Working on a new SUV - after all, 13 years have passed since the appearance of the old one - the Japanese took the face from the LJ10 model from the 70s, the hood and lights from the Samurai of the 80s, the nose slots from the outgoing car and got a conditionally collective image of the ideal Dzhimnik. A cube body, an almost vertical windshield, completely vertical sides, purely nominal overhangs, a canonical spare wheel on the third door, square arches - and voila.
"Gee-Class!" the crowd chants. And in this comparison, on the whole, there is nothing reprehensible.
Similar - and great. Unlike the original experiments with the appearance of the SX4 or foreign Baleno, Alto or Ciaz (google if necessary), Dzhimnik really came out special.
And how could it be otherwise with such and such a concept? It's almost the third decade of the 21st century, and right off the bat, a new Japanese SUV is reborn with a ladder frame, continuous bridges and a classic "part time" drive with a rigidly connected front end. What is not a counterweight for a decently updated "Gelendvagen" or almost completely changed the philosophy of Land Rover Defender?
Sit down, or rather lie down next to this Jimny: here are two pot-bellied differentials on the axles, here is the suspension on the thick legs of the trailing arms, here is the steering damper with an antique "screw" instead of a modern rack. As if from the book "Device of a car" in 1985, which was gathering dust on the shelf of a training and production plant. Even the UAZ looks more modern! Whoever was looking for toughness - all of it is here: concentrated, rough, thickly smeared on every element of the chassis. All of this will only fit a body similar to the G-Class, Defender and Land Cruiser 70 at once.
But do not think that we find fault with the Japanese kid, in every possible way ridiculing the technological backwardness. Not at all, because such cars are rare! Before us is the same Jimny that we have known for decades. And that they were so afraid to lose.
Indeed, there was a risk. Imagine that the name Jimny in the spirit of the times passed to a crossover with a monocoque body, only superficially similar to its ancestor. Quite a typical story, huh? As one movie hero said, "Imagine everyone crying." Instead, Suzuki took the same base and put a completely new body on it, without changing anything in the DNA structure.
It became cooler than it was. And better than it could have been
At the same time, the body itself is an attempt to jump not into the future, but back into the past of the brand. And it turned out that in comparison with the previous rounded-pretty Jimny, the new one looks like a guest from the seventies.
The front optics became round, the hexagonal shape of the face refers to the "Japanese" Jeep " Suzuki LJ10 of 1970, and the lights moved to the rear bumper, which widened the doorway: according to this indicator, the new Jimny outperforms the old one by almost four centimeters.
In the steel body, as Suzuki jokes, there is more steel. Reinforced metal elements have appeared at the lower edge of the windshield and at the front of the body. And the frame underneath it received more cross-members, larger pillows and … additional protection from corrosion and gravel, which for Jimny connoisseurs is an almost tangible, weighty bonus.
If you are one of these connoisseurs, then you know that old cars rusted. There was a sin. But now, it seems like, otherwise: the body shells of the new Dzhimniki did not regret galvanizing, and the bottom and joints were processed with great diligence. Equally diligently, the SUV is insulated from the inside: there are a lot more sound-absorbing mats! This means that the cabin will be quieter. At least in theory.
Salon! Yes, by the fourth generation, Jimny's inner world has really become interesting. The front panel is completely redrawn. It is three-dimensional, stylish, albeit still tough to the touch.The main thing is that concepts such as ergonomics and design have appeared here! "Climate control" is no longer an ironic exaltation of an old block that changed the temperature: instead of a slider and oven handles, there are nice twist washers with a screen.
The front seats are seven centimeters wider, and the plastic tides, on which the knees always beat, have disappeared from the door cards. And now appreciate the dashboard divided into two wells, a row of flags-buttons under the same climate block, a thick passenger handrail, and most importantly - an absolutely impossible trifle: decorative bolts at the corners of the dashboard. These soft-touch elements are cute. It seems that the panel was assembled using small hexagons: neatly, without folding a single head and therefore not covering them with plugs.
Whoa, whoa, Suzuki! Isn't it a bit too much style and mannerism for a car that, as the British joke, “you can forget in the field and go for a new one”?
However, is there even such a field where Jimny can be left? After all, he is like a dog: he will return home from any mud. Grimy but happy
From wheel to wheel - some two meters. To become insurmountable, off-road you need to dodge abruptly. Where a big and serious Wrangler squints his eyes, pondering the optimal route, Dzhimnik will dive and emerge, kicking his tail. Or even jump - he doesn't care.
With a ton with a small curb weight from the transverse ditches, it flies out like an under-barrel machine gun, crashing to the ground. Honestly, I thought we were going to kill ourselves. But to kill or at least cripple this car is a task with an asterisk.
