Remember what the first LR Discovery Sport was like - the one shown back in 2015? Futuristic on the outside, successful in technique, but completely without revelations on the inside. Yes, it had a seven-seater version and countless number of USB ports, but this interior will seem cozy only to those who grew up in Zhiguli - too boring, simple and not at all in keeping with the premium image of the Land Rover brand. Especially against the backdrop of the RR Velar and the large LR Discovery that appeared soon. In general, it was time to change something …
Therefore, the British took and changed everything in general. Except, it seems, the index - the internal code of the new LR Discovery is the same as the previous one: L550. I don’t know why you need this information, but the following 5 facts will surely help you understand the rest of the innovations of the most affordable "Disco".
Fact number 1. He's actually new. Almost
For starters, it has a new platform. More precisely, as new - this is no longer understand what a deep modernization of the "bogie", which dates back to the LR Freelander. It is now called the PTA, and the Range Rover Evoque introduced last year is based on it. The main feature of this architecture is the readiness to install hybrid and electric powertrains. Actually, in Europe, Disco Sport now has all micro-hybrid power units, with a 48-volt on-board network, a starter-generator and a small lithium-ion battery (with the exception of the base 150-horsepower diesel engine).
Such crossovers cannot run on electric traction, but they know how to save fuel in traffic jams and at traffic lights. True, they still did not reach Russia - we are entitled to only traditional diesel and gasoline turbo engines of the Ingenium line with a volume of two liters and a capacity of 150 to 240 horsepower. All Russian Discovery Sport are equipped with nine-speed automatic transmissions and an all-wheel drive transmission based on a multi-plate clutch. True, now the electronics can completely turn off the gimbal when driving at a constant speed - this helps to save a little more fuel - and the Terrain Response 2 system has a fully automatic mode.
The body is also new - the share of high-strength steels in its design has increased, which means that the stiffness has also grown, and by 13 percent at once. The subframes are stiffer, which helps to reduce vibration levels as well as improve handling.
That is, in terms of hardware, it really is almost a new car. However, there are not many changes outside: the door openings, the shape of the rear pillar, the stampings on the sidewalls and the hood are all the same. New - only headlights (now their shape resembles a "big" Disco), lights and bumpers. It looks, of course, modern and bright (especially with the R-Dynamic package, as in the photo below), but how does this look fit the Discovery Sport? Write in the comments!
Fact number 2. The salon is also new. And it's glorious
Inside, everything just looks familiar. Particularly confusing is the similar architecture of the dashboard with the massive center console framed by aluminum. But if you look closely, then … you will not find a single old part here!
Discovery Sport, like the rest of Land Rovers, is now as touchy as possible, but made simpler than the same soplatform RR Evoque. For example, there is no second display, which is responsible for the climate and the operation of the Terrain Response system, for the older brothers - instead of it there is a large glossy panel with touch buttons. The Touch Pro's 10-inch multimedia screen has swapped places with the air vents, so you don't have to reach for it anymore. The complex works smartly, supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (for a small surcharge) and seems much more successful than the hardware that is installed on the older model. And the fact that some functions are still controlled by physical buttons is not only pleasing, but really turns out to be more practical, more convenient and, I would like to believe, more reliable.
The steering wheel is also new, like that of the older Discovery or the same RR Evoque, with touch buttons that respond not only to pressing with touches, but also to "swipes": moving your thumb over the virtual round on the right spoke, you can, for example, turn up the volume. In front of the driver is a bright digital tidy. And instead of the controversial washer of the selector "machine" - a traditional lever.
There are almost no changes in the rear of the cabin, only the second-row seats are now equipped with adjustments in the length and angle of the backrests already in the base. But the optional third row in the unfolded form, as it ate almost the entire trunk, while offering some kind of comfort only to children, and continues to do so. But in the five-seater version, the trunk is large (570 liters!), And passengers in the second row are comfortable and spacious, if you do not pay attention to the central tunnel, which is too high here.
