The clumsiness of the domestic automaker, which was already the talk of the town, is a thing of the past. Today AvtoVAZ rolls out new product after new product with enviable regularity - if not whole models, but at least versions. At the end of the summer, the public was presented with the "automatic" Xray Cross, and now LadVestAT with the same transmission is making its debut

Moreover, unlike the VAZ "crossover", Vest received a new box in all versions at once - from the sedan in the Classic configuration to the SW Cross station wagon in the "top". Only the charged Sport modification was ignored, but it is also reasonable. The commercial vehicles will hit showrooms at the end of November, and many dealerships already have test drive vehicles. We drove several hundred kilometers in such cars along the difficult roads of the North Caucasus.

But first - a summary of the previous series. In general, the Vest with two pedals has existed since the debut of the model. Only this is a car with a "robot" - a conventional mechanical box and clutch, which are controlled by electronics instead of the driver. Then, in 2015, VAZ employees argued that such a transmission solves all problems at once: it has a simpler design and higher efficiency than a conventional "machine". And, of course, the price is lower.

No one seemed to be embarrassed by the fact that Fiat, General Motors, Toyota, Peugeot, and Citroen had used the single-clutch “robot” in the past … and everyone recognized it as a dead end. Because such boxes usually twitch and dull when shifting, and the clutch or its actuator does not last as long as we would like. Because no electronics can adequately imitate the footwork of a live driver.

The same symptoms were present in the "robot" VAZ - although the factory engineers were already modifying (quite successfully, however) the "soft" of the transmission during serial production. And now, having stepped on a global rake, VAZ employees say that the "robot" was a temporary and forced decision - VestAMT leaves the stage, giving way to a new gearbox.

In stories about the new product, representatives of the plant try to avoid the word "variator", replacing it with the term "automatic transmission". I wouldn't be surprised if managers at car dealerships are also told to strictly adhere to this rule, and this can confuse buyers.

But the essence of the terminology does not change: the new Vesta box is precisely the variator. And it is made by the Japanese company Jatco

The unit belongs to the JF015E series, under various indexes it is installed on many models of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi concern, as well as on Suzuki cars. The main design feature of the box is that the variator part with a metal pushing belt in it is combined with a two-stage planetary gearbox inherent in classic "automatic machines". This combination makes the machine more compact and also reduces the stress on the belt and cones.

However, the variator is not the only novelty of VAZ sedans and station wagons. Along with it, VestAT received a new engine! More precisely, the old H4M unit familiar from Renault, the production of which was set up in Togliatti several years ago. Combining the variator with native VAZ engines turned out to be too troublesome.

But the pair H4M + JF015E has long been flown in Logan Stepway City, Renault Kaptur or the aforementioned Xray Cross. With only one "but": all these are machines of the B0 platform, and Vesta has its own platform. Therefore, it was more difficult to stick a new power unit under the hood - it required other engine mounts, new drive shafts, and an original exhaust system.

And this adaptation is perhaps the best thing that has happened to the Togliatti sedan over the years. After the release of the station wagon.

With the new engine in the cabin of Vesta, there was noticeably less noise and vibration. So much so that a couple of times I caught myself wanting to start an already running engine.Although according to Japanese traditions (and Renault H4M is, in turn, Nissan's HR16), it does not even have a decorative cover with which European minders are struggling with noise.

Thanks to the variator, the motor runs most of the time at the optimal speed for the road situation. When Vest is traveling at a constant speed, the tachometer needle walks around 2000 rpm - of course, if this is not a speed far beyond a hundred. In this mode, the engine is also almost indistinguishable in the cabin - the tires are more audible. Yes, and those rustle not too loudly - thanks to the nap fenders, which have recently begun to be installed on all Vestas.

But on overtaking or climbing, the revolutions immediately jump to four thousand, and if you press the gas pedal "to the floor", then to five. Although even in this case, the box diligently imitates the classic "automatic", going through the virtual steps. Here the motor, of course, already gives a voice - alas, faceless. And for an energetic acceleration, the 1.6-liter "aspirated" simply lacks strength. Especially under the hood of the SW Cross station wagon, which has larger and heavier wheels.

