According to the results of sales in September, electrified cars turned out to be more popular than diesel cars in Europe. According to the analytical agency JATO Dynamics, hybrids of all types and electric cars occupied 25% of the market, while diesels accounted for 24.8%. And this is the first time in history when cars with an alternative drive have surpassed one of the types of internal combustion engines in popularity.

  • Analysts point out that 10 years ago, the share of diesel cars on the market was 50%, while sales of electric cars did not exceed 1%. However, now the situation has changed dramatically: the demand for vehicles with internal combustion engines is falling, and the sales of electric vehicles compared to September 2019 increased by 139%.
  • For the first time, the number of registrations of electric cars exceeded 300 thousand units and amounted to 327 800 copies. As for hybrids of different types, their sales increased by 124% compared to 2019.
  • TeslModel 3 became the most popular electric car among Europeans in September, Renault Zoe took the second place, and one of the freshest proposals in the segment, VW ID.3, settled immediately on the third position. At the same time, according to JATO, demand for Tesl fell slightly, while Volkswagen and Renault increased sales by 352 and 211%, respectively.

  • The European hybrid market is currently dominated by Toyota, but growth in this segment has also been driven by the popularity of electrified models from other manufacturers, including Ford, Fiat, BMW and Suzuki. For example, in the total sales of the Ford Pum crossover, the share of moderate-hybrid modification is 69%.
  • In Russia, interest in diesel vehicles is also declining. In September, the demand for them decreased by 10.8% compared to the results of a year ago, and the market share was 7.3% - 1.5% less than in September 2019. The most popular diesel-powered model was the Renault Duster.
