“My wife tried to divorce me twice. The first is the Jaguar XKR-S GT and the second is the Jaguar F-Type,”says David Moore, Engineer, Jaguar Land Rover Classic. The five-liter compressor V8 barked deafeningly at the start, and the entire huge pavilion seemed to come to life: a deep uterine roar, clearly not constrained by any environmental collars, resonated on the slightly lowered windows of Daimlers, jumped on the sides of the classic I-Types and Defenders and was so thick and multi-layered that it was enough for all the inhabitants of the hangar: it seemed that hundreds of cars standing here suddenly started up all at once.

XKR-S GT and F-Type live in a hangar with special rights - at the personal request of David. Prior to the JLR Classic, he worked in the Special Vehicle Operations division, teaching the factory Jaguars and Land Rovers to drive faster, and these two beasts are his special pride. In general, the hangar is occupied by classic, rare and iconic Jaguar and Land Rover models, and all this is more like a luxury sanatorium: every few weeks each car is sent for diagnostics, cleaned, started and “walked” to keep the equipment in working order. Under the glass of each car there is a checklist, which contains the date of the last engine start and information about the technical condition. In a word, a quiet, happy old age is guaranteed for thoroughbred cars.

In this hangar there are 440 cars that belong to both private customers and Jaguar Land Rover itself. Each of them has an interesting story. And the only way to find out everything about the local inhabitants is to get a job here. Or spend a fortune on a year of daily excursions, each of which will cost 49 pounds (almost four thousand rubles).

For this money, visitors will be shown not only the collection, but also the restoration workshop - a place where real magic happens. There are 54 stations in it, any car that comes for restoration is assigned to the craftsmen who work with the car until the very end, so that every car brought back to life is made with personal responsibility.

If it is impossible to find or restore them, the part is ordered from numerous suppliers: from scratch, you can make optics, glass, interior fittings, frames and upholstery of seats. Of course, at every stage the company tries not to deviate one iota from the original historical production standards, and among the suppliers there are many companies that worked with Jaguar and Land Rover decades ago. For example, the supplier of leather has not changed: it is still transported from Switzerland and made in the same way as in the fifties and sixties.

Jaguar Land Rover Classic spun off from SVO's “dedicated” division in 2016, with an investment of around $ 9 million.In addition to restoring and servicing historic Jaguar and Land Rover models, it produces the most sought-after parts (now there are more than 30,000 items in the vintage parts catalog), and also creates some historic models from scratch in limited editions.

The factory restoration program is called Reborn and implies a thorough restoration of cars to their original condition. Moreover, the company is ready to communicate with far from every patient: at least 80% of the details of the "source" must be in good condition, that is, do not require replacement, but give in to restoration.

The second direction is called Continuation: This is exactly the creation from scratch of historical Jaguar models from archival drawings. As part of this program, the company has already released a series of XKSS models, some of the most famous and revered Jaguars. In 1957, 16 of these cars were made: there were supposed to be 25, but a fire that happened at the plant on February 12, 1957, destroyed nine cars. It was these nine machines that were recreated 60 years later, with exact and principled adherence to the assembly technology of sixty years ago.

And now in the workshop, work is in full swing on the revival of another important model, the elegant Jaguar D-Type. The engine costs about 60,000 euros, the gearbox costs another 30,000. The carburetors say Weber, but this is just a tribute to the historical accuracy. In fact, the British simply bought the rights to the nameplate, and the carburetors for the Jaguar Land Rover Classic are made by a small family workshop. When all these expensive and historically verified components and assemblies come together, they will ask for about 1.75 million euros for the car, and the total circulation will be 25 pieces.

All these numbers form a very successful business model: the restoration queue at the JLR Classic sometimes stretches for a whole year. But this business has a very human face, because they work with history. More precisely, with stories that are always not only about cars, but also about people. Completely different in origin and level of wealth, but in this case united by a common passion for automobiles.

In this context, David himself recalls with pleasure a Jaguar XJ6-based restomod made for Iron Maiden drummer Nico McBrane. McBrane bought this 1984 sedan with his first concert fee as part of the legendary group, but then, due to circumstances, left it in London with a friend for a long time. The car has been growing into the ground for many years. “There were squirrels under the hood, chipmunks in the trunk. In the evenings they met in the middle, in the salon, and fought wall to wall. You can imagine the state of the car,”laughs David.

It took Moore and his team 3,500 hours of work and 4,000 new parts to turn the old XJ6 into a cool, stylish restomod. The car has new bumpers, a luxurious interior, the brakes are controlled by a pedal from a drum set, and the knobs on the front panel are borrowed from a Marshall amplifier.

And a similar story is behind almost every car. Here is a luxurious silver-gray Jaguar Mark V. It is owned by one of the members of the royal family (they do not say who exactly). And a very successful and wealthy dentist agreed to sell his collection of Jaguars and Land Rovers - but on condition that the company buys not only them, but the entire collection. So classic cars of other brands were registered in the storehouse in Coventry.

And once an E-Type from the USA came to the restoration of the Jaguar Land Rover Classic, in the cabin of which, during disassembly, they found a cache for a pistol. Who drove this car? Secret agent? Or maybe a member of a mafia group? This will remain a mystery.

