Things like that: the age of Swedish cars lasts longer. Therefore, we have been waiting for a good five years to update the flagship Volvo XC90. And then - a little more. A couple of months after the spring restyling, brand new cars reached us, and at the sunset of the summer season we drove them to the Rybachiy Peninsula, near the Barents Sea. So that, surrounded by water and stones, to see the result of a modest but important renovation.

If this is a new Volvo, where to look?

It is difficult to distract from the beauty of the Barents Sea, but look at the radiator grill - it is new on the XC90, with a reverse slope. Thanks to the picket fence of curved slats, the "grill" now has its own three-dimensionality, freshness and even … sportiness.

In its most daring (outwardly) R-Design trim, the XC90 grille is reminiscent of the Polestar models. Who are Polestar? It is a former sports sub-brand of Volvo, but now it is an almost independent company that builds electric cars. What exactly does the grill remind of him? The fact that it is stylishly cellular, with a dark core.

Anything else in appearance?

Yes. Refreshing the XC90, the Swedes did not change the body cosmetics (the grille is already a noticeable difference), but they added new wheels. If before the buyer had a choice between five options in four dimensions (from 18 to 22 inches), now there are nine options, three of which are in a new 20-inch version for the crossover.

It's the same with the body color. Three new shades have appeared in the catalog: two light and one dark. But the red XC90s are gone.

Wheels, grille, color … Smallish for restyling, is not it?

Volvo-restyling is such a Volvo-restyling. The "second" XC90 appeared five years ago, and the Swedes began to think about a new model in general in 2011. And if you rewind further and remember its predecessor, then the first-generation crossover lived a long, happy 12-year life and, in general, left with dignity (although it is still sold in China as the XC Classic). What are we for? Let it mean that the Swedes are laconic, thorough and unhurried.

It would be very useful to recall the commercial for the restyled S90 sedan of the late 2000s. The slogan was very honest: "We just increased the space between the letters in the word Volvo." Isn't it a confirmation of the rule?

Is that all there is to know about the new XC90?

Of course, not all. Let me open… no, not a door, but a Volvo branded brochure. Please: the refreshed crossover received a completely new interior upholstery. It is made from a composite material with 30% virgin wool and has a pleasant home-like look. Volvo says this material is just as good as textiles and leather. We believe. True, the only problem with woolen upholstery is that it cannot be touched. This option did not reach Russia, and therefore the interiors of our XC90s are recognizably leather, in several shades: from cream to black. And in the top-end configurations with the Luxury Seats Pack, somewhere under the perforated leather of the chairs, cold air blows and miniature pneumatic massage chambers hiss. However, these options were before restyling.

And by the way, about the chairs. All from the same booklet, you can find out that the crossover has received a new configuration with six seats: two more seats can be "raised" behind the separated from each other second-row seats, if necessary. Is such a complete set available in Russia? Not.

Tell me right away - what else will we NOT have?

For example, the so-called mild hybrid with an electric motor-generator and a 48-volt on-board network. In the Volvo alphabet, such versions are marked with the suffix "B". The electric motor in this power plant does not shine with power - only 14 forces (for comparison: a conventional hybrid T8 Twin Engine has an 87-horsepower motor), but it helps during acceleration and stores energy during braking. As a result, mild-hybrid crossovers are 15 percent more fuel efficient, greener and rumored to be smoother on the go.

And since there is nothing new under the hoods of our XC90s, is it worth the reminder of how gasoline and diesel cars drive? If yes, then they ride the same way as before.

And there, and here - the familiar supercharged fours of the Drive-E series on a unified two-liter block. Both here and there - an 8-speed automatic without a separate sport mode, which still noticeably lags behind the transmissions on "gasoline" and is more flexible with a diesel engine. And Volvo still has the same two suspension options: basic spring and advanced air, whose maximum 267 millimeters of clearance (Off Road mode) are so useful in the edge of water and stones.

By the standards of the wild nature of Rybachy our Volvo is like steel aliens from the world of abundance. Here they are used to seeing UAZ or Zhiguli: the first will pass, the second is not a pity to leave.

And the XC90, despite the four-wheel drive with a rear "Haldex" - a pity. There is no lowering row, and a full-fledged blocking is replaced by an electronic imitation. Big Volvo likes the asphalt of the Kola highway, which leads to Murmansk. But I don't want to throw myself on stones or into a half-meter ford. Too quiet and peaceful in this leather salon house.

Is the house still smart?

Yes, and after restyling, he became smarter chu-duck. As before, all digital is tied to the Sensus interface with a large nine-inch touchscreen, the instrument panel replaces the 12.3-inch display, and the driving modes are controlled by a beautiful drum on the central tunnel. Other physical buttons are scattered throughout the cabin and are not conspicuous. Pre-styling car owners will spend a lot of time trying to understand what has changed here. And those who have Android smartphones in their pockets will be the first to notice that the Volvo interface has become friends with their devices via Android Auto. The system did not offer this before.

And on the move and on good asphalt, a second pleasant surprise will be revealed: the XC90 active safety complex has learned to monitor the departure from the lane and, at speeds up to 140 km / h, independently steer if necessary. The crossover took over this chip from the younger XC60.

A modest restyle is a modest price increase. So?

Yes. Additional 35-100 thousand rubles (depending on the version) in the world of modern Volvo is not such a lot of money. The base 249-horsepower petrol version of the T5 Momentum is now estimated at 3,955,000 rubles, and for the same Momentum, but with a 235-horsepower diesel engine, you need to pay 4,379,000 rubles. And if you look at the price list from the other end, you can find the amount of 6,191,000 rubles - this is how much Volvo asks for the top 407-horsepower hybrid version of the T8 in the R-Design package. In the absence of "soft hybrids", this is the version we will continue to consider the most advanced.
