Video: Everything You & Nbsp; Need To Know About The & Nbsp; New Land Rover Defender

His time has come! Land Rover showed the world a fundamentally new Defender: the replacement of the frame long-liver, which lasted 70 years on the assembly line, turned out to be outstanding without jokes. And, it seems, everyone is waiting for a violent reaction from fans of the old "Defender". Why? Here's how the new SUV differs from everything we knew about the Defender.
All from the Frankfurt Salon - by tag Frankfurt-2019 or in our Telegram channel
Fact 1. It is no longer framed. But it was expected
The new Defender can hardly be called a direct heir to the original Def. First of all, constructively. Instead of an archaic and indestructible ladder frame, the novelty has a lightweight aluminum monocoque D7x, a fresh iteration of which the British call "the most durable ever created" by them. The change of ideologies is obvious.

Torsional rigidity of the body has skyrocketed to 29,000 Nm / degree, which is three times higher than any SUV with a frame body. Or 7000 Nm / degree stiffer than the older Land Rover Discovery with a similar architecture. Its roof withstands 300 kilograms on the trunk in statics and almost 170 - in dynamics. And if, for example, you pull the new product by the towing hooks, the structure will withstand 6.5 tons of jerk load.
Fully independent suspensions are docked to the body - double wishbone at the front and multi-link Integral Link at the rear!

Fact 2. Defender is beautiful and now it's a pity to "kill"
The silhouette of the novelty has ceased to be a secret a few months ago, but exactly how the Defender turned out became clear only now. In a nutshell: the glamor has increased, and the rudeness and roughness have been reduced to small designer inclusions.
Design Director Jerry McGovern's words reinforce the brand's message: “This is the Defender of a new era. The image was inspired by the past, but not dictated by it. Expressive silhouette and optimal proportions; this car is incredibly attractive."

Do you remember the word "attractive" in the context of the looks of the old "Def"? Not! But the novelty is a real design car. Thanks for the two body options: the "short" 90th (it will appear later) and the "long" 110th, for the kindly preserved Alpine Light windows on the roof, for short overhangs, sheer struts and a vertical tailgate, for the squares of the wheel arches and hinged spare tire on the tailgate. And if such beautiful plastic and 22-inch (in the top) wheels are a pity, then you can always choose 18-inch stamped wheels with off-road tires and a special polyurethane coating Satin Protective Film, which protects the body from scratches. If applied, the body becomes brutal matte. If you remove it, there will be no traces. Somewhere now, detailing centers are crying.

Fact 3. The cabin is full of surprises
Depending on the version, the new Defender can carry five, six or seven people. Moreover, the number "6" is very interesting. The fact is that the "extra" passenger can be seated on the folding seat of the front (!) Row, between the driver and the passenger - such a landing section replaces the traditional armrest. She has her own seat belt, and when folded it turns into … an armrest with cup holders.
The volume of the trunk is 1075 liters or 2380 if you fold the second row.

Those who are not ready to rub their elbows, the novelty will meet the usual separate front seats, truly modern architecture and cool design with a bunch of quotes from other Land Rovers.
Inside, there are plenty of design tricks from the past and present. Finishing materials (in addition to leather and wood) include magnesium (part of the front panel is made of it, which is also part of the body's structural structure - and it has several finishes), a rubberized trunk cover and wear-resistant fiber on the seats. And digitalization is absolutely outrageous for Defender! This is the first model with a "brisk" (hurray!) Pivi Pro multimedia system with a 10-inch screen, whose response, simplicity and logic should pleasantly surprise. The new "Def" is always in touch with the servers, updated over the air (with the help of a wildly protected LTE channel), it can have a digital tidy, a projection display and 360-degree cameras.

Fact 4.Still, the Defender is still Land Rover's coolest SUV
If you don't order lacquered bumpers, the new Defender can be nicely mixed with dirt. The body architecture with independent suspensions and air springs gave 291 millimeters of ground clearance (226 mm - on a conventional spring suspension) and the best-in-class geometry. For the "long" Defender 110, the angles of entry, exit and ramp are 38, 40 and 28 degrees, respectively. That's more than the Discovery's, although the Disco's wheelbase is 99mm shorter. A nice bonus is the flat bottom, protected from below by a piece of aluminum.
There is a permanent four-wheel drive and a razdatka with a lowering and two differential locks - central and rear. According to Land Rover engineers, the chassis has passed 62,000 tests, whose requirements exceeded those imposed on crossovers.

And the novelty is also called "the most reliable and passable Land Rover ever created." A couple of facts are cited as proof: the Defa wheels are capable of withstanding up to 7 tons of load, the articulation of the suspensions is 500 millimeters, and the steepness of the side slope, which can be assaulted, reaches 45 degrees!

Fact 5. The Defender is strong and smart
The endurance of the novelty is easier to describe in one phrase: Defender is able to tow up to 3720 kg and force a 900 mm ford. Time to look under the hood, isn't it?
From launch, the Defender will be available with two Ingenium diesel fours with 200 and 240 hp. The younger version of the D200 accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 10.3 seconds, and the older D240 is slightly faster: 9.1 seconds.

Gasoline units are a 300-horsepower "turbo four" (0-100 km / h - in 8.1 s) and a six-cylinder in-line engine as part of a "soft" hybrid 400-horsepower tandem P400 (0-100 km / h - in 6, 1 s) with electric blower, starter-generator and separate battery for energy recovery.
All motors are paired with the familiar ZF 8-speed automatic, which has been modified and strengthened specifically for the Defender, as well as with a two-stage "transfer case".

In this case, the brakes here are "by wire", and the adaptive air suspension (optional!) Monitors the position of the body up to 500 times per second, allowing it to be raised by 145 mm if necessary. The Terrain Response off-road complex has become more flexible and independent, and the differentials and traction control can be controlled through the display.
Fact 6. Defender can be very cool modified
While we are talking about factory styling. In addition to the Standard, S, SE, HSE and X trim levels, the customer has four equipment packages at his disposal. The Urban and Explorer kits will be the first to appear. And if the first is a purely urban version, with bumper pads, footpegs and top-end 22-inch wheels, the Explorer prepares the Defender for an exit from the asphalt. There is a snorkel, an expedition roof rack with a ladder and an additional rack on board, mud flaps, bumper protectors, wheel arch extensions and even a portable mini-sink.

The other two packages, Country and Adventure, will arrive by mid-2020 and include options such as side saddlebags, a tire compressor and a boot bulkhead. All this is for travel of varying degrees of autonomy.
In fact, the new Defender can be almost anything - from a workhorse with a spring suspension and a simple body / wheels to a luxurious city dweller with lacquered bumpers and leather in the cabin - it all depends on the needs of the future client.

Fact 7. Defender can be bought already …
… In the first half of next year! First, there will be long versions with an index of 110, and later - and short ones, 90s. The cost of new items in the UK will be about 45,000 pounds (3.6 million rubles) for the basic version, and the top ones will approach the mark of 80,000 pounds (6.5 million rubles). However - for understanding: "Def" is positioned one step below Discovery, so you can estimate the real price yourself.
Should we expect Defender in Russia? Of course yes! True, you will have to endure a little: the Russian office promises to bring new SUVs in the second half of the year.