The lowering row of the transmission is no longer included here. It is cut with a separate lever on the tunnel. They say that the fans who played enough with the buttons on the panel and wanted something weighty asked to return the real "stick". How strange people are.
As a result, your efforts should be decent, and your actions should be firm: you stopped, went into neutral, drowned, and then pulled down the transfer case selector, back to Drive - and hello, dirt!
A short wheelbase, large approach and exit angles (37 and 49 degrees), a 28-degree ramp, an invulnerable frame ridge and intelligent electronic imitation of locks work wonders. Jimny kneads mud and scrapes on the sand so confidently and easily that you want to return to the asphalt in much the same way as you home in your distant childhood. Well, another half hour! However, fans are familiar with this from the old car. From fresh sensations - the motor.
The old "four" in 1.3 liters was replaced by a new one and a half liter aspirated 102 hp. It is 17 horses more powerful, 15 percent lighter, noticeably more economical and slightly smoother thanks to the new flywheel. At the same four thousand revolutions, all 130 Newton meters are available (there were 110), and there are almost always enough off-road ones. And only upon returning to the track, when, having shaken off, Jimny becomes an ordinary car, you notice that reaching the limit of dynamic capabilities is as easy as driving the driver's hand to the rear window.
At the road pace Jimny is not so cool. It turns sour. The stylish forward-action gear lever hides the old Aisin automatic, and on the highway, its four gears are few. Only the "mechanics" have more (one step), which is offered as an alternative.
Overtaking while cruising did not become an easier task for the car. And why would? This is still a noisy and hectic process, often associated with maximum revs, which leaves all the charm of improved sound insulation.
And if you do not overtake at all and roll quietly in an aerodynamic "bag", you can find another problem in the form of chips on the front: the more vertical front pillars have turned the glass into an easy target for stones, and if you have a truck in front of you, remember: the new windshield on Jimny costs about 17 thousand rubles.
The sailing body also shies away from the oncoming trucks. As a result, there is general fussiness and discomfort, which larger cars are completely devoid of. It turns out that it is better to drive Jimny out of the mud right away somewhere in the center of the metropolis. Where modest dimensions, bright colors and visual cosplay will work at full force on "Gelik".
There is an event in the city of Jimny. The body, uncomplicated in shape, becomes a mobile art object.Everyone pokes their fingers into this Suzuki, from children to Land Cruiser owners who have seen everything in this life. And on the go, you get the feeling that you are rolling on a bright G 500 4x4² - the same rolls, the same roughness, the same attention. At the same time, unlike typical SUVs, Dzhimnik is fantastically nimble: he even has a lot of standard lane widths, and he jumps between the rows without obstacles. How not to remember that in Japan Jimny has an even narrower version that fits into the dimensions of a kei car!
Steering wheel. On straight lines, it may seem that the steering wheel turns the wheels too weakly - you have to steer in large amplitudes. But it is worth spending time, making a few turns (and from lock to lock - more than four!), And you will find that Dzhimnik is able to turn around on a penny. IPad-sized side mirrors show everything - and this is in addition to exemplary visibility, without a hint of dead spots. And since they are not there - why parktronic?
At the same time, Suzuki did not deprive the baby of other equipment. Thanks to Vitara's top 7-inch media suite, Jimny has Bluetooth and Apple / Android support. And also - a light sensor, diode optics with headlight washers, cruise control and a downhill assist system. Few? Come on, this is already good.
And what's bad: the standard navigation is frankly poor in terms of the picture and functionality, and the sound … well, it's good that there is music in principle.
So is the trunk. The nominal volume of the hold is some 85 liters. To tamp something larger than a duffel bag into the Jimny, you need to fold one of the rear seats or raise the backrest. Thus, you will have to go to any grocery shopping (not to mention clothing) together. Want to take someone else? Place the bags on your lap. The back, as before, can accommodate two adults: there are belts for them and some legroom. But you can go to such a company for a picnic only by sending things in a separate car. Nominally, a four-seater Dzhimnik is still the same really two-seater thing.
And the thing is worth the money. Yes, abroad Suzuki are used to talking about this as a cheap transport, but one and a half million Russian rubles is the level of well-packed, gender-neutral crossovers. Which are "for everyone."
And here, fans and consumers will go their own way. The paths of those who count money and value comfort are well known: they are on Google maps and cut off at dealerships Hyundai, Renault and Nissan. But what about those who decided not to notice the conventional Creta, Kaptur, Arkan and Qashqai, ignore the larger and cheaper frame UAZ Patriot and, following the impulses of their hearts, follow the new Jimny? Waiting for them … turn. The demand for new Jimny is so great that getting yourself a pocket SUV is not easy.
Still, these fans are strange people. Meet in the stream - smile: this person lives with his heart. And it is larger than the machine itself.
