The American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has found the difference in the consequences of an accident between conventional passenger cars and SUVs with pickup trucks. This was reported by the Autoblog edition.

  • The study examined the statistics of accidents in the period from 1989 to 2016 with the participation of cars of different classes of age from one to four years. It turned out that from 1989 to 1992, the probability of death in a collision of a passenger car with an SUV was 132 percent higher than in a collision with another passenger car. In the period from 2009 to 2012, this figure was already 59 percent, and in 2013–2016 it dropped to 28 percent.
  • The situation with pickups is worse: over the entire observation period, their danger to cars decreased by only one percent - from 159 to 158. And the peak fell in 2005-2008 - 212 percent.
  • The main reason for the greater damage caused by large vehicles is the difference in mass: heavy pickups and SUVs have more inertia and impact force. Also, conventional cars suffer more from the lower body position. In a collision, SUVs and pickups often hit above special zones of programmed body deformation.