Fact number 3. Rides better than before. But it is not exactly
The pre-styling LR Discovery Sport had two more problems - too stiff suspension and imperfect sound insulation. And let's start with the last: Shumka really got better if we are talking about cars in European specifications on European roads. Mild hybrid installations, both petrol and diesel, work equally quietly, the hum from 20-inch tires almost does not penetrate into the cabin, and otherwise there is nothing to complain about. However, it is not yet clear how the Russian Disco Sport will sound - and most importantly, how it will ride. Most likely, about the same as before.
With comfort, everything is a little more complicated: according to first impressions, the crossover has become softer and at the same time more collected. Even on huge and heavy wheels, and on 18-inch wheels it will probably go even more pleasantly. The only thing that confuses me is the excessive attention to small things on the road - although I am ready to blame this drawback on too large wheels of European modifications. But the LR Discovery Sport is still not afraid of large irregularities, and only in very frightening pits do the shock absorbers respond hard and noisy.
Fact number 4. Off-road, he is still able to surprise
Actually, it would be strange to doubt this: any Land Rover, even the glamorous RR Evoque, will almost certainly drive even where not every Niva owner will go. Not the fact that without damaging its glossy sides and beautiful bumpers, but it will pass. So Discovery Sport - with a conventional (but very durable) clutch, no depressions or mechanical blockages - climbed the rocks and descended the steep embankments of the Spanish Land Rover Experience school with amazing ease. If you want vnatyag by a centimeter, if you want to move - the main thing is that the tires on sharp stones remain intact.
And in order not to spoil the wheels, you can turn on the "transparent hood" function (option for 54 thousand rubles): the electronics records the picture from the all-round cameras, and then displays it on the multimedia screen with a slight delay, showing what is happening under the car. It looks impressive, but in real conditions it slows down slightly, and I could not trust this picture. It is more convenient to use another circular view mode, when the picture from the front and side cameras is displayed in real time.
Otherwise, this is a typical Land Rover. The updated Terrain Response complex either diligently imitates locks, practically preventing slipping of the suspended wheels, or dissolves the stabilization system and ABS, helping to slow the car down on loose surfaces. In general, if your Discovery Sport has the right tires, then you will get out of a half-meter snowdrift and get to your dacha. Even after many days of downpours.
Fact number 5. Costs more. And is already on sale in Russia
After restyling, the LR Discovery Sport has expected a rise in price, but not that much: the most affordable gasoline crossover in the P200 version costs from 2.93 million rubles, 80 thousand rubles more than before. But already in the base it will have 17-inch wheels, multimedia with a 10-inch display, dual-zone climate, a rear-view camera, parking sensors, heated front seats, steering wheel and windshield, and even fully LED optics!
A 150-horsepower diesel engine will cost only 9,000 rubles more, and a 180-horsepower diesel will cost a little more than three million, and a 249-horsepower gasoline LR Discovery can be bought for three and a half million. In the top-end R-Dynamic HSE with a beautiful body kit and large wheels, the most powerful Discovery Sport will cost 4.082 million. Expensive?
Not really.Disco Sport is still cheaper than most competitors: the most affordable of the entire German three BMW X3 (in the xDrive20i version) costs from 3.18 million rubles; 249-horsepower Audi Q5 - from 3.27 million rubles, and Mercedes-Benz GLC with 197-horsepower gasoline turbo engine - from 3.65 million rubles. For the Volvo XC60 they will ask for a minimum of 3.269 million rubles, and for the all-wheel drive Lexus RX 300 - at least 3.369 million rubles.
And you know what's the funniest thing? That these price tags do not affect real demand at all. Since the beginning of 2019, Lexus RX has become the best-selling crossover in the class (more than 7 thousand cars in 10 months), followed by BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC (4452 and 3984 cars, respectively), and Volvo and Audi have sold a little more than 2600 cars with the beginning of the year. Where is the LR Discovery Sport, you ask? Unfortunately, in the catch-up - a little more than a thousand cars in 10 months. But the answer to the question "why" and whether the updated Disco Sport will help correct the situation, I, frankly, have not yet been.