Those who work here also have a lot of interesting stories: restoring cars or looking for new exhibits for the brand's factory collection. One of the center's employees came to England from distant Australia, and at the same time brought with him a first-generation Range Rover, which turned out to be in such perfect and complete condition that they began to use it as a reference in the restoration of client models.

Right above it sits the Range Rover Velar - but it's not the new one with retractable handles.The Velar name was used for pre-production prototypes of the first generation Range Rover, and there is a funny legend about its origin. Someone at Jaguar Land Rover drew attention to two interesting facts: first, in the ancient Greek language there is the word Velar, which translates as "camouflage"; secondly, the word Velar can be assembled from the same letters that make up the name of the Range Rover - you just need to get an L. somewhere.

Rumor has it that in the end, someone from the testing team did just that: L was made from E by simply breaking off the two top sticks, and the word Velar appeared on the hood of the prototype. And decades later, a joke designed to confuse journalists turned into a brand - and we can only guess what they will talk about Velar half a century later.

It used to be much more fun and interesting with paparazzi and photo spies, David recalls. He has many stories of how he escaped the pursuit of annoying journalists, but David tactfully does not go into details. But it shows how strange and ugly it was necessary to dress up test prototypes before in order not to give out their design. It is now enough to cover the body with camouflage with a special print, which successfully hides the outlines. Previously, this was not the case: pieces of foam and good old duct tape were used. In this form, for example, the Jaguar XK8 went on road tests at one time.

Not far from it is a modern classic - the Jaguar C-X75 supercar. It did not become serial, but, for all its futurism, it turned into an ironic monument to the triumph of the old school. They say the Bond film producers fell in love with the car at first sight and immediately wanted it to appear in the next part of the franchise. But with one condition: the advanced hybrid power plant with electric motors and gas turbine generators was replaced with an old five-liter V8 with a compressor. This was done. Never mind that this C-X75 is now in Jaguar Land Rover's storerooms instead of on a dealership window.

Irony is generally the eternal companion of Jaguar Land Rover Classic employees who are looking for valuable historic cars of the brand. For example, the division has long and painfully been trying to assemble all 16 pre-production prototypes of Land Rover Series I, the "grandfather" of the Defender SUV. Experts are searching all over the planet, and not so long ago they finally found one car. A kilometer from my own workshop.

A gentleman from Coventry called and said that some kind of SUV, similar to a Land Rover, has long been growing into the ground in his garden. It turned out to be prototype number seven. It is not known how much Jaguar Land Rover paid that gentleman, but the car itself is certainly priceless for the brand. Of course, time battered him mercilessly, he pretty much rotted, and the front fenders had to be replaced with new ones.

Say, they are not very similar to the new ones? That's all right. And even more: the red Land Rover nameplate is also a remake. It was painted, and then crawled with sandpaper for a long time, bent and scratched to "age" a little.

It may seem strange, but trying to pass off the new as the old is normal in this case. When the restoration reaches a level bordering on the Shakespearean sequence in frenzy, the game begins to be played according to different rules. A good example is one of the first generation Range Rovers.

The owner asked to restore the car to ideal, but so that it looks, sounds and even smells historically correct, and nothing showed signs of restoration in it. For example, the first generation Range Rover had an annoying flaw: the driver's seat was too close to the door, and from their contact over time, the upholstery was damaged. The client was offered to correct this flaw, but he refused.

Another example is the plastic parts of the interior, which were not very high-quality painted and slightly differed in color from each other. The client really wanted it to be preserved after the restoration … The same story - with the floor upholstery: it was essential that in the restored Range Rover the carpet looked worn and was slightly crooked at the joints.

Another Range Rover was in a shabby condition, with many body panels requiring replacement, including the roof panel.Jaguar Land Rover has a huge archive of detailed blueprints for older models, as well as a whole squad of suppliers who are ready to make historical parts and parts. But the roof is an exception: it is a large element for which it is necessary to prepare equipment and accessories, and given the fact that the spare part is, to put it mildly, unpopular, the cost of a remake will be inadequate even by the standards of wealthy Jaguar Land Rover Classic customers. Therefore, the only option in the case of this machine was to find a donor. And they found him. Somewhere in Asia …

And because of this, it feels like the Classic division has become so familiar with the role that it not only makes historically correct cars, but also lives in a historically correct context. While the whole of Europe is screaming for tolerance and equal rights regardless of gender, in the Jaguar Land Rover Classic, only men are trusted to haul the interior of vintage cars. Initially, it was a man's job, because the tools were limited, and physical strength was required to work with leather interiors. This is what they did half a century ago, which means that we must do it now.

Jaguar D-Type aluminum bodies, as elegant as a woman's body, continue to use exclusively mallets and a wooden frame, while experience and craftsmanship are passed from one generation to the next, not in the form of boring printed manuals, but in conversations and during work. … So, for the sake of historically correct rivets on the body panels of the D-Type, Jaguar Land Rover Classic specialists found the person who made these rivets decades ago. He is still alive, he is over 90 years old, and it was he who taught young restorers how to do the job correctly.

Here they appreciate and love manual labor, here it smells of wood, leather and dust - it smells of time, and a centuries-old tradition of transferring experience and knowledge from generation to generation, from father to son has been built into a cult. David Moore is also growing up a little son, and especially for him he wrote a book in which he collected all his experiences and memories. Perhaps it will be published someday, but not in the original: there are too many important company secrets in it that cannot be disclosed. But it can be inherited.
