The organizers of the Car of The Year Japan 2019-2020 competition have announced the winner. It was the fifth generation ToyotRAV4 crossover.

The previous two years, the victory went to Volvo's crossovers: in 2017 - the XC60, and in 2018 - the XC40. The first foreign model to win the competition in 2013 was the seventh generation Volkswagen Golf. The Car of the Year Japan award was established in 1980.

  • The jury of the competition, consisting of 69 Japanese journalists, gave the RAV4 436 points. The second place was taken by the Mazda3 family (328 points), the third - by the BMW 3 Series (290 points). For Toyot, this is the eighth win in the history of the competition, and the last time the main prize went to the third-generation Prius hybrid in 2009.

  • Winners in four additional categories have also been announced. The best foreign car was the BMW 3 Series family, the most innovative was the restyled Nissan Skyline sedan with a new version of the road autopilot, the most emotional was the Jeep Wrangler SUV, and the Nissan Dayz / Mitsubishi eK family won in the category for key cars.
