The Most Popular Motorcycles In Russia: Which Models Are Most Often Searched For

In many regions of Russia, cold weather sets in and motorcycle lovers have already closed the motorcycle season, which, due to the pandemic, turned out to be a little shorter than usual. However, interest in buying bikes has been strong this year. Analysts of Avto.ru studied the database of classified ads for the sale of motorcycles for January-September 2020 and found out which motorcycles were of the greatest interest to users of the resource.

Among the motorcycles of Russian and Soviet production or from the countries of the former Eastern Bloc, the unconditional bestseller is the legendary motorcycle with a sidecar Ural IMZ-8.103. The cheapest of them are sold on Avto.ru for less than 10,000 rubles. But restored copies and "time capsules" with a mileage of 5–10 kilometers are found on the classified page for the price of a new LadGranta! The second and third places in popularity were taken by the models with which, probably, most motorcycle enthusiasts of the past began - Izh Planet and Jupiter.

Three leaders turned out to be much more popular than the rest of the rating participants. For example, offers for the sale of the Java 638 model, which holds the fourth line of the rating, were looked at a quarter less often than Izh Jupiter, and 40% less often than the Ural. In total, the top 3 models accounted for almost 3% of all motorcycle ad views in 9 months.

Among the motorcycles of foreign brands, Honda is confidently leading: in the top ten there are 7 models of this brand, which account for 7.6% of the demand. The bestseller for the brand and the market as a whole is the HondCB 400: the most popular entry-level model. Ads for the sale of CB 400 were viewed 14% more often than those of the closest competitor. And the interest of users of the classified, for example, to the cube YamahYZF-R1 was lower by a quarter.

In total, ads for the sale of the 10 most popular Soviet motorcycles on Avto.ru gained 5% of the total number of views of all ads with motorcycles this year. Top 10 foreign motorcycles are more popular: they accounted for more than 11% of demand.

In 2020, the peak in demand for motorcycles shifted from May to June - the number of calls increased by 20.5% compared to last year's result and by 19% compared to May. However, this is 12.5% less than in May 2019 - then the maximum number of calls was recorded. In many ways, the "shift" happened because in April and May 2020, the country had restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.

At the same time, in March, as in 2019, there was still interest in motorcycles: the number of views in relation to February increased by a quarter - bike lovers were preparing for the season. But relative to March 2019, traffic still dropped by 22%.

In total, from January to September, they were interested in motorcycles 18% less often than in the same period in 2019.