H4M (AvtoVAZ prefers this index) develops 113 hp. - this figure is in the middle between the indicators of VAZ engines 1.6 and 1.8. Due to the phase shifters, the Japanese unit has a richer "bottom", and closer to the cutoff, it pulls regularly. But in acceleration to 100 km / h its advantage is small: the VestAT sedan spends 11.3 seconds on it, and the 122-strong Vest with a "robot" - only 0.8 seconds more.

I even managed to catch a moment when the speed of the car increased, and the engine speed decreased at the same time! And it is unlikely that VestAT will appeal to fans of traffic light races: the Togliatti sedan starts off slowly and smoothly. And in general, the engine responds to the accelerator sluggishly, with delays, forcing the driver to not stand on ceremony with the gas pedal during active driving.

What is the reason? In the settings that VAZ engineers prescribed when adapting the power unit to Vesta. However, Logan Stepway City reacts to gas in a similar way. Most likely, due to smooth reactions, engineers are trying to save an expensive CVT. The Jatco JF015E has proven itself to be a rather problematic unit, since the days of the first generation Nissan Juke and Qashqai crossovers. The box had hydraulics failing, the sun gear in the planetary gearbox broke, the cones and the belt quickly wore out …

Since then, the variator has been refined and strengthened, but experts still unanimously recommend periodically changing the oil in it and avoiding overheating: the transmission does not like abrupt starts, off-roading, long fidgeting in traffic jams and other bullying.

However, in the documents of AvtoVAZ, the box is considered "maintenance-free", and oil is poured into it for the entire service life. The statistics of specialized services show that with such an attitude, the variator is sent for overhaul after 120-140 thousand kilometers. With sparing VAZ settings, the mileage will probably increase even more, but in Russia 200 thousand is not a reason to throw the car into a landfill, which means it makes sense to take care of extending the resource of the box in advance. After all, it already has two oil filters (coarse and fine) installed, and they are in the spare parts catalogs for Renault and Nissan. As well as the branded Nissan CVT NS-3 oil, which has a lot of analogues. That is, the Japanese believe that maintenance is still necessary for the variator?

But in general, the game is worth the candle: Vest with a variator turned out to be a very harmonious car. Yes, this version cannot be called a driver's version: the variator does not even have a sport mode, and the manual algorithm does not add speed. Well, the chassis of the VAZ car is pleasant to drive, but not gambling.The new power unit is perfectly combined with a comfortable, yet unkillable suspension. In the Caucasus, there are enough secondary roads, where asphalt has not been shifted, it seems, since the days of the USSR. The holes are such that it hurts to look at, and the Vest variator rushes over them at a speed of over a hundred without a hint of breakdowns, the envy of crossovers.

I am also glad that AvtoVAZ continues to introduce pleasant little things on its sedans that brighten the life of the driver and passengers. This time, along with the new box, Vesta added folding mirrors, cornering lights, heated steering wheel, new seat upholstery, black headlining and frameless brushes!

Prices, of course, have also grown: the surcharge for the variator is 50 thousand rubles against 25 thousand for the outgoing "robot". True, along with the new box, the buyer will also receive rear disc brakes on all versions of the car. The simplest sedan (Classic) will cost 736,900 rubles, a station wagon - 773,900 rubles. For a car with a variator and all the new "buns" you need to pay already from 924,900 rubles (sedan in the Exclusive configuration) to 1,023,900 rubles (VestSW Cross Luxe with optional packages).

But even with these price tags "automatic" Vest is cheaper than budget "foreign cars" B-class in comparable trim levels

And it will certainly be in demand. Yes, Vest and so in the market leaders, but the "robot" was hanging on her like a dead weight. In the debut, the share of cars with it was 15–20 percent, and recently the AMT version was chosen by hardly every tenth buyer. And he, for sure, remained unhappy.

At the same time, in general, in the B-class, interest in two-pedal cars is growing - they are already being sold more than cars with "mechanics"! This means that the new version can seriously affect the sales figures for VAZ sedans and station wagons, because in terms of comfort, the “automatic” Vesta, at least, is not inferior to its closest competitors. Finally, with the variator, completely new paths open up for the car - to fashionable car-sharing services and rentals.
