Well, here's how to do without ichthyological associations? Not only that, instead of a sedan, we are now dealing with a "four-door coupe" rather hydro … sorry, aerodynamic forms, but also the muzzle of the car is purely fishy. Well-fed, phlegmatic, mustachioed - in general, there was Sonata, became Somata. Well, hello, how are you?

In fact, the moment is quite important: the designers of Hyundai-Ki took the courage and decided to be different. It's not that they've never had provocative cars - take the asymmetrical Veloster. Or goggle-eyed Opirus, don't be remembered by nightfall. Still, over the last decade, Koreans have followed the safe, pop way and painted cars that everyone liked - or, as in the case of the current SantFe, at least followed the fashion. Whatever it is.

The new Sonat is going to dictate this fashion. Adventure!

These are not Germans, who have a safety net in the form of a traditional sedan behind every Gran Coupe, Sportback and other non-format. Hyundai is sending the avant-garde Sonata into one of the most conservative segments as it is, without understudies - and even its sister Optima, if anything, will not cover it up. Because she's even crazier now.

And you know what? It will work. Even if you, like me, do not like the expression on her face, you must admit: the Sonata looks spectacular, and in some places it is really cool. The thin bezel of LEDs at the stern is something of a futuristic reading of the Dodge Charger. A huge "duck tail" and jagged edges on the upper part of the lanterns are like a ridge of a rock blown by all the winds.

And the main detail is the decorative stripes running from the headlights along the hood. They are chrome-plated and LED at the same time: they shine during the day, they shine at night, and with a spectacular gradient. It seems like the Koreans have just won the competition for the most useless but funniest cartoon of the season. Where is the BMW X6 with its nostrils!

In general, the main task Sonat performs brilliantly: even going to a Hyundai dealer in search of a toilet, you will definitely stop near this car. And you will certainly want to sit in it - and there you will already fall under the influence of fellow interior designers.

The interior looks most elegant in a combined black and beige version, when the influxes on the sides of the dashboard are visually emphasized - just like in modern Lexus. But even in the conservative black and black colors, the Sonata is good. Expensive materials, appropriate strokes of chrome - abundant, but without gypsy - and well-worked details like “jewelry” notches on the climate control knobs and steering column levers. Push-button transmission selector? You will have to get used to it, but I'm more for than against.

Best of all, this interior isn't tainted by the sensory plague - with the new Optim already showing worrying symptoms. But "tactile and physical" doesn't mean "old fashioned" at all. Where high-tech is needed, Koreans give it in full. The digital tidy is drawn beautifully and sensibly, and when changing modes of movement, the design changes through a spectacular "explosive" animation - although it is at these moments that the graphics slow down.

The optional head-up display is pleasant and useful to look at, and the multimedia system pleases everyone in general - both in the picture, and in the speed and flexibility of the interface. For example, widgets can be rearranged at will, and the content of the "passenger" segment in the right third of the screen is changed by a simple swipe up and down: you don't have to go into the menu, taking away the navigation from the driver. Gracefully!

Shoals? Where without them! For example, the inner door handles are similar to one of the tests in Fort Boyard: there is beautiful and delicate skin around, but you stick your hand inside and you feel … Well, not snakes and spiders, but cheap hard plastic, like in Moskvich. Brrr. Or here's another: the chairs are comfortable and cozy, but you want to lower them lower, because now even a medium-sized person has very little to the ceiling, especially on cars with a panoramic roof.

The same problem plagues the rear riders. And in general, the second row of the Sonata cannot be called enviable: heating, USB and air vents - that's all the blessings.A separate climate zone, backrest adjustments and a folding galaxy control panel, as in the top ToyotCamry, cannot be obtained here for any price. The past generation in this regard also did not indulge, but if then everything could be explained by economy, now, with a new level of development of the salon, it is time to talk about a conscious choice of philosophy.

