод, четырёхступенчатый «автомат», 143-сильный двухлитровый мотор) просят 1 378 000 рублей. Базовая комплектация с теми же мотором и коробкой, что у простейшей Арканы, - это 969 тысяч. Вариатор, кстати, тоже доступен, но только для переднеприводных машин с мотором 1.6. А полный привод - это всегда два литра и либо АКП4, либо МКП6." style="width: 823px; margin-right: 8px;">

Haval H2
У марки Haval - одна из самых солидных репутаций среди всех китайских производителей. У компактного кроссовера H2 тоже приличный салон, тоже жёсткая подвеска - и тоже полуторалитровый турбомотор, развивающий 143 лошадиные силы. Альтернатив ему на нашем рынке не предусмотрено, по трансмиссиям тоже не разгуляешься: полный привод - только с шестиступенчатым «автоматом», а вот передний может сочетаться ещё и с шестиступенчатой «механикой». Комплектаций всего две, диапазон цен - от 1 168 400 до 1 341 300 рублей." style="width: 823px; margin-right: 8px;">

Changan CS35 Plus
Ещё один кретоподобный «китаец» - Changan CS35 Plus - вышел на наш рынок всего несколько месяцев назад и никакой репутации пока не заработал. Ставка тут тоже делается в первую очередь на оснащение, а динамика принесена в жертву: 1,6-литровый атмосферный мотор развивает всего 117 лошадиных сил. Привод только передний, коробки - пятиступенчатая «механика» или шестиступенчатый «автомат», а между базовой и топовой версиями совсем небольшая разница по цене: 1 079 900 рублей против 1 219 900." style="width: 823px; margin-right: 8px;">

Output
The efforts of the Chinese should be noted: they do a lot, and they even succeed in a lot. But what is happening sorely lacks awareness and answers to the questions "why" and "why". Chery Tiggo 4 looks nice without any fools, it has a pleasant interior and rich equipment, but the impression is greatly spoiled by offensive and unnecessary miscalculations. Pointlessly rigid suspension, flaws in ergonomics, fashionable, but not really working electronic gadgets - it was better not to do them at all than to do so.

On the other hand, for those who choose a car using a calculator and a list of options, this "Tiggo" can be a real gift. In general, Chery's car "War and Peace" has not yet worked out, but something that looks like a good tabloid novel is already there. This means that the theorem about the infinite "Chinese" will work sooner or later.
