In August, Sotheby’s auction house will auction the only surviving racing Porsche Type 64 in Monterey - the oldest surviving car of the brand.

The aircraft-grade aluminum body with aerodynamic wheel covers hides the engine, transmission and suspension from KdF-Wagen, the classic Volkswagen Beetle. The power of the air-cooled boxer "four" has been increased from 24 to 32 horsepower.
- Car developed in 1939 to compete in the 1,500-kilometer race from Berlin to Rome, which was supposed to be an advertisement for the high-speed German autobahns. But the plans were thwarted by the Second World War, before the start of which only one of the three copies of the Porsche Type 64 was built.
- Later, Ferdinand Porsche completed two more Type 64s: the assembly of the first was completed in December 1939, the second in June 1940. For the last car, the chassis of the first instance was used, which had previously been badly damaged in an accident.
- The "third" Type 64 became the personal car of the Porsche family and, unlike the others, survived the war. In 1946, when the car was registered in Austria, Ferdinand first gave the name to the new brand, signing the car with his last name. Two years later, the first production model of Porsche appeared - the legendary 356 coupe.
- In 1949, the car was bought by Austrian racer Otto Mate and played in it in various competitions. In 1979, the car went to another Austrian - Porsche car expert Tom Grubber. The current owner of the model is the fourth in a row.