After all, Sonat has quite seriously changed its ideology, and not only design

We are dealing with the so-called third-generation platform - the Koreans suggest counting from the sixth Sonata before last. There are no structural revolutions: the main changes are aimed at strengthening the body “cage” in the name of better safety, especially in low-overlap impacts. The number of elements made of hot-formed steel has increased, the connections in the area of the front struts and sills have been revised, and along with more durable materials came lightness: the weight of the body has been reduced by 21 kilograms.

Suspension schemes have not changed: McPherson in front, multi-link in the back, but with modified geometry and a different shape of the trailing arms. And the most important thing here is the reinforced stretchers and their attachment points to the body, and the Koreans call the main goal not at all to reduce vibrations for the sake of greater comfort, but to improve handling. Imagine, Sonat decided to become a driver!

Was it done? Catching the nuances when it's 10 degrees Celsius outside and rain, and Velcro on the wheels, is simply stupid. But it looks like there are not many rolls here, with responsiveness and grip margin, the order, and slightly ambiguous feedback may be precisely the result of stupid test conditions. I can say for sure that the Sonat turns well, but if it is interesting - we will only find out in the spring. And then we will check the matured brakes: the discs have grown in diameter by 25 millimeters in the front and 22 millimeters at the rear. Although there are no questions about the information content and linearity of the drive already now.

And what they are for and will definitely stay is for a smooth ride. The serenity and unobtrusiveness that pleased the previous Sonata gave way to density and detail. Let's say that the micro-profile is filtered just as well (remember about soft tires!), But any shear wave of asphalt without cuts is transmitted to the salon - it seems that this sedan does not bounce only when it stands still.

At the same time, everything is fine with energy consumption, and for several hundred kilometers on various roads of the Krasnodar Territory, no breakdowns were noticed - only a couple of small hits when the front struts chose the rebound course. Still, the Sonata could drive more comfortably, especially now that the sound insulation has pumped from poor to bearable, and the tires have ceased to pester even at speeds over 120.

What can not be said about the motor: when accelerating to the floor, it shamelessly fills the interior with a dry and high roar, which is unpleasant to listen to for more than five seconds. In general, two engines have been prepared for the Russian Sonata, but we all know very well about the two-liter, 150-horsepower Nu series aspirated, and besides, such cars will only be available from next year. Therefore, the focus of the test is on the 2.5 unit from the new SmartStream family.

However, in the simplest version: with the traditional variable valve timing system instead of the unusual CVVD, where the duration is regulated instead of the degree of opening of the intake valves. Moreover, Russian engines are equipped with distributed injection, while the previous "four" 2.4 of the ThetII family had direct injection! The blame, as always, is offered by the quality of the fuel.

The result is a step forward and two steps back: our Sonat is content with the old six-speed "automatic", because the eight-band transmission is put only on "direct" motors. Recoil even decreased compared to 2.4 GDI: 180 forces instead of 188, 232 Nm instead of 241 - and, as a result, a loss in dynamics. It was nine seconds exactly, it became two dozen more. Well, why was there a fence in the garden?

Such a Sonata rides well, but absolutely without revelations - and only on condition that the sports algorithm is activated, when the transmission almost does not dull in transient modes. After 120-130 kilometers per hour, the dynamics becomes completely thinner, and most importantly: the drive, for which the Koreans offer to exchange their former comfort, is useless to wait from the sedan.

Correspondence zeroing on competitors does not look too optimistic: it is likely that, against the background of Camry and Mazda6, this Sonata will turn out to be the most shaking, not the fastest (although the 2.5-liter Toyota is even more phlegmatic), and it is not a fact that it will bring revelations about taxiing.

What does it mean? That's right, absolutely nothing

Prices are about the same as those of rivals: from one and a half million in the base to two and a half in full mince. But while Toyot and Mazd rely on traditional values, Hyundai offers avant-garde design, well-designed interior and on-board electronics at a fundamentally different level, which Japanese competitors will only reach with a generational change. And that's not a fact.

In today's consumer value system, this is a killer combo that breaks down any riding imperfections. Therefore, everything goes to the fact that such brooding fish will very soon begin to massively inhabit our ponds-parking lots and roads-rivers. At least until the appearance of the predator - in the form of a new Optima.
