Video: Science Or What: The Strangest Studies Of British Scientists
Education in Great Britain is considered one of the best in the world - it is not for nothing that Cambridge and Oxford universities regularly top the rankings of educational institutions. But there are so many great minds in the UK that some scientists take on research that no one else would have thought of. It is thanks to them that we can find out who drives better, which cars do not like birds and many more interesting facts. Here are the most important ones.
Fact number 1. Women drive better
Great and terrible British scientists came to this conclusion after analyzing 585 thousand traffic violations in the UK in 2017. Men sinned more in all respects: they exceeded the speed limit, parked incorrectly, drove drunk, received fines for careless driving … And they applied for insurance payments much more often: 65 percent of insured events occurred with male drivers.
And if at this point you wanted to say “let's not rush to conclusions,” then … it's too late - in Great Britain, the conclusions of scientists have already been heard and taken into account. Therefore, premiums for female drivers in the country are now on average £ 100 lower. And this is almost 8500 rubles.
Fact number 2. There are cars that birds shit on more often than others.
Obviously - for the washed ones, right? Or those whose owners are about to get a lot of money soon. But researchers from the UK have a different opinion on this matter.
Scientists are sure that most of all birds "love" cars of red color and its shades: 18 percent of the scarlet cars participating in the study were marked with birds. In second place are blue cars. There is a roughly 14 percent chance that the birds will not be able to just fly past the blue car. Black closes the top three with a score of 11 percent. Least of all birds (in any case, British) are interested in cars of white (7 percent) and silver (3 percent). Well, if you want to surely protect your car from ordinary swallows, take a green car, because it accounts for only one percent of bird attacks.
We're not hinting at anything, but the British chose green as their racing color decades ago. Coincidence?
Fact number 3. It is better not to drive a car in summer.
Researchers from the University of Surrey have concluded that driving a car in summer is very dangerous. Residents of the northern regions of Russia at this moment, probably, choked on tea, but we hasten to add: scientists considered summer exploitation dangerous in terms of the impact on well-being.
The fact is that in the warm season, many motorists are stuck in traffic jams for a long time, and often with open windows. Thus, drivers voluntarily doom themselves to oxygen starvation and suffocation: when the car gets stuck in traffic in the summer, the content of harmful and openly dangerous substances in the cabin increases by 40 percent - even with the windows closed. And with open doors, this value doubles.
Fatigue, deterioration in concentration, diseases of the nervous system, depression - these are just flowers that carry summer downtime in traffic jams. The berries will be damage to the mucous membrane of the eyes, nasal cavity and bronchi, which can become harbingers of much more serious diseases. For all these joys, we should thank the hydrocarbons contained in the exhaust gases.
Therefore, British scientists are urging either to reduce the operating time of cars in the summer, or to monitor the condition of the air that enters the cabin.
Fact number 4. There is a connection between a person's career and their place in the back row of a car.
Life hack for parents: if you want to help your child become successful, then try to sit him more often in the center in the back seat. British scientists are confident that children who regularly sit over the transmission tunnel have a great chance of becoming businessmen or taking leadership positions.
After studying more than 200 families, each with at least three children, researchers found that 90 percent of the children who sat in the back row in the center are now in high positions. Scientists attribute this to the fact that such a position forms in the child certain character traits that help him achieve a quick rise in the career ladder.
In addition, 44 percent of those sitting in the center of the back sofa in later life are distinguished by high contact, 25 percent - patience. And another 21 percent of children in the future showed the ability to adapt well to difficult working conditions.
And this despite the fact that for 43 percent of families with three children, quarrels over the back seat are a regular occurrence: all children want to sit at the window, but someone is sure to be left out. Presumably, after the report of British scientists, the situation may change. The study, by the way, was commissioned by Skoda.
Fact number 5. Driving … dulls
In 2017, The Independent published part of a study by specialists from the University of Leicester. In short, the essence is as follows: a group of scientists led by Kishan Bakranii came to the disappointing conclusion that driving a car over long distances affects the brain in about the same way as spending three hours in front of the TV.
The focus group included over 500,000 Britons aged 37 to 73. Each year, each participant in the experiment took an IQ test, as well as a series of tests to test memory. And, as you might guess, the results showed a deterioration in both memory and intelligence from year to year. Naturally, aging of the body also plays a role, but scientists believe that the main generator of regression of the participants in the experiment was a sedentary lifestyle. It leads to a deterioration in blood circulation - the cells of the body are poorly supplied with oxygen, which causes such disastrous consequences.
So, if you are reading these lines, lounging comfortably in an armchair or on a sofa, do not let the British scientists think badly of us once again - do a warm-up. Push-ups there, abs … And instead of standing for an hour in traffic jams, take a walk.
