But the engine has not changed: a 106-horsepower 16-valve accelerates the Grant to a hundred in 10.5 seconds on the mechanics and in 12 seconds on the AMT robot (in the previous version, the Drive Active was offered only on the “handle”). Slow? Perhaps.
VestSport at one time listened to a lot of criticism for sluggish dynamics, so VAZ employees are cautious with terms and say that Drive Active is a story not so much about sports as about gambling interesting management and a slightly brighter, youthful image. And in order to provide this excitement and image, it took only 28 parts, which formed the four main differences between the Drive Active version and the usual Granta. Here they are.
The LadSport division, which appeared in 2011, was a subsidiary of AvtoVAZ, which, over eight years of its life, managed to release sports versions of the Kalin and Granta models, the even more charged KalinNFR, the GrantDrive Active of the previous generation and the VestSport sedan. At LadSport's facilities, the assembly of cars is also established: ready-made bodies and all components come here, after which the car is assembled together, hanging new bumpers and screwing on the modified suspension.
So: the springs in the suspension remained the same, but the working cylinders of the shock absorbers, the rods and the housing of the struts became a little thicker. Compared to the usual "Grant", the suspension is shorter, and the ground clearance has decreased by 18 millimeters and is 162 mm.
The new settings really make the "Grant" drive more interesting. The title of a full-fledged "hot" sedan of the Drive Active version is very far away, but in the nuances of excitement it has increased: rolls in corners have decreased, reactions have become sharper, and behavior in high-speed arcs, on the contrary, is more stable.
More importantly, LadSport did not get carried away and managed to maintain the excellent energy intensity of the chassis: as before, Grant is not afraid of bumps, easily copes with large pits and perfectly digests combos of small irregularities and potholes. A tougher setting reminds of itself only when passing tram lines.
They also did not forget about the resource: "Grant" was driven on a new suspension at the training ground on different types of surfaces in such aggressive conditions, under which one kilometer of run literally takes three. During these tests, the Drive Active traveled 36,000 kilometers, which is equivalent to approximately 118,000 kilometers under normal conditions. As you might guess, everything ended well.
However, there is a caveat: they did not change the brake and steering settings for the new suspension. Therefore, there are questions for them. With deceleration efficiency, everything is in order, and with aggressive braking, the Drive Active seems more stable compared to the usual "Grants". But the pedal itself is not set up very informatively: almost in half the stroke, nothing happens at all, and then, as if coming to their senses, the brakes are immediately grasped at full speed. The usual "Grants" are also distinguished by a strange calibration of the pedals, and this feature is floating and is not found on all cars. Assembly nuances?
As for the steering, it just wants more solid and natural reaction force to match the lively behavior of the chassis. The electric amplifier left without modifications works according to the budget program itself: it simply pours lightness on the steering wheel, followed by emptiness in the reactions and uncertainty in the near-zero zone.
There are no complaints about the mechanical box: if we leave out of the brackets its branded incurable buzz, it is quite satisfactory with moderately short shifts and a distinct effort, and the clutch grabs softly and predictably. With the AMT robot, the impression is blurred: it still goes through the gears a little out of place and rudely, and the sport mode does not bring anything except kicks when switching and unnecessary freezes of the motor in the red zone.And this only spoils the essence of the Drive Active version, so it seems that it does not need a robot.
Stylistically, the new details are very similar to the "armor" of the senior sedan VestSport, and the exhaust pipe is generally from this very "Vesta Sport". The bumpers are made of ABS plastic, have passed tough temperature tests and look good on the Grant.
Moreover, the body kit is also functional. LadSport assures that the drag coefficient has decreased, and the downforce at high speeds has increased, so that the Drive Active should behave more stable than the usual Grants on the track. True, numbers are not given, and it is too difficult to feel the increased stability on a short trip.
The image is complemented by 15-inch wheels, the design of which is again similar to the design of Vestovskaya footwear. But there is a suspicion that the owners of such Grants will have a modest 15th diameter giving way to even larger wheels.
Diligently bypassing associations with sports, in the GrantSport Active cabin, the VAZ employees nevertheless snapped: the Sport inscription flaunts on the tidy, the instrument edging is painted in aggressive red, the inserts on the front seats are made in the same color, the stitching on the steering wheel and gearbox cover, and the lacquered the panels on the front panel are decorated with a print that vaguely resembles carbon.
But the decoration is not the main thing here. More importantly, the Drive Active has new front seats. Anatomically, they are very similar to those that were installed on the previous GrantSport: they have stiffer padding, more pronounced lateral support for the backrest and seat cushion. But the fit cannot be called ideal, and the fault is again the dissonance with the character of the car.
The problem is that the GrantDrive Active is assembled on the basis of a simple Comfort package, which is not particularly pleased with the equipment. It has no foglights, the rear power windows are mechanical, and the driver's seat has no height adjustment! This is what brings the driver's "Grant": from the outside, the car looks quite sporty and tunes in a certain way, but as soon as you get behind the wheel, all ambitions break down on a seating position that is too high for such a form factor. And taking into account the fact that the steering wheel adjustment for the departure of the "Grant" did not even dream of, the back also cannot be thrown back too much. As a result, you sit behind the wheel as if on a chair - high and upright. And the pillow of the chair I would like to be more authentic: the hips hang in the air.
On the plus side is the cool steering wheel trim. The steering wheel turned out to be a grip, textured, pleasant to the touch. There is, of course, a suspicion that this finish is inferior to conventional "plastic" steering wheels in terms of durability.
Audience and price
According to the forecasts of marketers, the average Drive Active buyer will be about ten years younger than those who choose the regular LadGranta. Moreover, these are people who are clearly ready to sacrifice comfort for the sake of drive.
Drive Active on the mechanics costs 630,000 rubles, for the AMT robot you will have to pay another 25,000 rubles. An ordinary Grant with the same engine with similar equipment costs almost 90,000 rubles cheaper, and for 635,000 rubles you can buy a Grant in the maximum configuration Luxe with an automatic transmission, and there will already be a useful driver's seat lift and power windows on all doors. and an air conditioner instead of a conventional air conditioner.
On the other hand, in the B-segment, the “active” LadGrant really has no direct competitors. She looks bright, is more interesting to manage than most of her classmates for a reasonable price, so if you cannot call her a representative of the world of hot hatches and sports sedans, then an entrance ticket to this world is quite.
